Josh & Joanna

Some people dream of fancy clothes, cars and vacations. Our dreams look more like diapers, play dates and field trips. We've talked about adoption since before we married and are passionate about providing a loving, safe, happy and, yes, slightly geeky home for your baby. We look forward to learning about you and your hopes, dreams, worries and wishes for this child.

Our Leisure Time

Josh Learned to Use the Laser Cutter at the Community Woodshop

In our spare time you'll find us out around town with friends, going to the pool, going to the library, cooking, sailing, skiing, or traveling to new places. We look forward to doing these activities as a family soon. Josh likes activities that are hands-on and challenging. He enjoys designing, building, and fixing small electronics at home and takes pride in being handy around the house, from installing new light fixtures to fixing broken furniture. He likes playing team sports like ultimate frisbee and can't wait to share the joys of sports with your child!

Gardening on Our Balcony

This child will grow up hearing a lot of music! Joanna plays piano and guitar to relax. When she's not playing music, she's listening to everything from Cam to Selena. She loves to figure skate and hopes to introduce this child to figure skating or hockey. Joanna also likes to trace her family history. She and her grandmother researched their family back to her 8th great-grandfather in 1725. She enjoys being the family 'storyteller' - a role she looks forward to passing on to this child. There are so many memories and stories we look forward to creating as a family.

Cultural Diversity

We're excited about possibly having a multi-cultural family through adoption. We've seen first-hand that there is so much that we can learn from those who have a different life experience than we do. The world is a diverse place and we feel it's important that our family reflect that.

Josh is from a Jewish family and Joanna is from a German family. We quickly learned that bringing together different cultures into one family came with unexpected but absolutely worthwhile challenges and surprises. We settled in a community that respects, embraces and encourages diversity and we enjoy sharing in our neighbors' different cultures. Joanna lived in Spain and hopes to share some of the Spanish culture and language with this child as well.

As curious people who enjoy learning about all aspects of other cultures, including holidays, music, stories, traditions, food, language and art, we're thrilled at the possibility of sharing the experience of learning about a child's background. No matter their heritage, we will teach them that our differences are what make us interesting, fun and special but that they are always worthy of love and respect.

Education We will Provide

We Can't Wait to be Parents!

Screenwriter and actor Simon Pegg said that "being a geek is never having to play it cool about how much you like something." We're proud to be geeks. We want to teach this child to be their authentic self, to like who they are. We will nurture and encourage this child's passions and talents, no matter what they are. We want this child to grow up comfortable and confident in who they are.

Education goes far beyond school to us. We want to raise a child who will understand that they are part of a community; someone who will be the kind of person who will sit down with the boy or girl sitting alone at lunch. This starts by showing kindness, love, acceptance, forgiveness and understanding to them, and to you, always.

We will give this child everything they need--but not everything that they want. For us, part of being happy in the moment is learning to recognize the joy in what is around us, and making the best of what we have. We want to help this naturally curious, happy child grow to be a resilient, authentic and happy adult.

And if they're destined to grow up to be a Nobel prize-winning, planet-saving, cancer-curing superhero, we'll do everything we can to make that happen, too.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

Our condominium is surrounded by seven beautiful acres. Even on the edge of a city we're lucky to be near a pond and so much wildlife. One morning we woke up to see an albino squirrel peeking into our window! Our 'backyard' is the campus where Joanna works, with its 300 acres of trails, butterfly meadow, dog park, playground and gardens. In the summer we enjoy taking our bikes on the bike trails. We can't wait to teach a child how to ride a bike and hope to be out there on the trail with a little one soon.

One of our favorite things about our town is that it has a very small-town feel. We can walk to everything. We've enjoyed getting to know the people who own the stores in our neighborhood over the seven years we've lived here.

Our condo is large and sunny with plenty of space for a child to grow up and run around. We'll often meet up with neighbors and their kids and dogs in the large park behind our community. Josh will fly his kites there and sometimes Joanna will just lie in the grass and read a book, listen to music, or chat with our neighbors. This is our forever home.

Our Extended Families

Josh's Family

We're the first in our family to start a family, so everyone is incredibly excited about this child. Our families live ten minutes apart from each other in Philadelphia. This is just a couple hours away so we see our families often, especially for all of the holidays (and there are a lot between the two of us!)

Joanna's parents are retired and enjoy museums. They're looking forward to exploring the Smithsonian with a baby, the way they did with Joanna. Her aunt and uncle live a short drive away and look forward to teaching this little one to sail when they're older.

Joanna with Her Aunts and Uncle

Josh's younger brother and sister are twins. His sister and her fiancé live in St. Louis with their three rescue dogs. We're looking forward to camping with them and our family. His brother lives in California but he and Josh stay connected by playing video games every week.

Our friends are family to us! We spend weekends cooking, skiing, taking road trips, celebrating holidays and even just running errands with them. Some of our friends are starting to have their own families now, so your child will have instant playmates.

There may not be a lot of us in our family, but that's exactly why everyone is so excited about this baby. That's why they're excited about you.

From Us to You

There is no way we can know what you are going through but one thing we can say is that we want to know you better. We want you to know how very excited we are to be adopting, and how exited we are about raising a child. We hope this letter can provide a glimpse into our lives and the life your child will have with us.

We met 25 years ago on the school bus in third grade. Joanna immediately had a crush on Josh, but he didn't notice her at all (because girls had cooties!). It wasn't until after college, fourteen years later, that we started dating. We dated long distance for four years, calling each other every day, visiting each other as much as possible and learning how to maintain a strong relationship over a long distance. We're looking forward to celebrating our seventh wedding anniversary this year.

We're quirky, geeky people who love keeping busy. Our favorite things to do together are always physical activities. We walk or bike everywhere, and swim or ski together when the weather cooperates. Where we live is a great city for us to explore with children on foot or by bike, and there's always so much to explore in the museums and parks nearby. We love where we live!

We also look forward to sharing our rainy-day activities with a child. On one of those bad-weather days Josh will build an arcade game, a robot, or work on a woodworking project. Joanna will find her guitar and learn yet another Taylor Swift song to annoy Josh with! We look forward to sharing our pastimes with this child and discovering and nurturing their interests.

We both like to cook. Josh's specialty is homemade pizza, and Joanna got him the Star Trek Enterprise pizza cutter so we could be geeks even when cooking. Joanna bakes all kinds of things, and especially likes decorating cakes. We are excited to have a young one 'helping' us in the kitchen. Teaching them to cook will be a joy, even when they're covered in frosting!

When we can, our vacations usually involve the water. Our first priority when going to any new city is finding the river, lake or ocean close by and walking along the water. Some of our best weekends have been driving to a nearby city and simply walking along the harbor there. During the summer we swim nearly every day at the local pool. We want this child to be just as comfortable in and near the water, and there's a children's wading pool that we're looking forward to using to teach this child to swim.

We're both curious, inquisitive people who want to pass those qualities on to the next generation. We want to raise a child with the knowledge and ability to be anything they want to be. Our joint love of nearly anything science-related, our deep respect for artistic talent and interest, and our drive to be physically active will allow us to support a child in whatever endeavors they choose.

To us, an involved birth family means more people who love the child and that can only ever be a good thing. Before this child can even understand, we will be speaking to them positively, openly and honestly about you and about being adopted. We will send you pictures and letters of their life, and we are open to exchanging emails, phone calls, and possibly visits with you.

Above all, we want to raise the child with the knowledge that they are loved by us and by you.
