Our Adventures

The Day We Met in Switzerland

We love to travel! In fact, we met in Switzerland. Sarah Jane was a live-in nanny for a family there. Jameel was visiting a friend who introduced him to Sarah Jane. We spent three wonderful days skiing together (nope, Sarah Jane didn't fall a single time, who told you that?), we kept in touch, and eventually turned a long distance romance into a wonderful life together.

Jameel works as a doctor primarily in our hometown, but travels several times a year to work in medical clinics in Cambodia and other countries. Sarah Jane has been fortunate to travel with him on some of those trips, and we have established a close group of friends we look forward to one day sharing with our child. It is a beautiful culture, and one that has taught us gratitude, strength, forgiveness, and the value of community.

We have been fortunate to travel around Southeast Asia and Europe together, as well as Morocco, Costa Rica, and many of the states here at home. We love experiencing different cultures, food and landscapes. We can't wait to explore the world with our child!

We are very excited to learn about and visit whatever part of the country our child is born in. We want them to get to know that region to promote their sense of self identity.

Our Leisure Time

Our Idea of a Day Well Spent

Our idea of a perfect weekend with the child we hope to adopt (Once they are walking, talking, and dancing that is....)

Saturday: Farmers market to buy fresh corn, any vegetables a kiddo will eat, something to grill, and donuts (yep, they're the best.) Head home, play in the yard and take Barley for a walk. Naptime! Head to the lake with the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Boat around the lake, take a dip in the water, and enjoy a sunset picnic on the boat.

Sunday: Meeting the neighbors at the park for playtime. Uh-oh, Barley's on the slide! Invite a neighbor over for arts and crafts. Naptime! Next, a bike ride. We ride bikes to the nearby lakes and have a picnic lunch and watch the sailboats. Back at home, we have a relaxing family night grilling in the back yard and listening to music. Nighttime stories, then lights out on the perfect weekend.

Cultural Diversity

Dressing Up for an Indian Party

We want to honor and pay respect to whatever cultural background you and/or your child's father come from. We are committed to learning as a family what makes your culture unique. We will take language classes if you have a different native tongue, and attend classes on interracial adoption. We will explore the food, music, history, popular culture, and social movements of your background. While we look forward to celebrating the beauty of your cultural background, we know that some children growing up in America unfortunately face prejudice. Together, we will fight this as a family, and work to make sure our child's community is welcoming and abundant with opportunity. We will always encourage our child to make friends and mentors from your culture. In doing so we hope to instill in them a strong sense of self identity.

Jameel comes from a diverse background. His mother is of Indian descent, but was born and grew up in East Africa. His Father was born in America and is white. Growing up with a connection to each of these cultures gave him an appreciation for people from different races, languages and religions. With a niece adopted from China, his family proves that families are rooted in shared experiences and connections, not in a shared skin color.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Forever Home

We feel so fortunate to have a home with a storybook feeling right across the street from a great school. Our home has 4 bedrooms, a sunroom we enjoy reading in, a cozy room for evening fires, and a great playroom. In the summer, we enjoy the large backyard with a vegetable garden, the sports fields at the school, and the walking/bike trail just feet from our front door. We look forward to walking with our child in the peaceful neighborhood and teaching them to ride bikes here.

Our neighborhood is active with many young families. The kids in the neighborhood know each other and visit each others' homes for activities and just hanging out. There are outdoor movie nights and pool parties in the summer. Every winter the neighborhood park becomes an ice skating rink, and Santa visits for the annual neighborhood holiday parade.

Minnesota is home to the best schools in the country and has a diverse population rich in culture. We think it has the perfect blend of natural green space and the excitement and opportunities of a lively city.

Our Extended Families

With Our Nieces

Family has always been a very important part of both of our lives. We both come from big families, and are very close to our parents and siblings.

Family Reunion at the Beach

Jameel's family lives nearby, so we see them frequently. Our family loves to cook, (and loves to eat!), so gatherings often revolve around a meal. We are a multicultural family, with ties to East Africa and India, so the food is always exciting! There is no shortage of laughter when the whole family gets together. We have 3 nieces who live close by and spending time with them is always so fun! Going to the lake, discovering new activities, and attending their games/recitals/birthday parties brings us great joy. Our family has been touched by adoption, as one of our nieces was adopted. She is proud of her adoption story and eager to welcome an adopted cousin into the family!

Though Sarah Jane's family doesn't live as close physically, they are very close at heart! One of our favorite traditions is our annual family reunion at the beach. All of our aunts, uncles, cousins, and all the kids go to the beach for a week. We swim, build sandcastles, eat yummy food, play games, and spend lots of time making each other laugh. Sarah Jane grew up with lots of cousins, and we are excited for our child to experience those special relationships too. There are adopted cousins in her family as well!

From Us to You

We are Sarah Jane and Jameel, and we want to thank you for taking the time to get to know us.

Whatever life circumstances have brought you to the possibility of adoption, we appreciate that this is an enormous decision and one that is made out of love and a selfless desire for your child to have a wonderful life. First and foremost, we want you to know that if you choose us to raise your child, we will always speak of you respectfully and lovingly. Your selflessness and sacrifice in placing this child for adoption will always be spoken of as brave and thoughtful. We will work to make sure your child knows that you chose adoption out of love.

For us, this would be an invaluable gift. We will love your child unconditionally and never give them reason to doubt that.

As difficult as it is for us to talk about ourselves, here we are! We met ten years ago, and despite the initial long distance relationship, have been closely connected ever since that first day. We are best friends and devoted partners. We've been fortunate to have a marriage full of adventures that have allowed us to explore and experience the world together and with our wonderful dog Barley. While our relationship has been easy for us, our desire to start a family has turned out to be more difficult than we had hoped. We have longed for a child for years but were unable to achieve pregnancy. Throughout our relationship, even before we tried to get pregnant, we have talked about adoption. We have a number of family and friends who have adopted, and we've seen first-hand how adoption can change lives. As we learned that we cannot have a child the natural way, moving to adoption felt like an obvious next step, and we couldn't be more excited.

Jameel's sister adopted her daughter years ago. She is a wonderful kid: smart, fun, talented, and kind. She is very proud of her adoption story and loves her unique family! We want to give a child a similar experience, and pride in their adoption story.

We look forward to sharing updates with you through emails and photos. Depending on your desires, we would love to arrange one or possibly more visit(s) in person. We very much want our child to understand and appreciate how important you are in their life.

We are not perfect, but we will do everything we possibly can to give our child the best and brightest future they can have. We have so much love to give, and we cannot wait to share that with our child. Sarah Jane's patience, compassion and creativity will make her a fantastic mother; similarly, Jameel's calm-under-pressure demeanor, love of learning and passion for sharing knowledge will make him a great father. Barley also can't wait to have a new cuddle-buddy.

We will always try to prioritize the needs of our child over our own desires. The trust placed in us as adoptive parents is tremendous, and will not be taken for granted. We will raise them with the values we hold dear: kindness, compassion, respect, gratitude, and humility. As they grow, we hope to instill in them a strong self identity, a sense of adventure, a thirst for knowledge, and a desire to use their unique gifts to make the world a better place.

We are so thankful for the possibilities adoption has offered us, and the chance to build a family that loves each other to the moon and back. You are a critical part of that family relationship and we are so very grateful to you for even considering us. As you think of the future, please know that we are hoping for the very best for both you and your child, whatever that may be.

With tremendous love and respect,

Jameel & Sarah Jane
