Adoption in Our Lives

Our Family

In July of 2017 we adopted our first child, a beautiful girl named Isabella, which has changed our lives forever.

Leading up to the adoption we had several chances to talk with her birth parents by phone and eventually got to spend some very special time with them in person along with her biological brother. We instantly found a connection with them, and a deep appreciation for the choice they had made to place Izzy for adoption. We found ourselves naturally opening up in ways we hadn't anticipated, sharing lots of stories about our families, sending photos, and talking about all different aspects of our lives together.

We regularly exchange letters, pictures and enjoy sending keepsakes to each other. They recently sent us a journal which they started writing the day Isabella was born. We were overwhelmed and thankful to have this gift, not just for us, but for Isabella when she is ready to learn more about her adoption story. This will be really nice to have, as we know at some point in time our daughter will be curious and may want to know more about her biological family, perhaps wanting to meet them one day. We are okay with this, and even look forward to it, if it is what they want as well. Not a single day goes by without thinking of them with respect and immense gratitude.

Our Leisure Time

Hiking in Israel

We have active lives that include recreation, hobbies and volunteering throughout our community.

Tammy serves on the board for a local non-profit organization that provides services for the homeless in our community. Robert volunteers several times each year at a local food bank and a local hospital for kids, helping with day-to-day activities, as well as special events that raise money to provide services for people in need.

Family Fun

We love to travel, taking several trips each year. On vacation we explore cultural and historical sites, museums, as well as the great outdoors. Recently we took a hiking trip through several national parks, visited with friends and family in New York City and took our daughter to the beach for the first time while vacationing in Florida.

Tammy is an avid reader, enjoys spending time with her parents, jogging, making beaded jewelry and gardening. Robert enjoys playing golf with friends, working on household improvement projects, and learning about science and technology through reading and home projects.

Now that we have a daughter, our leisure time has become much more focused around providing engaging experiences which we all enjoy together and help her develop. We take walks with our dog, visit with friends and neighbors, enjoy community festivals, read books, play games, cook meals and seek out the great children's activities at the local libraries and museums. We can't wait to share all of these experiences with another child in the future.

Cultural Diversity

We welcome cultural diversity in our lives. We live in a diverse community that includes a variety of races, religions, and cultures. We regularly travel to different parts of the world to experience different ways of life firsthand.

Today, we enjoy teaching our daughter, who has Latino/Hispanic ancestry, words and phases in Spanish and spending time with others in the Latino community at restaurants, cultural events and festivals. Two of our close friends include families with adopted children the same age as our daughter. Together, we are creating community and understanding for our children that embraces and celebrates where they come from. We will continue to enhance these relationships as we adopt again.

We plan to continue to celebrate cultural diversity through education and providing experiences that help ourselves and future adopted child understand his/her identity. If the child should have a different race/ethnicity than our own, we will embrace that as an opportunity to learn more and weave this cultural heritage into our own family life. We would make it a priority to include foods, arts, language, music, books, stories, people and travel that represent the child's cultural heritage, as well as those of our own family histories.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We are fortunate to live in a beautiful house located about five miles from the downtown area in a peaceful, Ohio neighborhood. Our house was built in the 1920s and has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a traditional dining room, a living room, a den and a large family room where we play games, entertain guests, watch movies and read by the fireplace in the winter months.

The house has undergone many recent renovations, including a remodeled kitchen and bathrooms and custom built book cases, fireplace and mantle in the family room. In the summertime, our daughter and her cousins love splashing around in the sprinklers in our yard with other neighborhood kids, while our dog chases them around with a smile.

Hanging Out on Our Front Porch

Our neighborhood has top-ranked schools, beautiful parks, trees, gardens, bike trails, locally owned restaurants, shops, galleries, a small college campus, two neighborhood pools and a local movie theater. It's especially beautiful during the spring when the tulips and flowering trees are in full bloom, and when everyone is looking forward to a summer of fun.

The neighborhood elementary, middle and high schools are located two blocks from our house, where we take walks with our dog, talk with neighbors, and play at the playgrounds. The street we live on is filled with families with children of all ages, which makes visiting nearby parks more exciting and ensures there's always something fun around the corner.

Our Extended Families

Tammy's Family

Tammy grew up in the neighborhood where we live today, less than one mile from the house where her parents still reside. Robert's parents live in a nearby neighborhood, also in the house where he lived as a child.

Both sets of parents are supportive and encouraging with our decision and plan to adopt again, are very close with our daughter, and are especially excited to play the role of grandparents for another child.

Robert Hiking With His Brothers

Our family loves to travel together. We've visited Europe, Africa, Asia, Central America as well as many great cities and national parks in the U.S.

Our siblings currently live with their families in cities on the east coast and abroad, which are fun to visit -- we enjoy the museums, festivals, food, shopping and scenery. When our cousins, nieces and nephews are in town, we do lots of fun activities -- playing card games, making crafts, baking cookies, going to amusement parks, canoeing, swimming and playing in nearby parks.

From Us to You

Thank you for taking the time to look through our profile and considering us as adoptive parents. We believe adoption is the greatest gift someone can give, and admire your courage and conviction.

We have been married for eight years and together as a couple for over 15 years. We have had an incredible journey together, surrounded by the love of a close-knit family. This has included attending graduate school together, supporting each other's successful careers, taking care of one another's families, raising our daughter, many celebrations and travelling the world together. While we realize how blessed we are, there is a dream in our lives we are seeking to fill. We want nothing more than to bring a second child into our family, a sibling for our daughter; and build a loving, safe, happy, and healthy family together. We are unable to have children on our own, and adoption allows us to achieve our dream together.

Our parents, siblings and close friends have been important sources of support. They have provided love, given advice and made commitments to help with our daughter in so many ways. We have the foundation to raise another child. Our siblings, their spouses and children are looking forward to meeting their new niece/nephew/cousin and will be integral in his/her development.

Our parents, who recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversaries, are particularly excited to play an active role in caring for their new grandchild on a frequent basis.

While respecting your wishes, we hope give you the chance to know about moments in the child's life. This would include updates, photos and letters — news about key events, such as graduations or other special occasions. When the child grows old enough to write, we will give him/her the encouragement to do so if this is your wish.

We cannot wait to grow, learn, travel, and celebrate life with our future growing family and share with you the milestones in your child's life. We will always be thankful for the opportunity you have blessed us with. Your child will know this, as your gift, courage, and love will be a focus of conversations and lessons throughout the child's life.

We are looking forward to making our most important dreams come true.

We will keep you in our hearts.

Sincerely,

Robert & Tammy
