Adoption in Our Lives

A Trip to the Park

Adoption has been a central part of our lives throughout our relationship, and it has been written on our hearts since our first discussions about having a family. Right before we were married, Greg’s brother and sister-in-law adopted our nephew from Guatemala. Being involved in his life has helped us learn about the preparation and care that goes into welcoming a child from another race and culture into a family. A few years later, Sarah’s family was expanded to include our brother-in-law, who’s taught us so much about growing up in a biracial family from the perspective of an African American adult. These incredible people constantly remind us that God makes families in so many ways.

When having children biologically wasn’t an option for us, we knew that we would have the love and support of our families when we committed to starting our own family through adoption. We have been so blessed to become an adoptive family. Our daughter, Shaniah, is a caring and hilarious little girl who is excited to become a big sister someday! Her energy and unique personality have made our family life more fulfilling and fun than we could have ever imagined. Since the day Shaniah came home with us, we’ve talked about how special our family is because of how God brought us together, and we love to share our experience with others exploring adoption for themselves.

Our Life Priorities

Addressing Cultural Diversity

In the Park

Admittedly, we may be a different race or ethnicity than you, live in a different region, or speak a different language. We want to assure you that we will work to educate ourselves and our support system about your child’s race and heritage, and to honestly and openly discuss these things with your child.

Raising a daughter of a different race has blessed us with new experiences and a broader perspective. When she was a toddler, we worked to educate ourselves on things like skin and hair care. Sarah spent hours researching how best to maintain Shaniah’s hair by visiting salons and attending hair care and braiding classes. We joined a local transracial adoption group to connect with other multiracial families. We’ve constantly worked to educate ourselves and our support system on real-world issues and their effects on different races and ethnicities.

As our daughter has grown older, we’ve worked hard to answer her questions and encourage her to be proud of her race and heritage. We spend lots of time discussing the ways that each member of our family is unique and special. We seek out playmates, activities, and mentors for her so that she can have many relationships with people who share her race. Since both sides of our family have been made more culturally diverse through adoption, our family members are also amazing mentors for us.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

Our suburban community is filled with older homes with lots of character built closely together in a city-style neighborhood. The sidewalks and close layout bring a community feel, and our street is especially known throughout town for being welcoming and fun. Families of all ages live close by, from young professionals with children to retired couples. Neighbors take turns hosting summer picnics and holiday parties, and help each other with chores and childcare.

A short walk from our home are some of our favorite restaurants, shops, parks, and our church. Children can walk to the schools, which are always among the top in Pennsylvania. Our community will offer your child a safe place to meet new friends, learn, and explore.

Our red brick home is bright and cozy, with a wonderful backyard. We love using the space to host picnics, garden, play, and have bonfires with s’mores! In nice weather, we enjoy meals on our porch, which overlooks the neighborhoods in the nearby valley. We sit on the porch as a family to watch sunsets and storms in the distance and catch up with each other or with friends.

Our home is made most special by the many family members and close friends within a 15 minute drive. We’re blessed to have a tremendous support system nearby, with people popping over to lend a hand or just take a walk around the block. Your child will be warmly welcomed, cared for, and loved by this amazing crew!

Our Extended Families

Greg's Family

Greg is the youngest of three boys, and we love spending time with their families and Greg’s parents - Pappap and Grandma love having a full house! Our visits are centered around big family meals, particularly holiday dinners and early morning breakfasts. Greg’s mom loves baking with her three grandkids. Our niece and nephew adore spending time with their cousin, Shaniah, and with our dog, Penny. We often have sleepovers when everyone is in town so they can spend extra time playing together!

Sarah's Family

Sarah is the oldest of three siblings, and she and her brother and sister are very close. We recently got to welcome our new nephew into Sarah’s family, and Shaniah loves being the big cousin! Sarah’s family loves being active together, especially walking, hiking, or playing catch. At the end of a fun-filled day, our favorite activities include playing board games or unwinding at the local ice cream shop.

Together, our favorite yearly tradition is hosting Thanksgiving for both families, including aunts, uncles, and cousins. It’s been exciting to add new members over the years and watch everyone enjoy each other’s company. Adding a new baby to join our celebrations will make everyone so happy!

From Us to You

Thank you so much for considering adoption, and for taking the time to learn about our family. We are so thankful for your strength, your courage, and the love you have for your child. Please know that, no matter what path or family you choose, you are surrounded by the love and prayers of so many current and hopeful adoptive families. We hope this glimpse into our life helps convey our promises to you for your child and answers some of your questions.

We met in 2005 while working in the same research lab during college. Our advisor asked Greg to find Sarah some projects on her first day, but he was so nervous after being introduced that he sent her home instead. Thankfully, the jitters subsided and we became fast friends. As we talked, we found we shared the same sense of humor, life dreams and priorities, love of family, and faith in God. By the end of the summer, we went from being inseparable friends to a couple, and have loved growing our life together ever since.

Over the years, we’ve enjoyed developing successful careers in biotechnology, and have found hobbies that we love doing together, including hiking, cooking, and updating our home. We’ve constantly worked to deepen our faith in God and our relationships with our friends and family, and we love to make each other laugh every day.

We always felt that adoption would be part of our plan someday. We spent several years navigating through the hardships of infertility, but ultimately found that supporting each other through the struggles and frustrations strengthened our relationships with each other and with God. So two years ago, we decided to expand our family and adopted our daughter, Shaniah. The love that has grown in our hearts for Shaniah as we’ve watched her grow up and have experienced coming together as a family continues to be God’s greatest gift to us. As we pursue adoption again today, we know that our growth through these experiences will help us make a loving and compassionate home for another child.

We promise to give the very best life we can to your child and to include your dreams for them into their upbringing, too. We will show them every day that they are deeply loved and cared for. As they grow, we will teach them to respect, understand, and care for everyone around them, and to do everything they can for those in need. We will encourage them to make good decisions and guide them to continuously grow in their faith and love of God. We will foster their creativity, prioritize education, and help them build the confidence they need to explore their interests and succeed at their dreams.

We can’t wait to welcome another child into our family and help them grow and become who they are meant to be, and we would love to share their life with you through pictures and letters. We strongly believe that adoption is something to celebrate openly and proudly from the very beginning of a child's life. This child will never remember a day when they did not know their adoption story or what a gift adoption is to our family. We also promise that they will always know how selfless you are and what tremendous love you have for them.

We pray that God grants you peace, good health, and all of the support and love that you need.

Sincerely,

Greg & Sarah
