Lisa & Becky
We are a fun, loving couple with a nearly two-year-old son looking forward to welcoming another child into our home and family. Lisa comes from a large family, and we spend a lot of our time with our nieces and nephews. Family is the most important thing to both of us and we enjoy going on vacations with all of our extended family.
Adoption in Our Lives
We were overjoyed to welcome our son Ben to our family through adoption. We were elated to get the call when his birth mother chose us, and the day he was born nearly two years ago was the best day of our lives. We've watched him grow into a happy, kind little boy who loves playing with his nieces and nephews. Ben can't wait to be a big brother!
Becky has a first cousin who was brought into our family when he was six months old, through adoption. Becky was eight years old at the time and remembers how happy her aunt and uncle (and the whole family) were to welcome this child. This cousin was never thought of as different from his sibling, perhaps we were even more blessed to be able to know and love him through adoption. We have all grown up together and are still just as close in adulthood.
What it Means to be Parents
What we love about being parents is how much joy it brings our lives, every day and every second. Just seeing our son's face is enough to make our hearts melt. Watching him grow and learn new things makes every day an adventure. Each day we look forward to all the smiles, hugs and playfulness our son brings. Our son loves to be around other children and we look forward to growing our family to include a brother or sister for him. On the weekends and weeknights, we spend as much time as we can outdoors. We live in walking distance to a big park that offer places to ride bikes and run and also live only a short drive from state parks.
Our Childhood Memories
We both grew up in the city we now live in; Becky on the south side, Lisa on the north side. Becky has an older brother and a younger sister; her parents have been happily married for over fifty years. Becky's fondest childhood memories include exploring the neighborhood woods and playing pretend games outside (playing house, school, hospital, whatever). Lisa comes from a family of eight; she is the second youngest. Her mom baked frequently and Lisa was a big help in the kitchen. As a child, her mom would give her a little extra pan and she would bake a little cake of her own, just for her dad to enjoy when he came home from work.
Our Extended Families
We are so lucky that both of our families live no farther than a quick 15 to 20 minute drive from us. We have lots of family dinners together and they’re close by for impromptu movie and game nights. When we moved to our new home, it was a true family event with our family members there with their toolboxes helping connect appliances, unpack and decorate.
Lisa’s family is a big one, and she’s one of eight kids. That means there are tons of nieces and nephews nearby to play with, take to parks, go to the zoo or embark on some other adventure. One of the best things about our families is that we love being around each other, so when vacation time comes around, we usually spend them on the beach together. On every holiday, birthday and other special events, our families get together to enjoy the day. Ben loves going over to his cousins' house, where they play with toys and run around the yard. One of their favorite things to do together is decorate cookies -- the more sprinkles, the better! Everyone is very excited to welcome another child to the family.
Our House and Neighborhood
Our home is a two-story brick house in a Missouri neighborhood, full of families with kids. There are lots of big trees lining the street, and we have a big, fenced-in, flat backyard that’s perfect for soccer and other games. We also were happy to see when we moved in that the house came with a basketball hoop, and we’re out there a lot playing horse and one-on-one.
Our home is across the street from one of the biggest parks in our city, complete with playgrounds, a lake for fishing and concerts once a week in the summer. Our neighbors regularly get together for block parties, and decorating homes for the holidays is the norm. On Halloween every year, nearly every home is decorated and people drive from all over to see the displays. We have fun sitting out with our family on the front porch handing out candy to hundreds of trick or treaters. We all dress up for the festivities and last year our son was Superman.
From Us to You
Hi! We’re Becky and Lisa and we appreciate you taking the time to learn about us. We both feel so lucky that in each other, we met the person we are supposed to be with the rest of our lives. We knew from the moment we met nine years ago that we were going to be together, and we were married six years ago surrounded by our family.
We recently moved to a larger home and look forward to continuing to build our family. It’s always been both of our dreams to have children. We come from big families and there’s never a weekend we’re not surrounded by nieces and nephews. There’s nothing more fun for us than to load up the car and take our son and nephews to the zoo, play with Legos or decorate cookies. Lisa is the silly one, making funny faces and dancing at the drop of a hat. Becky patiently reads to little ones and teaches them how to plant seeds in the garden or shape dough into cookies.
Becky chose her profession, pediatric nursing, to be able to help kids. Every day, she’s instrumental in bringing smiles to kids’ faces and helping them through their tough days. We traveled down the road of fertility treatments, but like some couples, that proved unsuccessful. A few years ago, we became foster parents, taking care of babies in emergency situations for short periods of time. Our hearts expanded far beyond what we knew was ever possible. These experiences led us down the path to adoption and we adopted our son at birth last year.
Something that makes us special is the time we’re able to spend with our parents, siblings and extended families, who live within a short drive of us. They’re there for us when we need them, and we’re able to be close by when they need us. This year, we took two big vacations with family, including to a lake house that’s been a family tradition for decades. Our family has loved adding our son to these vacations and can’t wait to add another little one to all the fun.
Our family may be a bit different by some definitions but not by most. While we may not have the traditional mother and father roles, we do have everything those roles represent: an environment that is caring, nurturing, fun and adventurous. Through adoption, we want to raise our children to be kind, honest and live life with a sense of humor. We have the support of our families who will be there every step of the way. We both have family members who are adopted, and we know that family connections are important.
This child will always know he/she is adopted. We believe this child will be blessed twice; by you, for giving him or her life, and by being raised in our family too. We will send letters and pictures of the child to you and we truly want the child to know their birth parents. We will tell the child how special they are that they had so many people looking out for them.
Thank you for reading our letter. We hope it answers questions you may have and helps you as you make your important decision. We wish you peace and strength.
With love and gratitude,
Lisa & Becky
