Maternity Homes

Maternity homes were very popular in the 60s and 70s but have experienced a decline. Many women who needed maternity homes are now more apt to choose apartment living.  Because of Roe versus Wade, maternity homes in the mid 70s experienced a decline in popularity due to more women choosing abortion.  While they may not be as popular as they once were, maternity homes are still a good option for many women facing an unplanned pregnancy, but as with everything, there are positive and negative sides.

Advantages:
  • Able to cohabitate with women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy.
  • Shelter and meals are available although each mother is expected to pull their own weight regarding chores.
  • Onsite counseling is available to help with your unplanned pregnancy as well as any other challenges you need help facing.
  • Post birth planning is commonplace so you are able to plan for your future.
  • Provide resources to make sure you are able to visit your doctor.
  • Better diet and eating schedule allows you to have an environment which helps you and your baby stay healthy.
  • Cost of maternity home ranges from free to inexpensive.
  • Lowers temptations by not allowing drinking, smoking, and drug use.
  • Protects you from abusive spouses or partners.

Disadvantages:
  • You are cohabitating with other women and this can be challenging.
  • You usually are not able to bring children with you.
  • Don’t have as many liberties and freedoms compared to living on your own.
