What It Means to Be Parents

Playing in the Fall Leaves

Being a parent is both the biggest challenge we've ever taken on and the greatest gift all at once. Being parents made us look deeper into what we value most and where our time is spent. We believe above all else that we want to make our children feel loved, valued, and respected. Unexpectedly, our favorite thing about being a parent is not tangible, but is watching Jackson gain confidence and step outside of his comfort zone to try new things. This brings us so much joy and pride to see our little guy grow and get excited about learning new things. We have spent many hours watching soccer practice and seeing him find us in the crowd with his eyes lit up and the full smile on his face after coming out of his shell and scoring his first goal will be a memory we will always treasure. The excitement we get will never wear off watching Jackson experience things for the first time such as writing his letters and numbers, finding new animals at the zoo, hiking to the top of a mountain, scoring soccer goals, riding a bike, and learning how to drive a remote-controlled monster truck.

Our Lifestyle

Our Church Group

Our lifestyle is adventurous while maintaining structure and routine. We love to surround ourselves with friends and family, so we like to stay busy. However, we always make it a point to eat dinner together as a family. We value this time together at the end of our days to reconnect as a family.

Family Hike

We also value connecting with other young families, so every week we get together to meet with our church group. This group is composed of 9 families with children ranging from 9 months to 5 years old, so there are always kids running around playing. We love taking this time every week to get together in fellowship, study the bible, and eat tasty food. It is so nice to have a great group of kids for Jackson to grow close to and play games with while we spend time together as adults.

We love to travel as a family, whether it's trips further away or long weekends exploring areas closer to us. Hiking in the mountains, going to theme parks, or exploring new cities are some of our favorite adventures.

If we are not traveling, our weekends are usually spent hiking the trails close by, or playing soccer and freeze tag in the backyard. We try to attend local sporting events to cheer on our favorite teams from baseball, to soccer, and football. We believe experiences make for the best memories so we try to have as much quality time doing fun things as a family as possible.

Our Family Traditions

Merry Christmas!

We believe that traditions, along with experiences, are a big part of what keeps a family close so we have tried to implement family traditions not only during the holidays but also in our daily lives. Every Friday we have a movie night where we pick up carry-out food, put on our pajamas, and cuddle up on the couch to watch a movie.

Birthdays are a big deal in Leah's family. Every birthday is celebrated at Leah's grandparents' house with a home cooked lunch and then time spent relaxing and playing games like Monopoly, Jenga, and Uno.

We love spending Christmas Eve at Leah's grandparents' where we enjoy a Christmas dinner, reading of the Christmas story from the Bible, and then opening presents in age order all while snacking on Christmas candy. Then, on Christmas Day we spend the day at our home in pajamas. In our opinion, there's no better way to fully enjoy comfortable, low-pressure family time playing with Jackson than in our PJs in our own home. We hope these are the traditions our children will remember fondly when they think of the holidays.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in a suburb of Kentucky and our home is located on a cul-de-sac in a neighborhood that is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the adjacent larger city. We live in an open concept 2-story home with 4 bedrooms, 2 playrooms, and a fenced-in backyard. Although we have playrooms, our favorite room in the house is the warm, cozy family room. We love to play board games, enjoy movie night Fridays, watch baking shows, as well as playing soccer in the living room. We just added a playset in the backyard where Jackson loves climbing the rock wall and running across the swinging bridge.

Our neighborhood is a mix of older and younger families. There are always kids running around the neighborhood, playing basketball in the driveways, and riding bikes. There are also 4 parks and walking trails all within a 10 minute drive. Living so close to multiple larger cities allows us to take advantage of great family activities like zoos, aquariums, museums, farmer's markets, and hiking trails.

Our Extended Families

Leah's Family

Leah has an older sister, Leslie, who is happily married and has a sweet daughter, Georgia, who is almost one-year-old! They live a few hours away so we regularly get to spend quality time with them and Jackson loves being a helpful, big cousin to Georgia. Leah's parents live very close so we often see them for family dinners and hangouts on the weekends where we attend art festivals, sporting events, and play outside. Leah's grandparents also live very close by so we are blessed to have weekly dinners at their home where we get to spend time together and Jackson gets to grow closer to his great-grandparents.

With Jake's Siblings

Jake has an older brother, Joey, and a younger sister, Lauren, who live about 10-20 minutes from our home. Neither of them have children so they love spending time with their nephew, playing games, and taking him fishing. They cannot wait to add another niece/nephew to the family to share all the love and attention with.

From Us to You

We are Jake and Leah. We have a four-year-old son named Jackson and we are humbled that you would take the time to learn more about us and consider us as a part of your adoption plan. Should you ultimately choose adoption and us as your child's parents, we want you to know that we plan to honor your courageous and selfless decision by making sure your child knows their adoption story. Our hearts will always be open to answering any questions they may have, along with age appropriate, candid discussions. They will know the immense love you had for them even before they came into this world. We will also do everything we can to ensure your child feels ownership in their story and are proud of where they came from. We look forward to sharing updates about all of the things they are learning and accomplishing whichever way you prefer - letters, photos, emails, or phone calls.

We were introduced by a friend when we were sophomores in high school and shortly after began dating in 2007. We continued dating through college and after receiving our college degrees, we were married in the summer of 2015. After being a couple for half of our lives, we have a very close and unique relationship that is hard to find. Not only have we grown up together but we have watched each other discover our place in the world, and we have walked together through various hardships that have challenged us and required us to lean on one another but ultimately strengthened our connection and communication with one another.

A few years after getting married, our journey in parenthood began when we welcomed our son, Jackson, in 2018. We instantly loved being parents and enjoy taking Jackson on so many adventures, all while watching him discover the beauties of life. A few years later we decided it was time to expand our family and begin the journey to parenthood again. After experiencing multiple lost pregnancies at various stages, we decided that having another biological child was not going to be possible. While the heartbreak we endured after each loss was devastating, we knew that we still wanted to grow our family. We had discussed the possibility of adoption in years past but after much time spent in prayer and researching all of the options, our hearts completely opened to the world of adoption. Jackson is ecstatic to become a big brother and already talks about the toys that he will share, the games they will play, and how he will teach them to play soccer.

We are thrilled to be embarking on this next adventure in our life and are so honored you have taken the time to read this letter. We promise that we will advocate for your child, support them through life's adversities, and provide a stable home surrounded with love. We are praying for peace, wisdom, and healing for you as you make your decision and continue on this journey.

Sincerely,

Jake & Leah
