Cory & Angel

Family oriented, fun-loving, supportive and open minded are some of the traits that make our family and our home warm and welcoming. We appreciate you taking the time to read a little about our story and considering the values our family has to share. We are devoted to one another, committed to our roles as parents, and excited about growing our family.

Adoption in Our Lives

A Stroll Along Boston Harbor

Both of us were raised in blended families, Angel with a stepfather and Cory with an adopted father. Cory was primarily raised by his biological mom and her husband, who adopted him at age 12. His father had an older daughter who Cory considers his sister, and they remain close today. Angel was also raised by a stepfather and has a younger brother and two younger (twin) sisters from her parent's second marriage.

The saying of "blood is thicker than water" was completely irrelevant and patently untrue for both of us growing up. We had half and step siblings that we never considered anything other than our full brothers and sisters, as well as "aunts" and "uncles" biological and otherwise.

Growing up with a blended family helped us appreciate diversity, learn new cultures, adopt new traditions, and expanded our circle of family and friends.

Our Daughter, Elle

We are blessed with a beautiful daughter, Elle Autumn. Elle is a miracle baby, as she was born with a number of medical challenges and continues to amaze us as she reaches developmental milestones. We live to hear her laugh and see her smile, work hard to provide her with the resources she needs to excel, and continually evolve our parenting style to ensure we balance love and support with responsibility and accountability. Elle is a technology wiz, but she also loves outdoors including the beach, pool, and the neighborhood playground. She is an excellent traveler, and already has several stamps in her passport book! Although she is an active little girl, she also enjoys a quiet evening on the front porch listening to the waves with Mom and Dad.

    Our House and Neighborhood

    Our Home

Imagine a neighborhood where all of the homes are uniquely designed, nature prevails, you don't have to lock your doors, your neighbors are friendly, you can hear the sound of waves crashing, and the beach is only a short walk away. That is where we live! We absolutely love our home, which was built in a former ski community. We are nestled on sand dunes, with a partial view of the lake, in a house that we renovated to fit our family needs (including the arrival of a new family member!). There are two parks for children, basketball and tennis courts, a soccer field, and dozens of hiking trails, as well as a semi-private community beach.

We bought the "ugliest" house in the neighborhood and over the past two years, turned it into a nautical oasis. We now have neighbors stop us to complement the house, which is uniquely designed for us. There are starfish in every window, seashells in every room, and live plants throughout to promote a healthy environment and create a calming presence.

    Our Extended Families

    With Angel's Family

Even with our family dispersed throughout the US, we have a close-knit and loving relationship with our immediate and extended families. Angel has family across the East Coast, including her twin sisters who are in college, her brother who lives on a houseboat in the Carolinas, and her mom who lives near the ocean in Florida. Angel's mom instilled her love for the beach in her children, who all appreciate having their feet in the sand and enjoy all bodies of water - from lakes, oceans, to the seas. Cory's family has roots throughout the Midwest, including his mom, sister, and father who all live within a short driving distance.

Cory With His Sister & Niece

Having family throughout the US gives us a reason to travel, which is our favorite family activity. This geographic dispersion also makes us unique as we both have different perspectives based on the geography, socioeconomic, political, and cultural variations that helped form our personalities and now makes us more open-minded to other points of view.

Our families are tremendously supportive of our adoption journey, and have committed to provide support throughout the process.

    From Us to You

Our hope with this letter is to convey our gratitude for your willingness to consider our family as well as create a vision of the life we will provide for our children.

We have built a successful life through hard work and determination, have a beautiful home, and a happy, loving marriage. What is missing from our lives is the family we've always dreamed of. We were blessed to have a daughter, Elle Autumn, five years ago. For the past five years, we've talked about our desire to have more children. Due to our own experience with adoption and blended families, we decided that adoption would be an incredible path to growing our little family.

A little about us ... we were married in 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa while we were volunteering. Cory is a Union ironworker, and serves as an elected official on the Executive Board of his Union. Cory is an amazing father with an endless supply of patience and a playful, adventurous spirit. Angel is an attorney by trade, and is responsible for regulatory compliance at a mid-sized bank. Like her profession, she takes her job as a mom very seriously, ensuring Elle wants for nothing.

Neither of us were born into privilege, but have worked very hard throughout our careers to get where we are today. We have also worked hard to find a good work/life balance, ensuring we reserve time for family, friends and our community. We hope to instill that same sense of purpose in our children, providing them with the education, support, and unconditional love needed to live a fulfilling, happy and healthy life and pursue their passions, whatever they may be.

We both have wanderlust in our hearts, and look forward to sharing our deep love of travel with our children. There is nothing we'd rather do on our free time then sink our feet into the sand! We haven't been to a beach we don't love - and we've been to a lot of them all across the world. From our beach at home on Lake Michigan to our travel spots in Mexico, France, South Africa, the Caribbean, and all across the United States, we can't wait to build sand castles, watch our children chase seagulls, and hear their squeals of laughter and pure joy as they run away from the lapping waves.

We are very proud parents, delighting in milestones big and small, photographing many of our family memories, and savoring the little moments. We would love to share with you, to the extent you desire, these priceless moments, whether through photographs, stories, or keepsakes. We also want to share your child's culture and heritage with them so they feel complete, understanding their roots and embracing their background. We've always loved the phrase - "it takes a village to raise a child" and believe that the more people that love a child, the better off they will be in life.

We are humbled by your strength and courage, and our thoughts are with you as you consider the options available to you and your child. While we can't even begin to imagine the range of emotions you are experiencing, we hope we can provide some words of comfort and perhaps create an image that helps you feel hopeful about the future.
