A Walk On The Beach

Abby is blessed to be able to step away from work in order to be a full-time, stay-at-home mom with our child. She is grateful not to miss a moment of their childhood by placing them with a nanny or in child care. David’s work is also flexible (and partially remote) which will allow him plenty of good, quality time at home. We can’t wait to welcome our child into the family and home that we have built together.

During our leisure time, we love to be outdoors exploring. We look forward to the day when we can bring our child along with us for sunset at the beach, hiking to waterfalls, or finding constellations through Grandpa’s telescope. We also love trying new foods! Living near the city of Honolulu, we are lucky to have some of the best Japanese and Korean food in the country. Sometimes it's fun to try (and not always succeed!) to recreate our favorite foods at home.

On the weekends, we often spend a day with Abby’s parents. They are excited grandparents who already have a garage stocked with snorkels, fishing poles, bikes, nets, and floats just waiting for grandchildren to visit. Most Saturday nights are spent grilling at the pool or having movie nights together. In the end, what matters most is spending time together with people we love.

Addressing Cultural Diversity

Horseback Riding in Mongolia

We’ve traveled to many countries in Asia, South America, and Africa and have fallen in love with many diverse cultural expressions. Hawaii itself is one of the most racially-diverse places in the world. Around 25% of Hawaii comes from multi-ethnic backgrounds. The most prominent ethnicities are from the Pacific Islands and Asia. We believe cultural diversity within a family is a beautiful thing. David knows this personally, as he comes from a family with three siblings adopted from Liberia.

David Playing Guitar

If we adopt a child with a different ethnicity than ours, we are committed to weaving this culture into our lives and traditions. This can be done in so many ways such as traditional recipes, music, clothing, language, and history. We’re excited to enrich our family (and extended family) by learning about their culture and heritage.

Other ways we will celebrate our child’s cultural diversity: Talk with extended family about new traditions to include during holidays. Find mentors and role models for our child from their racial or cultural backgrounds. Have open discussions about race. Share our family's diverse cultural backgrounds (German, Spanish, Cuban, Liberian, etc) with our child. Above all, ensure they know how much they are loved and cherished for exactly who they are.

How Adoption has Affected Me/Us Personally

David and His Brother at Yellowstone

David has four adopted siblings. His youngest brother was adopted as an infant. He also has three siblings adopted together from Liberia. Because adoption is woven into the fabric of his family, it was a frequent topic of conversation for us before we were married. We often dreamed about it being a part of our story as well.

David & Abigail

Shortly after we were married, Abigail spent two years as a caseworker for a private foster care and adoption agency. She had the honor of walking with birth parents and adoptive families through the process. Because of this, she had the privilege of seeing firsthand the beauty and complexity of adoption.

Today we have friends and family who are adopted, have adopted, and have made adoption plans for their children. Adoption has deeply affected us both on a personal level and we are looking forward to it being a part of our story.

Our House and Neighborhood

Home Sweet Home

Hawaii - Our home is nestled in a quiet, green valley in the Hawaiian islands. Its nickname is "the Valley of Rainbows" because every day of the year it is canopied in rainbows from gentle rainfall. With jungle streams, tropical flowers, and brightly colored parakeets - it really is a piece of paradise!

We are a short walk away from a park, playground, and community pool as well as a beautiful elementary and middle school. Every weekend the park is filled with children playing every sport imaginable.

Our Living Room

The best part about our community is that we know all of our neighbors. On a weekly basis we will be at our neighbor's homes for barbecues, game nights, or just to borrow a cup of sugar (really!). Many of our friends have children between 0-5 years old. They are always riding bikes and playing on the swing set nearby. On weekends our friends often set up their bounce house for the neighborhood kids to play in.

Hawaii is truly a melting pot of cultures and our community is no exception. We feel blessed to live in such a diverse area, with families from a wide variety of backgrounds and customs. Although our neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful, we are only a fifteen minute drive away from the city of Honolulu with museums, cultural centers, and theaters.

