Mike & Katy
We are a caring and open-minded couple who have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a special child to make our family complete! We have so much love to share and it would be such a gift to be given the opportunity to be parents through adoption. We are so thankful that you are reading our profile and would be thrilled to continue our adoption journey with you if you choose us as parents for your child.
Why We Chose Adoption
About 1 year into our marriage, we started trying to have a child, but it seemed to be taking longer than it should have. We pursued fertility treatments, holistic medicine practices and crossed our fingers, but nothing seemed to be working. Although this process was disappointing, when stepping back, we realized that having a biological child was not the most important thing to us, but rather having the experience of parenting and loving a child was most important!
We both considered adoption to build a family before knowing one another, so this route became a natural choice. Furthermore, Mike’s cousin recently adopted a foster child and friends of ours have had positive adoption experiences. Adoption just felt like the right fit for us.
If selected, we look forward to working with you and supporting you through the adoption journey. We also look forward to being good parents to your child, supporting his or her genuine growth as well as honoring you and openly discussing adoption.
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Our favorite vacation spot is Wrightsville Beach. It is a small beach town in North Carolina where we like to get away from life’s stresses to relax and spend quality time with one another. Our favorite place to stay is right on the beach with large glass doors and balcony facing the ocean. This location is great for taking a jog on the beach in the morning, having brunch on the pier next door and spending the day on the beach soaking up the sun and cooling off in the ocean. In the evenings, we enjoy going into nearby Wilmington to have a good meal, explore the historic downtown, and visit one of our favorite ice cream parlors where chocolate and peanut butter is a winning combination. We look forward to having a child to share one of our favorite places and make new memories together.
We have a racially and ethnically diverse set of friends, neighbors and community. When it comes to raising a child, we will seek to address cultural diversity in our home by modeling our own relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and also traveling and cooking foods from a variety of traditions. We believe that living by example is fundamental to teaching children about valuing and respecting others. We have also intentionally chosen to live in an ethnically and racially diverse area, close to downtown (although still in a quiet neighborhood) where people from a broad array of backgrounds live close together and are in community with one another.
Although our biological family is Caucasian, our cousins have recently adopted a little girl who is biracial (Caucasian and African American). If your child happens to be of a different racial/ethnic background from our own, we intend to talk openly about those differences and make sure your child has mentoring/guidance from individuals who are the same background to aid in racial/ethnic identity development.
Our House and Neighborhood
Our neighborhood is close to the city, while also offering a peaceful place to retreat. Many young families with children reside here because of its balance of good schools and jobs, affordability and desirable homes. The neighborhood has an annual summer BBQ and Halloween parties that are particularly enjoyable for kids. Children and adults regularly walk, run and play on the streets and at the local park. We especially enjoy walking down to the park and playing with our nephew or friend’s children as well as swimming at a nearby pool.
We live in brick, ranch-style house on a quiet street with tall oak and pine trees. In the warmer months, the trees offer relief from the hot sun and help to keep our yard cooler. Our house has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living, dining, kitchen, sunroom and library. We also have a large deck in the back that leads to a wooded back yard. Our favorite room in the house is the corner living room. It gets gentle sunlight during the day and has a fireplace for warming up around the couch and watching a movie at night.
Our Extended Families
We feel fortunate to have both sets of our parents living close by. We like to get together, at least on a weekly basis, to share meals or do activities together. When the weather is nice, we like to get outside and take walks or go to local parks where we can spend time and hike. We love the ocean and often like to go to the beach, which is only 2 hours from our house, for a day or weekend trip. We also like to get together with Mike’s extended family members who live out of state, at least once or twice per year so we can keep connections with uncles, cousins and their children. Everyone likes to play games together, watch movies, and generally just catch up on each other’s lives.
We also consider our close friends, both near and far, to be part of our extended family. Our friends have been a tremendous support to us and we love to spend time with them and their children on the weekends. We like to go to local restaurants, museums, the farmer’s market, ride our bikes and play games. We consider our broader community, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship where we attend services, to be part of our family as well. They provide a loving and supportive environment where we can reconnect and reflect on what really matters to us: family, loving others, and giving back to our community.
From Us to You
Hello. We want to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves and to thank you for reading our profile. We can imagine you may be having a range of emotions right now and admire your strength and courage. If selected, we would be honored to have the opportunity to work with you on your adoption plan. We would feel ecstatic and blessed to show your child all the love we have in our hearts.
We have been together for almost 14 years and married for 5 of those years. Although when we met, it was “love at first sight,” we took our time getting to know one another while pursuing our careers and education prior to getting married. With so much time getting to know each other, our marriage is built upon a firm foundation of mutual trust, admiration, respect and love. It is truly amazing how much we grow to love each other more each year.
We began trying to conceive a child shortly after we were married, but it soon became clear it was going to be a difficult path for us. Although it was disappointing at first, adopting a child quickly became an option, as it had been something each of us considered individually before knowing one another. We realized that having a biological child was not most important to us, but rather, what was most important was having the experience of parenting and loving a child.
We are fully set up and prepared to welcome a child into our lives. We live in a lovely, quiet neighborhood with many families who have young children. Our home is large enough for a growing family with plenty of room to run around outside in the yard. Our careers are in stable places and even allow some flexibility with work schedules. Katy plans to begin working part-time in order to spend more time at home with a child. Mike’s workplace is just 10 minutes away from home and sometimes he works from home.
We value family time on a routine basis, including travel, fun activities on weekends and holidays as well as eating meals and relaxing together most evenings during the workweek. Re-connecting with one another after our workday, even if we are very busy, is a priority to us. We look forward to sharing that quality family time with a child!
We believe in the motto “it takes a village to raise a child” and therefore look forward to introducing a child to the loving friends and family who have been supportive and excited about our journey to adopt. We also look forward to honoring you by talking openly with your child about you and keeping communication open by sending letters and photographs.
With every passing year, our desire to parent a child grows. We are filled with love to share with a child and cannot wait to have the opportunity to be parents. We have gained wisdom from our life experience and education and feel emotionally and financially prepared to be the best parents we can be. We would be honored to have the chance to be parents to your child, to guide, love, and show him or her all about the world.
We thank you again for taking the time to read our profile and wish you all the best on your journey.
