How We Met

Enjoying Zanzibar Island in East Africa

Our story of coming together is a bit unusual, and began on the other side of the world in 2006. We had both separately joined the Peace Corps, an international program run by the US government. Despite having gone to the same university at the same time, we had never met and did not know the other existed. Once we had joined the Peace Corps, a distant mutual friend of ours connected the dots of our similarities and put us in contact with each other.

Even though we worked on opposite sides of the continent of Africa, we exchanged messages through Facebook due to our connection and shared experiences. However, we would not meet in person until several years later at a Peace Corps event in the US. Even then, we did not start to communicate regularly until several years again after that when we ended up living in the same area. Once we began spending time together, we realized how much our values, interests, and goals aligned, and our relationship grew close very quickly. Our relationship was founded on our backgrounds of service to others, and we draw great enjoyment from traveling throughout the world to learn about new people and places. We also live in a very culturally diverse city that has a lot of international festivals, holidays, and events that we are able to attend! One of our life goals is to visit a new country every year!

What it Means to Become Parents

Snuggling with Nephews

Children bring such innocence and joy into the world, and are so much fun to be around. We both thoroughly enjoy the perspective that children bring to a situation, and are so excited about the possibility of having our own child in our home to experience these things every day. Heath is so good at playing games with children. He really looks forward to finding common interests with his own child that they can do together. Cory, being a teacher, loves being able to share with kids things that he has learned that can make their lives better, and looks forward to building that relationship of trust and compassion as a parent like he does with his students.

We both feel very fortunate to have grown up with parents who loved and cared for us, and taught us the importance of compassion and giving. As we've both entered adulthood and been able to live and experience many amazing things around the world, we have a strong desire to use the wisdom we've learned from others and pass it along to our future children. Together, we love to travel, and are excited about the opportunity to see different parts of our country and our world together as parents with our future child.

Our Family Traditions

Helping Family Decorate for Christmas

We particularly enjoy holiday traditions that our families have done since childhood, and are excited about the thought of doing that with a future child. Cory's favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, and he loves spending the day before, the day of, and the day after cooking and spending time with family. As he grew up in a military family that was rarely close to extended family, his parents always made sure that Thanksgiving was special for him and his brothers no matter where in the world they were. The food that his family makes together is always very delicious, but it's the time spent together doing something memorable which is really special. Heath's favorite holiday tradition is New Year's Day meal. Ever since he was a small child, his mother has made a traditional New Year's Day dinner with traditional foods every year, and jokingly believes that this meal of black-eyed peas, cabbage, and pork will bring good luck for the year! Heath's whole family gathers around his parents' dinner table at the start of each year to continue this tradition, and it's fun to watch our nephews learning about and enjoying this tradition. In addition, we both love decorating for Christmas. A new tradition we have started is to collect a Christmas ornament from every new state or country we visit, which provides a wonderful trip down memory lane each year we decorate our Christmas tree.

Our Extended Families

With Heath's Twin Brother and Nephew

We are both fortunate to have grown up in close-knit families that had a lot of love, laughter, and fun. Now that we are grown, we both remain close to our families, and thoroughly enjoy spending time with our parents, our siblings, and their children. Heath is an identical twin, and is very close to his twin brother and his brother's kids. In fact, their relationship is so close that the kids call Heath "Uncle Daddy", in part because of his resemblance to their dad, but also in part due to their close relationship with him. One of their favorite activities to do together is venturing out early on Saturday mornings in the summer to yard sales in the area and then come back and spend the afternoon with the kids in their pool. The kids also love playing card games and baking cookies and cupcakes with us.

With Cory's Brother

Cory's parents and younger brother live fairly close, too, and gatherings with them are always centered around food and lots of conversation. We like to try our hand at cooking new foods and testing them out. With that said, holidays are centered around traditional meals, and we always look forward to those. Cory's older brother and his kids live out of state, so gatherings with them are always treasured. The kids loving climbing trees and playing outdoor games with us. Our families are very excited about our plan to adopt, and cannot wait to meet our future child.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

Our home sits on a quiet street in a suburban neighborhood in a medium-sized city in Kentucky. Many children of different races play tag or basketball together in each other's yards, and there is rarely a time in the summer when there is not the sound of children nearby. Our house has 3 bedrooms, and we spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Our favorite place is our backyard, especially in the summer. We have several trees, as well as vegetable and flower gardens that we enjoy working in. We also have a fire pit--perfect for making s'mores!

Our community is very family-oriented and has a lot of fun events throughout the year. Our favorite (and largest) is the annual International Festival, which celebrates the many nationalities present in our community. Children love this event for its food, dancing, face painting, and excitement of so many people coming together! Another great event is the city's annual 4th of July fireworks show--something we can see from our yard! We gather every year with our neighbors for a barbecue and fireworks viewing to celebrate our country's independence. In addition, we have a minor league baseball team, amusement park, and several water parks. We love seeing how many opportunities our community has for children to have fun and enrich their lives with their families.

From Us to You

We appreciate you taking the time to look over our profile. It has been our dream for a long time to grow our family through adoption, and we are excited about this possibility. We have been married since 2017, and our lives continue to become so much more enriched as a team. We are fortunate to be surrounded by loving friends and family, and are excited about the possibility of sharing that with a child. We both feel very fortunate to have grown up with close-knit families. While we recognize no family is perfect, our families did provide a place for us to learn acceptance, responsibility, and how to care for others. These are values that we both strongly share and will teach our future children.

We also want to acknowledge that as a same-sex married couple who wants children, our options for growing our family are different than many other married couples. Adoption is such a wonderful gift, and we are eternally thankful that it is an option for us. We would appreciate your consideration of us to be parents to your child. Being able to raise a child is something we have a strong desire to do, and we would welcome this opportunity with open arms and open hearts.

Our story is somewhat unique in that we had to travel around the world in order to meet, despite spending 4 years at the same university and never meeting. We've both traveled abroad, which has given us such tremendous opportunities to learn from such gifted people throughout the world. It has put us in tough situations where we had to depend on others immensely, and this has brought a deep understanding and humility of the differences in all of our lives. We strive to lead by giving people the benefit of the doubt, and this is a value we want to instill as parents.

This international connection has also birthed a deep desire to see as much of the world as possible, and are excited to share that with our future child. We believe so much healthy perspective can be learned by leaving one's comfort zone, and we routinely try to put ourselves in that situation. Whether it's by exploring gorgeous historic churches in Europe, incredible jungles of Southeast Asia, or camping and hiking in national parks right here in our home state of Kentucky, we enjoy seeing as much of our world as possible.

When we travel, we also appreciate having a comfortable place to come back home to each time, and really enjoy the space that our home and our yard provide us. We love being outside, and greatly enjoy spending time in our garden! Our home is in a diverse neighborhood in a city with lots of international populations, which brings wonderful culture to our lives as we live and work alongside these communities.

Heath gets to spend all of his days as a social worker working with the local refugee community, and Cory is a math teacher in a school with a high population of refugee and immigrant children. We both thoroughly enjoy our work and the amazing people and students that we get to work with, and feel very thankful to be able to do something we both enjoy so much.

As we pursue adoption, we commit to sending letters and pictures of the child to you. We are also open to exchanging of emails, phone calls, and future visits in an open adoption, should you choose this. We believe understanding his/her biological background is an important part of them developing their identity, and we commit to whatever is needed to make sure the child has every opportunity they can for that happen.

We feel so thankful for the life that we have, and would love to share this life with a child through adoption. We appreciate you taking the time to read this, and would love for you to consider us as you weigh this tough and important decision.
