Josh & Heather

Hi, we are Heather and Josh! We are grateful for the opportunity to adopt again and hopefully give our daughter a little brother or sister. We will cherish this wonderful gift and promise to give everything we have to raise a kind, thoughtful, and most of all, happy child that knows he or she is doubly loved by both their biological parents and adoptive parents. We hope our profile gives you a sense of our commitment to family, how much we love each other and our daughter, and the desire we have to share that love through adoption.

Our Family

We bought a fixer-upper a few years back and have renovated room after room to make our house a home for our growing family. While Josh is the hands on guy, Heather controls the design for each project. Last spring we worked on our side porch. Josh built a door that matched the other vintage doors perfectly and installed hexagon tile and beadboard ceiling that gave the home even more character. We also built a deck upstairs where we enjoy sunsets and a view of the July 4th fireworks from the lake.

Our small town is big on family-friendly events and we revel in taking our daughter to watch the holiday parades, annual festivals and watching the summertime street performers - our favorite being the yo-yo master. The local library also has many educational events that are open to all and taking advantage of those has been a new trend in our family. We also enjoy the “Music in the Park” events where you bring your own chair and sit by the waterside to enjoy a local band.

Playing a round of golf on the numerous courses in our area is another passion of ours. We enjoy the quiet time together in nature that golf affords and it's a sport we especially look forward to sharing with our children. During the summer, most of our meals are prepared on the grill in the backyard. Heather prepares the meal and Josh enjoys sitting on the back patio manning the grill!

How Adoption has Affected Us

Let the Celebration Begin!

By far, the best thing that has ever happened to us was adopting our daughter and it has literally changed every aspect of our lives. It has changed our focus from being inward to more outward looking as we see Hana grow up. She makes us happy to get up at 5:15am and see her smiling face over the edge of the crib.

One of the biggest changes for us is in how we view the world. We are now starting to see the world through Hana’s eyes. As we are witness to her experiencing things for the first time, it has reminded us of our childhoods and how important traditions, holidays and family events were to us and the immense role that our parents played in making those events meaningful. We are realizing more and more every day that we are now in that position and strive to make every moment count.

The second biggest impact adoption has had is to teach us patience. We now slow down for the little things, because those little things are not so little to our daughter. We value even the tiniest of moments that touch our hearts. Hana reminds us every day that true joy is really captured in those moments and to continue to look for them.

How We Met

Trip to Arizona

We can thank Josh's sister-in-law, who is also Heather's best friend, for introducing us. Even though Josh was from a small town and Heather a city girl, she knew we were perfect for each other and it took no time at all for us to figure that out as well. We enjoyed each other's sense of humor and laughter was definitely a point of attraction.

Living on opposite sides of the state, we talked on the phone for hours until finally the weekend would come and one of us would make the two hour drive to see the other. After a year of long distance dating, Josh took Heather on a surprise birthday weekend getaway and asked her to marry him (such a romantic!). Heather, of course, said yes and less than six months later moved across the state and became a small town girl. In the fall of 2012, we had a beautiful outdoor wedding surrounded by our closest family and friends celebrating true love.

Our Extended Families

Mother Daughter Time

Heather's family all live within a couple hours' drive and meet regularly for holidays and birthday celebrations. The all time favorite tradition is FUN-DO, which is the annual February birthdays celebration where we stuff our faces with fondue. The table is surrounded with family and friends and boy do we get loud! Josh and Uncle Chuck keep everybody laughing and Heather and Aunt “Soooosie" snap photos and videos of the silliness.

Family Dinner

Heather has a younger brother with whom she is very close. They Facetime several times a week and visit each other as often as possible. He can’t stay away long from his favorite niece either and his daughter is the apple of Heather's eye too! They share a passion for soccer and Heather enjoys watching her niece at tournaments around the state and supporting her at soccer camp hosted at the nearby university.

Josh comes from a larger family of six with two brothers and a sister. All of Josh's siblings and parents live within an hour of each other and get together often. Easter at Grandpa Scratchy’s (for his scratchy beard) is a family favorite. While the 7 grand kids search for Easter eggs, the siblings reminisce about their childhood on the creek catching fish. Josh's brother and sister-in-law live very close to us and we spend a lot of time with them and our 9 year old nephew who adores his Uncle Josh! They have a love for computers and wherever Josh is, our nephew is sitting right next to him playing his video games.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We love our community! We live in a small town on Lake Michigan where tourists from all over the world visit because of its beautiful sandy beaches, well-manicured parks, and many family friendly activities. As a family, we take full advantage of this by walking down the street to our favorite park, to the library or the farmers market, as well as enjoying the lake by watching the sunset, building sandcastles, boating and kayaking.

Within the immediate neighborhood, there has been a resurgence of young families. Children are out playing games or walking to and from school on a regular basis. We look forward to the days (not too far away!) when our daughter can play with the neighborhood kids at the park or walk to school with her friends.

We found the home of our dreams - walking distance from a quaint downtown, five blocks from an exclusive university and two blocks away from one of the best K-12 schools in the state. Location was perfect but it needed a lot of renovations. So, we put on our hard hats, watched a lot of YouTube videos and HGTV and went to work!

The greatest satisfaction has come from watching our daughter crawl and walk around these rooms as she grows up and builds her childhood memories.

From Us to You

Our hope is that we conveyed how excited we are to adopt another child and how meaningful it would be to our entire family. Although we cannot come close to understanding the sacrifice you are making, we offer our promise to give our wholehearted love and support to your child, in a home filled with laughter and imagination and a sister that knows exactly how it feels to be adopted.

Even before we married in 2012, family has always been a top priority for us. We both have wonderful memories of our childhood with our siblings and parents and cannot wait to share the same values and experiences. For Josh, spending countless hours doing woodworking with his Grandpa, seeing and feeling the patience demonstrated with a child is something he will always remember and will be a part of how we raise a child. For Heather, seeing the sacrifices made by her parents so she and her brother could travel the country playing the sports they loved, impressed upon her the value of parental support and giving up everything so your child can have every opportunity. Just like our parents did for us, we hope to instill confidence, a sense of right and wrong, an appreciation for hard work and a belief in themselves that will allow them to see anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

We strongly believe that raising a child really does take a village! Not only from the support they give, but the learning opportunities that they present. When we talked to our families about our intentions to adopt, they were so happy to extend the family and immediately starting talking about all the ways they would love this child - from Heather's mom teaching her grandchild how to paint watercolors or crochet and to our nephew, who is super excited to teach his cousin how to play video games or catch frogs in the pond!

Our tight knit community celebrates their rich cultural heritage with festivals that attract thousands each year and has a multitude of activities available at our fingertips. We look forward to making memories on one of the greatest beaches in the country that is just a fifteen minute walk from our house. Arts and sciences are actively supported in our small town and we will be sure to surround your child with these interests - robotics, pottery, gardening, music lessons, just to name a few.

Adoption offers us the hope of becoming a family of four and we are excited to experience this process with you. If you choose us to raise your child, we look forward to the role you will play. Letters, shared photos, birthday celebrations, whatever you choose that to be. From the beginning, your child will know that you chose adoption because you love him or her and that love allowed you to put his or her needs above your own. We look forward to getting to know you and your family so we can share with your child their beginnings and who you are.

If we travel the road of adoption together, it will be with respect and honesty. From the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate you taking the time to read our profile.
