American Adoptions is committed to giving you the best possible selection of adoptive families.
All adoptive families on our website are “active,” which means they have already completed their background checks and adoption home studies, and they are legally ready to begin the adoption process.
You may browse our adoptive families knowing that all precautions have been taken to ensure that each of our adoptive couples are ready and excited to grow their families through adoption.
Our screening processes include the following:
The adoption home study is a glimpse into the adoptive family’s past and present and helps you be assured of your child’s future. During the home study process, we collect criminal and child abuse background checks, reference letters and medical, financial and citizenship documents. These documents are reviewed by American Adoptions, as well as by attorneys, judges and government officials.
The second portion of the adoption home study is the home inspection. A social worker visits the adoptive family’s home to ensure that it is safe for a baby. The social worker will look for items such as child-proof electrical outlet covers, home emergency plans and fire extinguishers on each floor.
The home inspection also includes an interview between the social worker and each individual living in the home. These interviews ensure that the parents are emotionally and physically stable and are ready to become parents through adoption.
The Adoption Planning Questionnaire (APQ) is our second screening process as we work with families to determine the type of adoption situations they are open to, and to collect all sorts of information to help you find the perfect family.
For example, if you are seeking an adoptive couple who lives in a suburb, goes to church, has a stay-at-home mom, and who want to share contact with you before and after the adoption, we can match you with couples who fit that description.
Finally, you will perform your own screening process by personally reviewing adoptive family profiles sent by your Adoption Specialist. You will always have the final say in determining who will be the family to raise your child.