Our Extended Families

Abby's Family at Their Cabin in New Mexico

We live a short drive away from Abby's parents and their little dog, Chief. We spend most weekends with them grilling by the pool and biking to a nearby lagoon. They are already amazing grandparents and can't wait to have another grandchild (especially one close by!). Abby's Dad built a small saltwater aquarium for his granddaughters. He takes them to the beach with nets to collect starfish and crabs.

David's Family at the Lake

Abby's three brothers are already fun, protective, loving uncles! They will love teaching their new niece/nephew all sorts of important things like magic tricks, bike riding, and swimming. When we get together, Abby's family loves competitions! During Christmas we host a “Family Olympics” with events that include ping-pong, painting, scavenger hunts, and baking.

Every summer we visit David's family in Ohio. These visits are filled with baseball games, blueberry picking, kayaking, and catching fireflies. With thirteen (and counting) nieces and nephews and four (and counting) boxer puppies, these visits are both fun and loud! David's parents own a small cabin on the lake, where we spend our weekends. Every year we look forward to making s'mores around the fire and going out on the boat with the puppies and cousins in tow.

Both of our families were overjoyed to hear that we are adopting and cannot wait to welcome this child into the family.

From Us to You

Hi! It’s hard to put into words how grateful we are that you would consider us as adoptive parents. Whether you do or do not choose adoption, we pray that you have peace as you make the decision that is best for you and your child.

We are David and Abby. We first met 16 years ago when Abby literally “ran into” David during a competitive game of pick-up soccer. Abby was a theater-kid and David loved basketball. We were teenagers at the time, but within six months we were dating and in three years were married. Now we’ve been married for twelve years! In that time we’ve built a fun-loving and dedicated marriage that has stood the test of time.

In 2019 we decided to start trying to get pregnant. Naively, we assumed our journey to pregnancy would be as easy as it had been for our friends and family. What followed were three years of testing, blood work, screenings and ultrasounds without answers. Over those years we realized having biological children may not be our story. Although we loved our life together, we knew we wanted to share it with children.

In the end, our decision to adopt came naturally. As Christians, we see adoption as a beautiful metaphor of how we have been adopted as sons and daughters into the family of God. Because of this, adoption was one of our first dreams together as teenagers. We’re honored to make it part of our story.

We work for a Christian missions organization that has taken us around the world together. We currently live and work in the beautiful Hawaiian islands. Abby plans on being a stay-at-home mom, so she can soak up every minute with her kids. David also enjoys a flexible work schedule that will allow him to be home with his family often.

When we envision our lives with children, it brings us incredible joy. We see ourselves bringing them on hikes to jungle waterfalls, playing on the beach at sunset, and having cozy game nights after dinner. We look forward to bringing them into our family traditions as well. Every summer we spend time at David’s family cabin in Ohio. The days are filled with fishing, kayaking on the lake, and exploring small islands by boat. We can’t wait to see our child making s’mores with their cousins by the campfire, or on the beaches in Hawaii hunting for crabs. We can’t wait to take them around the world and introduce them to cultures they’ve never experienced before! We long for the day we have them cuddled up with Abby reading a story, or singing songs with David on the guitar.

If you choose us to be your child’s family, we want you to know that they will be loved fully and unconditionally. Our family and friends are already excitedly waiting to welcome them home with open arms and hearts. If you choose us, we hope to start a lifelong relationship with you as well. If it is something you’re comfortable with, we would love to have an open relationship with you. It would be wonderful to send you photos and videos of milestones, birthdays, and every-day events in your child’s life. We are open to exchanging emails and phone calls so that you can see how they are growing. We are also open to arrange a visit when you feel the time is right. In our family, your child will always know about you and your deep love and care for them. We are committed to celebrating their adoption story and honoring your place in their lives.

It’s hard to put into words how much it would mean to us to welcome a baby into our family. We are committed to raising your child in a safe and loving home, providing him or her with what they need to become everything they were created to be. Our prayers are with you and we look forward to the journey ahead.
