How We Met

Southwest Trip for Our First Anniversary

We met each other in college through a mutual friend. Sean was starting his first year and Jay was in town visiting. Sean went to school in Ithaca NY. At the time, Jay was starting his 3rd year of college in Chicago, but occasionally returned to Ithaca in order to visit his family.

After we met, we exchanged Facebook profiles in order to stay connected. We didn’t end up connecting again for another year, but thank goodness we got each other's contact info! We decided to meet up next time Jay was in Ithaca. After hanging out for the first time, we decided rather spontaneously, to take a big trip together the following Spring Break. We had a wild trip to Los Angeles with a plenty of adventure and great memories that we remember fondly.

After that trip, the first romantic sparks started to develop; though we remained friends until Sean graduated from college. When he moved to Chicago for work, where Jay was still living, we hit it off right away and started dating shortly after.

Our Professional Life

Hotel Work Can Be Fun!

Sean became interested in hotels while attending Cornell University, where he started working a part-time job at the Statler Hotel. While he officially studied pre-vet in Animal Sciences, he also took a course at the School of Hotel Management in pursuit of his hospitality passion. Currently, he works at a luxury hotel in Downtown Chicago as a Sales Manager. He loves the travel benefits that his work brings, as well as the excitement of developing relationships with clients and planning large events at the hotel. Jay, on the other hand, has always taken an interest in Math. He has built his career in Data Science where he appreciates the mix of Computer Programming and Practical Mathematics. Data Science is also a dynamic field, with constantly improving research and technology that ensures that he’s always learning something new. Currently, Jay manages a team of Data Scientists that develop search and recommendation algorithms for an ecommerce company.

We both work regular business hours, which is extremely important to us, as it allows for us to maintain a good work-life balance and spend quality time together. While Sean mostly works on-site at his hotel, Jay primarily works from home. We believe that this extra flexibility will be especially valuable for managing parenting responsibilities.

Our Pets

Our Dog, Kasper

At home, we have three pets: Kasper the dog, Dizzy the gecko, and Iris the chameleon. Growing up, pets were always a big part of our lives, and as children helped teach us about responsibility. Dogs and cats especially provided us with unconditional love and affection, while embodying empathy and positivity in a way that impressed upon us.

Beyond simply building responsibility and giving us unconditional love, pets are fun! Kasper gets two walks a day, loves to play tug of war, and is way too excited to see our friends and family, during their visits. Dizzy is very curious and surprisingly active, though only at night. She will stare at you, then quickly approach once you start filling her food dish, all while hanging upside down in her glass terrarium. Iris, on the other hand, is a bit of a loner. She gives wicked side eye while subtly changing color to blend in, hoping you don’t see her. However, if bringing a fresh cricket, she springs into action with her laser-quick and stretchy tongue.

Without pets, our home would feel empty. We are excited to share our current pets with a child, and even more excited for them to take on the responsibility of caring for new pets in the future.

Our Extended Families

With Jay's Family

Family is an important part of our lives. In fact, the positive example provided to us by both sets of parents, who have been happily married for 25+ years, is one big reason why we feel prepared and excited to build our own family.

With Sean's Cousins

Jay grew up in Upstate NY with his parents and five siblings. When we’re home in Chicago, Jay likes to keep in touch with his brothers through video gaming and cheering on their favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills. Jay’s parents work with international university students, and when he was growing up, their home became a home-away-from-home for many students over the years. Some of those relationships have developed into lifelong bonds, and Jay feels fortunate to have a diverse group of people to call family.

Sean grew up in a military family with his parents and two younger brothers. For most of his childhood, they moved from place to place with his Dad’s deployments and postings. Now both his parents work in the government, and the family has a stable home of many years near a river with tons of nature. Sean keeps up with the family through video calls and likes to chat with him Mom about cooking and recipes, as she is a professional chef.

Over the past several years, we have enjoyed getting to know each other’s families. Every year, we have a tradition of making road trips to New York & Virginia for the holidays; they are always one of the highlights of our year.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Condo

We bought our first condo in Evanston, IL around the time we got married. We had previously been living in an apartment in a nearby suburb, but were drawn to Evanston for its balance of walkability, access to culture, and green space. Evanston is the first suburb north of Chicago, meaning that we’re just a train ride away from museums, sports stadiums, the Zoo, and a whole host of other activities that we’re excited to experience again through a child’s eyes.

At the same time, we enjoy a neighborhood where restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream shops, public parks, and the beach are all just a short walk away. Parents in our neighborhood are also able to take advantage of nearby playgrounds as well as a play area hosted by our local Montessori elementary school.

While we will eventually outgrow our current home, our condo is the perfect size for a small family. We appreciate the convenience of indoor parking, a swimming pool, and onsite maintenance support for those occasions when something goes wrong. Perhaps our favorite perk, though, is our balcony. In the summer, passersby can catch up out there grilling or relaxing in the sun.

From Us to You

Thanks for taking the time to learn a bit about who we are and our hopes for the future. While we don't know the exact circumstances you face, we understand that this is a challenging time as you try to make difficult choices for yourself and your child. We want you to know that we would always love your child and do everything in our power to support their passions and help them reach their full potential.

Jay (30) grew up primarily in Upstate and Western New York in a large but close-knit family with his parents, four brothers and one sister. After high school, he moved to the Chicago area to attend Northwestern University, where he studied Statistics and Economics. This ignited a passion for Data and Analytics, and set up an eventual career in Data Science. He now leads a team at an e-commerce company here in Chicago.

Sean (28), on the other hand, grew up in a military family with his parents and two younger brothers. Though the family moved 9 times before Sean was 12 years old, he calls Northern Virginia home. He studied at Cornell University as a pre-vet student in Animal Sciences, but ultimately decided to pursue a career in hotels and hospitality. After graduation, he came to Chicago where he loves his job as a Sales Manager at a luxury hotel Downtown.

Our relationship started as a friendship during Sean’s first week in college. By chance, we met through a mutual friend and kept up with each other over the 4 years we both were at different colleges. In 2017, we both were in Chicago working and started dating. Because we had been such good friends for so long, our relationship progressed quickly. We moved in together the summer of 2018, got our beloved dog Kasper in 2019, and then spent Covid-19 in quarantine together. 2021 was a big year as we bought our first home and got married in the same year. Shortly after, we started talking about the idea of children.

We both would love to be parents, as we had wonderful and happy childhoods ourselves. We come from different but complementary backgrounds, and know that our shared life experiences would allow us to raise and support great kids. Jay is Swedish-American while Sean is African-American. Jay grew up Christian Evangelical while Sean went to Southern Black churches. Together, we value intellectual curiosity, compassion, empathy, and respect for others. We also love trying new foods, exploring new places, and spending time in nature.

This is just a little about us, but we hope to get to know you! Tell us about your own journey and hopes for the future. We would love to stay engaged in the way that feels right for you. In addition to providing letters and photos to keep you in the loop about your child's progress and milestones, we would also be happy to stay in touch in other ways. Email, text, video chats, and in-person visits are all great for us.

Thanks again for hearing us out! We wish you the best no matter where this journey takes you.

Best Wishes,

Jay & Sean
