JD & Alex
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for considering us as potential parents for your baby. We have long dreamed of becoming parents and raising a family grounded in love and with a profound sense of respect for each other and all peoples. We believe everything in life happens for a reason and look forward to taking this journey with you.
We will strive hard to ensure our children are raised in an environment that represents and respects diversity. We currently live in a very diverse area, and with our military moves, most often find ourselves in locations made of various ethnic populations. We have dear family and friends who immigrated to America from all across the globe! We have seen and been humbled by the challenges they've faced while finding their way in America.
We are both lucky enough to have spent significant time overseas whether through the military, on leisure travel or studying abroad. Our experiences around the world have opened our eyes and taught us more about people than we ever thought possible. From learning about various cultures to living in areas where we ourselves were the minority such as in Guam and in Egypt, we feel as though our experiences have helped prepare us for this journey of adoption. It is our mission to raise our children to not only see the good in the world, but to add to it.
Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other
Alex About JD: JD is one of the most hard-working and driven individuals I've ever met. Along with that drive and determination, comes a man full of love and compassion to share with the world. From serving his country in the military, to his travels across the globe, he excels at all he sets out to do. He has made me a better person; encouraging me and believing in me at times I didn't believe in myself. He has taken my family in to be his own, and when my father was dying, JD didn't bat an eyelash at jumping in the car nearly every weekend for a year and driving 7 hours to spend less than 48 hours with him. Family means that much to him.
JD About Alex: Alex has an amazing and profound respect for all human life. Be they children or elderly or just less privileged, she is constantly showing people love and compassion. I am always learning from her and trying to emulate her character. Besides her good nature, she has an impressive ability to connect with people and has a hilarious sense of humor. She IS the person you want to be around at any event. I am used to being in the spot light as a more senior military officer, but when Alex and I are together, I let her do the talking.
We promise to provide this little one with more adventures than he or she can count! As a couple, we are often on the go and searching out new adventures. Be it looking for a fun, new spot in the local community to enjoy dinner, to jumping on a plane and flying to another country to immerse ourselves in a new culture, we thrive on adventure! Being a military family has provided us with countless opportunities for amazing adventures throughout our relationship, and given our hopes and dreams for the future, we see no need to stop exploring when we bring a little one into the family! We truly look forward to growing our family and sharing our love for life and adventure with our children. We often daydream about the day we get to pack a little suitcase that belongs to our child and take them along with us as explore this beautiful world we get to live in.
Our House and Neighborhood
Our community is a young and revitalizing town with lots of cultural diversity. Home to Old Dominion University, the largest Navy base in the country, The Virginia Historic Triangle and a major NATO Headquarters, there is an endless supply of new faces, cultural events and celebrations of American Heritage. As a military family, we move every few years, and are fortunate enough to have moved back to Virginia, and into the neighborhood we hoped to bring a child home to one day!
We live in a two-story, three-bedroom home, with a potential baby's room right next to ours. We love our backyard with beautiful flowers and a swing where you can even hear the sound of the local church bells in the afternoon and smell the fresh salty air of the Chesapeake Bay just blocks away.
We live in a very family-friendly neighborhood with kids all around! In fact, most afternoons after school, there are no less than four kiddos who run around in our front yard! We have a beautiful, new elementary school within walking distance of our home, as well as base-access which provides us with the opportunity to visit the gym, the swimming pool, and even participate in recreational activities such as boating or sailing. Norfolk is an ethnically diverse town, with so many opportunities to learn and grow together as a family! Though we move a lot, the experiences we gather around the country stay with us forever.
Our Extended Families
We both value time with our extended family more now than ever before. Over the years we have spent time out of the country with the military, and now we are fortunate to be stationed within 4 hours of both of our siblings! JD's parents, too, just moved to the area this year to be near his brother and his wife in North Carolina. They are very much looking forward to becoming grandparents! Alex's mom, a retired schoolteacher, is also looking forward to having a new grand baby to love and spoil. Alex's older sister, who just gave birth to our first niece, and her family live in the Virginia foothills in Lexington, VA. We have had a lot of fun being aunt and uncle to our nephew. Our nephew absolutely adores his uncle JD and wants to do everything just like he does! We love planning trips and finding new ways to challenge his curiosity. We believe that new experiences are critical to a child's upbringing and can't wait to explore the East Coast and the great outdoors with our children, nieces and nephews.
From Us to You
There are no words to express fully our gratitude for even taking the time to read this letter. We can only imagine what a difficult decision this must be for you. We want to take a moment to make a vow to you right now, that we will devote our lives to giving your child a fair, just, stable, and compassionate home full of love and hope.
On perhaps our second date, Alex shared with JD that adoption was deep in her heart, and a lifelong dream. Fast forward to 2018, here we are, together, on this beautiful journey to adopt our first child. We have tried to have children on our own, and have been unable to successfully carry to term. After several losses we looked at one another with the realization on our hearts that everything happens for a reason, and that now is the time to pursue our adoption dream. We believe that adoption is God's plan for us, and we are giving it our all, and dream of the day that we bring home our first child. We have been together for 8 years, traveled the world, enjoyed our time as a couple, and now find ourselves yearning for another soul to share our love and home with.
Alex is a pediatric speech therapist, working with children from ages 0-3. She is a former special education teacher, and has worked with children for over 14 years. She has so much experience and love to share! JD, a career military officer, is devoted to God and country and believes in leading by example through every interaction with his fellow man. He is a devoted husband and has a thirst for new experiences to share with his family. He is also the ultimate uncle to our precious nephew, and is never too busy to be there for a game of chase or to throw the ball around in the backyard with him.
We are very fortunate to have loving families, who are also waiting with open arms to share their love with your child. In fact, both grandmothers are retired schoolteachers who cannot wait to spend the rest of retirement loving on their grand babies! Both of us are extremely close to our siblings, and look forward to raising the cousins to be as close as siblings. We may move every few years with the military, but are hearts always lead us back home to our families...
We believe in active parenting through setting a good example, instilling confidence in children and opening their minds through a variety of life experiences that they will remember forever. As a child, JD was an Eagle Scout and a scholar-athlete. Alex was very involved in the church and the community. Because of the values instilled in us during our upbringings, it has become our dream to raise children to have strong character and integrity above anything else.
With hearts full of love, we reach out to you now to extend an invitation to be become part of our family and as involved as you may wish to be. We dream of raising children from different backgrounds than our own, and in doing so, recognize the integral role you play in that. We are happy to send photos, letters, and arrange phone calls and visits! We respect whatever decision you make, but please know we are always here for you, with open arms.
