Ken & Sarah
We are a fun-loving couple who have been happily married for over 10 years. When we decided we were ready to start a family, adoption was always the plan. We believe adoption is a gift, and one that we will always cherish. Thank you for taking the time to read our profile. Know that if you choose us, your child will have a cozy and fulfilling life, full of love and adventure.
We have the advantage of living in a major city, with cultural diversity at every turn. Our group of friends consists of people from all different backgrounds; black, white, Asian, Hispanic; all of whom are proud of their culture and open to sharing their experiences. Sarah’s sister in law is Japanese and Sarah’s cousin has adopted an African American daughter, Zephana. We can’t wait for our children to know each other and share their special bond. Our child will spend a lot of time with our friends and their children. We will actively seek out schools that have a diverse body of students and teachers. Our home library will be full of books with main characters who are African American. The California African American Museum is just a 20 minute drive from where we live. It is a fantastic museum and we will be sure to frequent it from the start. When he or she gets older we’ll introduce them to the work of acclaimed black performers, writers, and directors.
We will not take the “colorblind approach” to raising this child. We will celebrate our child’s race. Race does matter and we will do our best to raise our child to be a proud Black person. We will raise them to be confident and empowered. We both work in jobs where we have direct connections with black professionals, and we look forward to introducing our child to our black colleagues.
The saying is true; we work hard and play hard. Ken’s job in television can be demanding during the TV season, but when there is time off, we use it well. While Sarah is dedicated to her job, she does work from home, so her hours are more flexible. Both of us get ample vacation time, which we use to go see family in other states, as well as for more adventurous vacations. We try to travel abroad at least every 2 years, and have been to Japan, Israel, and Europe. Up next on our travel wish list are Alaska, an African safari and possibly going to the 2020 Olympics in Japan.
While we’re at home, we like to relax. We workout at our neighborhood gym at least three times per week where kids are also welcome. We explore our neighborhood by checking out new restaurants; there seems to be new spots opening up all the time! We are both active and physically fit which allows us to pursue hobbies like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and other outdoor activities. We are animal lovers and will always have a dog or two in our home. We believe in arts & education and would raise your child with a focus on both. During the summer, we spend time at our rooftop pool. Your child will learn to swim early on! We end each day by reading in bed. Ken is into novels; mostly Stephen King and William Gibson, Sarah prefers memoirs by women she admires.
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Ken is an avid snowboarder and Sarah is an avid skier, so our favorite vacations spots are ski resorts. We absolutely love Park City, UT, but for a quicker trip, we head 5 hours north to Mammoth Mountain. Both of these resorts offer lessons for children of all ages; as long as they can walk. Have you ever seen a toddler on a snowboard? It is the cutest! Our hope is that our child will enjoy these sports as much as we do so this is something we can do as a family for the rest of our lives. When it’s not winter, we have several favorite vacation spots; many of which are right here in California. One of our favorite getaways is Palm Springs. We will go out there with family, with friends, or by ourselves. It’s a small town with a lot to do. It’s a very relaxing place to be, but we can also play tennis, golf, and go shopping. They have a pretty amazing zoo there with desert animals, and there is a tram you can take to the top of a mountain where it feels like a whole different world.
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in the heart of a very diverse city in California. We live in a loft, in a neighborhood that has a vast amount of beautiful murals on nearly every building. There is art everywhere! When we moved to this neighborhood in 2007, it was considered more of an up and coming area. These days, it’s a bustling, walkable, bikeable, family-friendly neighborhood with wonderful coffee shops, unique restaurants, and fun stores on every street. There is a brand new, gorgeous park directly across the street with a lot of green space and a state-of-the-art playground area.
Our loft is a little over 1,000 square feet with an open floor plan. We have plenty of room for a child to grow and play. We also have a courtyard for playing and picnics, and a community pool. We hope to buy a single-family home soon when the timing is right. We will still stay in the city, but likely in an area that is less busy; a place with 3 bedrooms and a yard. Another fantastic part about our home is the accessibility to everything a family could ever want. We have the beach, mountains, the desert, skiing, hiking, camping, and Disneyland; all within a 30 minute to 2 hour drive.
Our Extended Families
Ken’s parents live in the suburbs of Chicago in the home where Ken grew up, but they spend their winters in Phoenix, AZ. They frequently travel to Los Angeles to spend time with our family. Ken’s only brother, lives near us with his wife and their daughter, Daphne. We love having our niece nearby and spend as much time with her as we possibly can!
Sarah has a large extended family starting with two brothers. Lenny lives in the suburbs of Chicago and has 3 children. Dan and his wife, Aya live in Seattle. Sarah is very close with her brothers, as well as her 4 aunts, 4 uncles, and 7 cousins. She grew up spending summers and holidays with her entire extended family. Though her extended family is mostly in the midwest, they get together frequently and it’s always a huge, family lovefest! Now, her cousins are having kids of their own - 10 and counting - so the family is growing quickly! Our family reunions are huge!
We also have a very tight-knit group of friends in LA who are truly family. Several of our friends have young children, and more are planning their families right along with us. Your child will grow up with many playmates who we see often, travel with, and are very much connected to.
From Us to You
We are honored that you are taking the time to learn more about us - thank you! We know this a difficult time in your life and we are humbled by your love, strength, and bravery in making an adoption plan. You have our deepest respect and admiration for making this decision. While we don’t know your circumstances, we do know that you have a tremendous amount of love for your child, and we promise to convey that love to them from the moment they are placed in our arms.
The two of us met shortly after graduating from the same college in Chicago. We somehow never crossed paths on campus, even though we had the same major. It wasn’t until we both moved to California to pursue our careers that we met. It was pretty much love at first sight and only took about 5 weeks to become serious. We like to think that destiny brought us together and we’re still going strong!
We promise to give your child a loving, fun, adventurous home. We will send pictures and letters to you - as much or however often you would like. We love to travel, so know that your child will see our country and the world. From road trips up the coast of California, to annual ski trips, to family reunions on a lake or a cruise ship, to overseas adventures; life experience through travel is a top priority for us.
Our dreams for our family also extend beyond travel. We want to teach and nurture a child throughout their lives. We want to give them a well-rounded education; from birth through college. We love finding educational opportunities in everything! We love museums, amusement parks, nature, art, and sports as much as we love cuddling on the couch with a great book or movie. In almost everything we do, we imagine sharing the experience with a child. We will do everything we can to raise a child with strong character and work ethic, while also encouraging them to fully explore their interests. We are devoted to ensuring that your child reaches their full potential and happiness.
Adoption has always been our journey since we decided we were ready to grow our family and we have been preparing for a few years. We’ve immersed ourselves in learning all we could about adoption and feel truly ready for a child to join our family. We know that adoption will be an amazing experience; one that our entire family is supportive of and excited about. Your child will be born into a large family filled with aunts, uncles, and grandparents who can’t wait to spoil them with love! He or she will join several cousins, including another adopted cousin on the East coast!
Your child will always know that they are adopted. They will know that you loved them so much that you decided on an adoption plan. We think that bedtime stories are going to be one of the best times for us to connect and share our adoption story. We will read books to them about adoption. We’ll tell them their story whenever there’s an opening. We will never be dishonest in any way when he or she asks questions about adoption; no matter how hard those questions may be. We also want him or her to know you; who you are and where he or she came from.
Life is messy. It won’t always be perfect. However, please know in your heart that your child will be loved. Fully and forever. We will be grateful to you for the rest of our lives. Thank you for taking the time to read about our family. We would love to talk with you and answer any questions you may have.
With love and respect,
Ken & Sarah
