Stephen & Leslie
We are excited to become parents and grow our family through adoption. We are a fun-loving and nurturing couple with so much love and support to give. We've always pictured our lives with a child and are so appreciative that you are taking the time to read our profile. We would be blessed if you chose us to be your child's parents.
What Makes Us Unique
We are blessed that Stephen will be able to be a stay-at-home dad for our child. We are so excited for this opportunity and to be able to provide that level of care and attention to our future child. We see this as something that will provide a great foundation for learning and development. From changing diapers to nature walks and story times, to play-dates and playground adventures, Stephen is super excited for all of the aspects of parenting.
Stephen has always loved being an Uncle to his nephews, a "God-daddy" to his godchildren. He enjoys working on building projects and massive Lego constructions and cannot wait to create more of the same memories as a father.
Leslie is passionate about her work, and has grown and developed in the same company for the past 17 years. She works very close to home and has a flexible schedule that provides a really good work life balance. She's very comforted by the fact that Stephen will be able to care for our future child full time at home.
A typical week for us looks like Leslie working out in a strength training or yoga class after work with Stephen spending time keeping the house and yard up, stocking the kitchen/pantry, and taking on handyman work in between.
On the weekends, we enjoy catching a movie or a bite to eat with friends, bike riding on local trails, and planning and working on our next home project like refurbishing furniture. The weekend is also the time where we enjoy brunch at home and when Leslie makes up home cooked meals for the week ahead.
We also have a passion for travelling, enjoying long road trips listening to audio-books on our way to visit family and friends, or to escape away to the beach or mountains. We like a blend of adventure and downtime, loving being active but also enjoy rest and relaxation in quiet places to refresh and renew.
How We Met
We met on a white water rafting trip in 2008 in West Virginia. Stephen was living in Kentucky at the time and Leslie in North Carolina. Leslie was with her friends unpacking their gear for the weekend at the campsite when Stephen and his friends pulled up to the neighboring site. Stephen and his crew began unpacking and we introduced ourselves. We immediately sensed a connection and were able to get to know one another more the following night after we returned from our rafting trips.
Stephen built a big bonfire that became the envy of the entire campground that night. We talked all night at the campfire and really enjoyed each other's company. We exchanged numbers the next day and began to date long distance. Over the next year and a half we would meet each other for outdoor adventures like camping, mountain bike riding, canoeing, and skiing. In 2010, Stephen moved to North Carolina and we spent the next year growing closer, going to concerts, and taking trips to the mountains and beach. Stephen surprised Leslie by proposing when we were visiting her family that Christmas and we were married the following October on the anniversary of when we met.
Our House and Neighborhood
Our medium-sized home has an open layout that is flooded with natural light from its many windows and is in a wooded lot with many tall trees and flowering bushes. It is cozy and bright and feels like a secret garden retreat nestled in between the year-round flowering front yard filled with birds and butterflies and our tree lined backyard. We have lots of space to relax on our deck and to run around in the grass.
Our neighborhood is filled with families of all ages with children ranging from infants to teenagers. We live a short walk from a historic golf course that is very peaceful and relaxing to explore. Our local YMCA is a short drive away and there is a large playground, picnic area, and Olympic size swimming pool there.
Our neighbors get together every few months for either a block party complete with bouncy house and face painting for the kids or a pot luck style BBQ picnic. The area we live in hosts many cultural events as well, celebrating the diverse social and racial heritage of our community. We enjoy attending the street festivals and culinary events with hundreds of food trucks in one of our many local parks. We also like spending time at our life and science museum. It is great to be outdoors and have a place close by that we can see wildlife in natural habitats.
Our Extended Families
Our families are spread out across the U.S. and we spend time traveling to see them over holidays or for reunions. We love being able to host our family at our home when they come to visit us and really enjoy our time together. Family is so important to us that when we were planning our wedding we displayed our family tree on a large canvas Leslie designed for everyone to see. It was so very special! Since we grew up in different states our families were able to learn more about each other and our shared histories.
Christmas is a time that is very special to us. We love to spend it with our families. This past year, we spent it with Leslie's family and had so much fun playing with our 2½ year old nephew and his new toys, especially the basketball hoop and trucks.
While our families aren't in the same state we do have many close friends nearby who serve as our local family. We play the role of Auntie and Uncle to our friends' children, and spend time on the weekends at the kids' basketball games, jump-rope competitions, and musicals. It means so much to us to play an active and supportive role in their lives. Being with them fills us with so much joy.
Our families and friends are very supportive of us adopting and are super excited to see us become parents because they know how much it means to us.
From Us to You
This is by far the most important letter we have ever written. There are so many things we want to say to you. First and foremost, thank you for choosing adoption. Secondly, we have no idea the journey you have been on, or the strength it takes to make the decision you are faced with, but please know, we immensely respect you and your courage. We also want you to know that we are so excited to become parents. Together, we have always pictured our lives with children in them and would be honored if you could see your child being parented by us.
We have been together for over ten years and married for seven. Though our attempts to create our family biologically were not successful, we knew that would not stop us from achieving our greatest desire, having a family of our own. We believe that family is the greatest treasure.
Life has challenged us more than we had ever expected, but we have grown closer and stronger because of it. Someone once wrote "Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain." We feel like that is how we have approached our life's challenges and the grace with which we have grown from them. Even through the tough times, we double down on our love for each other and lean into our abilities to find the humor in situations. We think that these are qualities that will help us to become great parents.
We would be incredibly blessed if you chose us to parent your child, and thank you for the opportunity to grow our family through yours. We will raise them to be good people, challenging them to be their best, as they challenge us to be the best parents and people, that we can be. We will teach them respect for all living things, from the smallest ant to the largest tree, that there is so much we can learn from each other, by listening, appreciating, and caring. We want you to know that we will surround your child with love, respect, care, and devotion for their entire lives.
Our friends and family are excited for the hope and joy a child will bring us and cannot wait to meet them and welcome them home. We have so much love and support to give, and truly enjoy being around our nephews, godchildren, and friends' children. We love how curious the children in our lives are, and love exploring the world through their eyes, and helping to shape the people they are and will become. We look forward to creating so many memories with our child and look forward to bringing them into our loving community.
Thank you very much for considering us as potential parents for your child and if you do choose us, we look forward to letting them know how strong and courageous you were to bless us with the responsibility of raising them. Please know that we have the utmost respect for you, and that your child will know how much he or she is loved by you. We also want you to know that we will send you letters and pictures so you can see them grow and get to know the person he or she is becoming. Thank you for taking the time to read our profile and helping our dreams come true.
