Adoption in Our Lives

Korey and Her Sister

Both of us have family members and friends who are adopted. Jared’s younger cousin is adopted, and his aunt and uncle have been very supportive and understanding during our adoption journey. Korey’s sister is adopted, and she has also provided helpful advice and insight. One of Korey’s fond childhood memories is rushing to the hospital with her parents to meet her newborn baby sister! Having friends and family who are also adopted will be helpful for advice and guidance throughout our child’s life.

What’s different about this adoption compared to the majority of our friends and family who are adopted is that this will be an open adoption. This means that there will be no secrets. Your child will always know their birth family and background. These feelings and our desire to keep things open has been discussed with our friends and family who are adopted, and they have been very helpful in relating and agreeing to the importance of openness. Adoption is an absolute gift and we will never forget how brave you are and how lucky we feel to be chosen to parent your child. We promise to always show respect to you and your courageous decision.

Fun Facts About Us

We Love Music

1. Korey speaks 3 languages- English, French and Hausa.

2. Jared went to college on a track scholarship. He ran a 4:24 min. mile.

3. Korey once committed herself to a 3-month vegan challenge- where she learned that she never wants to live without cheese.

4. Jared once had a pet cow named Alfred.

5. Korey used to read The Guinness Book of records, attempting many different records as a kid, and still dreams to be listed in it someday.

6. Jared can fix anything in the house, unless it calls for crawling under or on top of the house and then he’s out.

7. We believe in the healing power of music and love to turn up the music to dance out any of the day’s stresses.

8. Jared was raised on a farm and his green thumb knowledge has helped us grow our successful backyard garden.

9. Korey’s family has secret recipes that have been passed down, including those from her great grandmother who worked with Russell Stover’s.

10. Jared helped to create a charity fundraiser for cancer research, which involved a race on the children’s toy, Big Wheels. He’s obviously still very much a kid at heart.

Cultural Diversity

When we decided upon adoption, we knew from the beginning that we would love this child regardless of their race or culture. That is not to say that we will be blind to our child’s background. One of the amazing things about an open adoption is the knowledge of our child’s cultural background and thus the capability to learn and incorporate this culture in their life. We believe that it is important to know your background as it helps to define you. Since we live in the center of a large city we are fortunate to be surrounded by different cultures and have many friends of different racial backgrounds. We hope to learn as much as we can about our child’s race/culture and do what we can to keep them involved in this culture, be it cooking traditional recipes, attending church services with a majority of culturally similar members and celebrating holidays that represent their culture. Additionally, we have also joined a support group that focuses on transracial families so that we can learn and be proactive for challenges we might face.

Our House and Neighborhood

Home Sweet Home

We live in a two-story brick house in the center of a large city in Oklahoma. Our neighborhood consists of homes built during the turn of the century and is close to many things. There are two grade schools nearby as well as a prestigious university. Being close to all these schools means that we have a great neighborhood full of young families, professors and teachers. One of the grade schools that is just down the street recently renovated their playground and we can’t wait to take our child there to play after work/school or during the weekend.

Neighborhood Park

We are also close to many biking paths that connect us to our vibrant downtown or to other nearby parks. Many of our family members live just a few miles away including Korey’s parents who also happen to have a pool, and they’ve been excitedly stocking up on kids toys and pool accessories for fun in the sun. Events that we love in our neighborhood include decorating for holidays, passing out candy to the many trick-or-treaters that stop by our house on Halloween, cheering on the runners that run by our house during our city’s famous marathon, and walking just down the street to cheer on the sporting events occurring at the university. Our neighborhood is definitely an exciting place to grow up!

Our Extended Families

Christmas with Korey's Family

Both of us come from large extended families and adoption is something that is familiar to both of our families. Korey has a sister who is adopted, and Jared has a cousin who is adopted. Most of our family lives close by, but we do have family members on both the East and West coast- perfect for vacation destinations.

One thing unique about Korey’s family is their Irish heritage. Every St. Patrick’s Day Korey’s family gathers together and makes traditional Irish foods including secret recipes that have been passed down for generations. Jared‘s family has a history in the farming business. One of our favorite memories is listening to Jared’s great grandfather’s stories of survival throughout the great depression in the hard-hit Midwest farms and his visits to hopping Jazz clubs in the 1920s. These traditions and stories of perseverance are gifts we can’t wait to share with this child.

Jared's Family

Our large extended families are so excited to meet this little child and welcome them to our loving and supportive families. Your child will be so loved and cherished!

From Us to You

We are so honored that you have taken the time to read our profile and so inspired by your courage. We have been married for 7 years and have hoped and prayed for a child without success. We know we will make great parents and believe that adoption is how God has planned for us to become parents. We have many friends and family members who are adopted and have always been touched by the pure love and strength that must have been present for their birth families to choose adoption. That being said, we want to take this time to tell you how grateful we are for considering adoption and want to share with you our promises to you and your child.

Korey is a nurse practitioner who works in a busy emergency room. She treats all ages including a large proportion of young children. Her ability to maintain her composure and react quickly in an emergent situation is something that will definitely carry forward to her success as a mother. If our child were ever to get hurt or become sick, she would not only have the compassion but also the knowledge to nurse them quickly back to health.

Jared is a graphic artist who works for a local community college. His job calls for him to be creative and use his artistic talent daily. He is well known for his ability to free sketch just about anything. His artistic talent and creative nature is something that will come in handy when helping our child with science fair projects, making crafts and holiday gifts, carving pumpkins and, well, just about anything artsy and creative.

We promise to raise your child in a loving-encouraging home where they will always feel safe and supported. We promise to provide them with a life full of laughter and opportunities. We vow to instill values of honesty, kindness, passion and courage in hopes that one day they too will build their own loving home and family. And we promise to cheer your child on in all their many interests. If they choose to be a champion underwater basket weaver, then by golly, we’ll make sure they have all the underwater basket weaving supplies they need and show up to all their events. Ultimately, our promise to you is that we will love your child with all our hearts every day of their life.

Our dreams are also to show your child the world and all the wonderful things it has to offer. We want to take your child to concerts and plays, to take vacations to other states and countries, to hike, camp and explore the outdoors. We plan to enroll them in not only an excellent school, but also one that meets any special needs that they may have. We also hope to sign them up for fun, social or educational, programs/clubs/teams and would love to help out with these as coach or leader. There is no dream too big, and we promise to try our best to help them create and reach their dreams.

Additionally, we know that there are adoption agencies that omit the birth family once adoption is finalized, and we willingly chose against this and in favor of an open adoption agency because we want you to maintain a part in this child’s life. This will be achieved in a way that is comfortable for you and the child. To you, we promise to be open with you throughout this process and to answer any questions or concerns you may have. We are open to emails, phone calls, letters, pictures, and visits. Adopting a child is the best gift that either of us could ever imagine, and we will never forget the absolute blessing that this is. We will always respect you and promise to convey to your child how amazing you were to choose us to parent him or her. We cannot fathom any greater act of love in this and are truly thankful for your choice in adoption.

Warm regards,

Jared & Korey
