Shortness of Breath
Because all of your organs and tissues are getting pushed around and relocated inside of you to make room for the baby, you will often find that it isn’t as easy to breathe as it was before you were pregnant. Lying on your back can make you feel like there is an elephant standing on top of you.
Practice slow, deep breathing -- the kind that happens when you are sleeping, deeply. You can accomplish this by lying on your back and breathing deeply and watching which part of your torso rises and falls. If you see your chest moving, attempt to deepen your breath. When you see your stomach rising and falling, take note, because this is the type of breath you are aiming for.
Ways to Prevent or Alleviate Shortness of Breath Due to Pregnancy
- Practice the type of slow, deep breathing described above.
- Lie propped up to remove some of the pressure and weight from your body.
- Bring your arms up over your head to lengthen the torso and allow to breath easier.
- Slow down! Now is not the time to push yourself.
Of course, if breathing becomes very difficult or labored, it is a good idea to talk to your physician as soon as possible.
