Education We Will Provide

At the Field Museum in Chicago

We greatly value education and plan to support the child's development, curiosity, and interests immediately. Shelly has been teaching infants for almost nine years and believes that very young children are incredibly smart and that the first few years of brain development are vital for a child's future education. Shelly will take on the role of stay-at-home mom and she is enthusiastic to use her teaching experience at home. Her philosophy revolves around Positive Behavior Support, which focuses on building loving relationships, teaching and encouraging expected behavior, and respecting the child as a person with unique traits, challenges, and needs. In the first years, we will use play-based learning to help the child grow, explore, and learn about the world around them. When they reach preschool age, we will enter them into the part time preschool program at the center where Shelly currently works to further develop social-emotional skills and prepare them for school. Our city has a very good public school system which we trust will help a child begin to realize their strengths and interests. As the child grows up, we will support their goals and be open to any path they choose, whether it be community college, a traditional university, trade school, or entering the workforce. We also believe life is an important teacher and we will strive to help a child learn kindness, empathy, and confidence as well as practical skills.

Our Pets

With Rose & Angela

Our pets are very important to us. We both grew up with pets and strongly believe in the positive effect they have on children. We have two cats and a dog, who bring us so much joy. Our older cat, Ivers, has been with us almost ten years; Shelly adopted him on her third day of her past job at the local shelter. Ivers loves to cuddle; he always knows when we're sad or not feeling well and provides comfort. Rose, our rescue German Shorthaired Pointer, is so much fun. Taking her for walks is great stress relief. She loves children and steals hearts everywhere she goes. When our niece and nephew visit she naturally knows how to be gentle, and we look forward to providing her a human sibling. We found our younger cat, Angela, in the Summer of 2020 at Eric's parents' house in the country. She was pregnant and immediately took to Shelly. We researched how to take care of kittens, and she gave birth the day we brought her home. We greatly enjoyed fostering the eight kittens; now they all have loving homes and Angela and Ivers are the best of friends.

Cultural Diversity

Eric is active in his work's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program and understands his privileged position within American society. Through the DEI program and national news coverage, Eric realizes that there is a lot to learn about the different experiences people of color face in America. We are teaching ourselves about cultural diversity through books and cultural community experiences. If we are selected as the adoptive parents of a child with a different race than ourselves, we will ensure the child has opportunities to learn their culture and have interactions with people that look like them. In addition, Eric's sister is in a bi-racial marriage, and has mixed race Black children. We look forward to having an adopted child play with these cousins.

Shelly understands a bit about the emotional struggles that can occur when one is disconnected from their culture. Her family knows very little about their Choctaw roots and this has been disheartening. She is enthusiastic about diving into the child's cultural background and providing activities that explore the child's entire story.

Our House and Neighborhood

We Love Our Backyard!

When we were buying our house, we first fell in love with the backyard. Over a quarter acre, it features open space, plenty of trees, and a sunny spot where we like to garden every summer. Being near the edge of town, we enjoy a variety of wildlife from birds and squirrels to turtles and frogs. We love building a campfire and making s'mores on warm evenings. Shelly loves snow and is looking forward to wintry activities with a child.

Our house itself is unique as the original part of it was built in the 1880s and we believe it was one of the first houses in the neighborhood. Eric enjoys home improvement and we have undertaken several projects, including redecorating our bedroom, building window casings, rebuilding the front porch, and replacing part of the flooring. We love the cozy living room, sunny bedrooms, and shady porch swing.

One of our favorite aspects of our neighborhood is the parks and playgrounds within walking distance. The park nearest our house has tennis and basketball courts and a baseball field, and another has a community garden with a sensory garden area for children. There is also an elementary school, antique and vintage stores, and restaurants. There are many diverse families with young children for a child to grow up with. Our community is a great place to raise a child, with a wonderful library and unique events such as the annual Old Fashioned Christmas Parade.

Our Extended Families

Reading With Our Nephew

Shelly's parents and sister live nearby and we get together often. Shelly's mom loves to cook, so holiday dinners are always something to look forward to. Something unique about Shelly's family is that her grandfather's side is from Grand Cayman. We were fortunate to visit this tiny, beautiful island on our honeymoon. We met several relatives for the first time, including Shelly's namesake cousin, which was very special. Shelly's family is thrilled that we are planning to adopt. Her parents already enjoy their role as grandparents to our pets and cannot wait to love and spoil a grandchild as only a grandma and grandpa can.

Shelly & Our Niece

Eric is the middle child of his family with two younger brothers and an older brother and sister. Eric's sister is the oldest and lives in a nearby town. Two of his brothers live in his hometown near his parents and the other brother lives in the western part of the state. Family gatherings generally involve potluck style meals and card games. Staple family recipes include an orange jello salad and kuchen (sweet rolls stuffed with spiced apricot preserves). Most of Eric's extended family live in the same town as his parents. Eric's family is very excited for us to become parents.

From Us to You

Thank you for reading our profile and getting to know a little about us. We understand you are making an enormous decision, and we truly admire your bravery. We already know that considering adoption for your child means you have a kind and loving heart. If you decide to go forward with adoption and you choose us to love your child, we look forward to building our relationship with you in accordance with your preferences. We will send letters and pictures of the child with as much frequency as you desire. We also understand that your preferences for contact and updates may change over time, and we are flexible as the child grows. We are committed to your child knowing their whole story, and treasuring your role in their life.

We have been together since June of 2010 and married since June of 2013. We met at our alma mater, the University of Kansas, when we were members of the Marching Jayhawks. Something unique about us is that we are also sorority sisters. We joined Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Service Sorority in the fall semester of 2009, and became close friends before we started dating. We cherish our time in these groups, and still enjoy supporting the Marching Jayhawks and being active alumni of TBS. Our relationship is built upon a strong level of commitment. Early on in our relationship, Shelly was diagnosed with a chronic illness. Eric showed unwavering loyalty, and we have worked to face this challenge together. Shelly's illness is under control and we are ready to take the next step in building our family.

If you choose to go forward with adoption, and if we are selected as the adoptive parents for your child, we are committed to sharing their adoption story with them. If you are comfortable, we will include you as much as we can at age appropriate times to let them know their full story. We understand that you are making a complex decision and are grateful for your attention to our profile. We are open to your communication preferences and we are happy to contact you through calls, texts, or email.

As parents, we look forward to teaching your child the value of education. We plan to support the child's development, curiosity, and interests as they grow. Shelly will take on the role of stay at home mom; she has been teaching infants for almost nine years and she is passionate about early learning. The center where she currently works has a wonderful part time preschool program, and our city has diverse public schools as well. As your child grows, we will support their goals and be open to any path they choose, whether it be community college, a traditional university, trade school, or entering the workforce. We also believe kindness, empathy, and courage are as important as formal education and will take your child where they want to go in life.

In our free time, we enjoy local events such as art shows and outdoor festivals, spending time with friends and family, and various hobbies. Shelly is an avid knitter and reader, and Eric likes to take on home improvement projects and he is a computer nerd. Our huge backyard is great for gardening, relaxing in a hammock, and sitting around a campfire. We have a dog and two cats who will be wonderful companions for a child. We both have fond memories of family vacations and look forward to travelling with a child, including visits with you if that is something you desire.

We are grateful for your consideration and are supportive of your decision, whatever it may be. If you choose adoption, and if you choose us, we look forward to raising your child in a safe and loving home, and including you in their life as you wish.

Best wishes,

Eric & Shelly
