Our Lifestyle

Saturday Morning Coffee Date

We would describe our lives as quiet and comfortable, balanced with exploring any new adventure we can experience around us. The balance we've created is influenced by the strong connections we have with our friends and family. We believe it's the people you spend your time with, not what you do, that makes how you spend your time special.

We have been lucky enough to find our dream jobs. Kelly is a school counselor at a middle school. She loves that no day in education looks or feels the same; each day she has the ability to help her students be successful and their families feel supported. Grey is a data scientist at a large agriculture equipment manufacturer. He enjoys his ability to use math and computers in every project to find solutions to complicated problems- each day brings a new puzzle to solve.

In our spare time we enjoy board games, live music, and movies with friends and family. When we aren't spending time with others, Kelly enjoys baking, painting, and making candles. Some of Grey's favorite hobbies include playing guitar, 3D printing, and working on house projects - he loves finding opportunities to work with his hands. We look forward to sharing what we love and creating wonderful memories with our growing family.

Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

At a Friend's Wedding

Grey About Kelly: I fell in love with Kelly for her empathy, compassion, and passion for helping others. She's incredibly genuine, has a wonderful sense of humor, and always finds the perfect balance between being thoughtful and direct; she always seems to know exactly what to say, and when to say it. I know she always has my back. Kelly is my best friend, and I couldn't ask for a better life partner. I have enjoyed every adventure our lives have taken us on, and I look forward to this new adventure as we continue our adoption journey and grow our family. I know that any child in our care will be supported and loved endlessly, and there isn't a shred of doubt in my mind that Kelly will be an amazing parent.

Kelly About Grey: I consider myself very lucky to have Grey in my life. He's my best friend and an amazing life partner! I have never met anyone who is as unconditionally supportive as he is. He helped me recognize my own inner strength and I'm a better person because of him. I have always admired his kindness and thoughtfulness towards myself and others. Grey is a loving husband, and through our experience as foster parents, has shown me that he is and will be a loving father. He has a big heart and is ready to provide all the care, life lessons, and love to raise a child of our own. I'm so grateful to have him. I treasure all that we've done together so far, our journey we are on now with you, and what our future holds.

Cultural Diversity

We know that having a home that addresses and celebrates diversity is a lifelong commitment.

As foster parents, our home is open to children of all cultural backgrounds, and we continue educating ourselves to create an environment that's inclusive and understanding.

In her career as a school counselor, Kelly works with a diverse group of students and their families. She is devoted to learning about different cultural backgrounds to find the best way to support her students. Grey works with people from around the world and loves learning about the different cultures of his coworkers. He also volunteers his time at work leading discussions on topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

It is important to us that any child raised in our home feels a sense of connection to their own cultural background, and we recognize that it may be different from our own. As parents, embracing our child's culture is very important to us and always will be. We will seek out opportunities within our community that represent our child's culture to help build that sense of connection. We are also committed to learning from friends and colleagues who share similar cultural backgrounds to our child. We also want to learn from you; we know that one of the greatest connections we can have to our child's background is the answers you can give us as we go through this journey together.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We have a warm and welcoming home, which at any given time is filled with music, friends, or the sounds of paws on the floor.

We have two dogs named Zeke and Maisie, two cats named Dewey and Dumpling, and a colorful fish. Our dogs and cats love belly rubs, snuggling, and are very friendly with everyone they meet. We are lucky to have the best pets around!

Park Within Walking Distance of Our Home

Our house is in a quiet neighborhood in the suburbs of a large city in Iowa. We have a spacious, fenced, backyard with a large garden and plenty of room to play. There are many parks within walking distance of our home, as well as bike trails and a lovely community garden.

We live in a great school district and have a wonderful local library.

Outside of our neighborhood we are surrounded by many shops and restaurants, with no shortage of things to do. Some of our kid-friendly favorites include the city zoo and science center.

We live in a growing part of town, and we find new places to go and things to do all the time. We know that whether we decide to relax at home or adventure out into our community, we will always be able to find ways to enjoy every day.

Our Extended Families

Kelly & Her Sister

We both come from smaller families, with one younger sibling each.

Kelly is very close to her sister who recently graduated college. Her parents moved further away after retirement and they do a great job keeping in touch.

Grey & Our Nephew

Grey is the son of two very kind and caring parents, has a very supportive brother, and a wonderful nephew. His family lives much closer - just a few short hours away - with his parents and brother's family all living in his hometown. Grey is also lucky enough to have two grandparents that live close by, whom we visit often.

We have close relationships with our family. We also each cherish memories of the many road trips, vacations, holiday gatherings, and cookouts we had growing up. We recognize how important those experiences were to us and are eager to continue creating similar memories as our family grows. Our families have surrounded us with love and support our whole lives and are excited to see our family grow.

From Us to You

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. We understand you have faced challenging decisions and may still have more to come. We are grateful to be considered as part of your journey and would love for you to be part of ours.

We met in college where we first knew each other as co-workers, then as friends, and began dating a few years later. Our first date was accidental! Grey was about to move to a new city after he graduated and had put in his two weeks at the job where we worked together. We met up one last time before he left; it wasn't until about halfway through the night that we both realized it had turned into a date. We dated long distance for a time while Kelly continued her education before moving in together. We both love animals, so it didn't take long for our little family to have more pets than people! We eventually got married in 2018 and began looking into ways to grow our family.

We have known since early in our relationship that having biological children would be difficult for us. We always knew adoption would be part of our journey and also discovered we had a shared desire to care for foster children. In 2020 we became licensed foster parents and opened our home to children who needed a safe and supportive home, when they needed it most. Taking the role of a foster parent presents its own unique challenges but has also provided us many opportunities to learn about ourselves as parents and how to care for a child in our home. Through fostering, we cared for children with ADHD, anxiety, and other mental health diagnoses. We advocated for additional supports for the child by reaching out to professionals to make sure that we were knowledgeable on the best strategies to set them up for success. It was after saying goodbye to our latest foster placement that we realized the time was right for us to pursue adoption.

Through fostering we learned about how to parent as a team and lean into each other's strengths. Kelly has had limited mobility of her right hand since birth. She has spent her whole life adapting to find new and different ways to do things; Grey is always amazed at the solutions she comes up with and how it never stops her.

We are stronger together - from navigating the foster system and caring for the children in our home, to the natural ups and downs of being together nearly a decade- through it all, we've yet to find anything we aren't able to do as a team. We know that we have a strong foundation to be parents. We are ready, our home is ready, and our hearts are ready to welcome a child into our lives.

Our hope for the future is that any child raised in our home will know unconditional love and support. The role of a parent is very important to us, and we promise to learn from each and every day to make the next one a better one; we will always put the needs of the child first. We will raise them to follow their passions, care for others, and do their best.

We believe the decision you're making takes strength and compassion, and we will always respect your choice. Our fostering experiences have taught us the importance of the connection between you and our family and we will always welcome you to be a part of our life. We would be happy to have that include in-person visits and sending you frequent letters and emails with life updates and photos. Your role in our future, whatever you may choose for that to be, we will always cherish.

We hope you have gotten to know us a little bit better. Thank you for allowing us to share our life with you.
