Why We Chose Adoption

Our Family

We started discussing adoption when we were dating in 2011. We learned we had a preference for three children and that we were both interested in adopting at least one child.

After learning many lessons of the newborn phase with our first son, we had found our parenting stride by the time we welcomed our second child. The newborn days were easier the second time around as we had grown into more confident and experienced parents. Also, our younger son has benefited from having an older sibling looking out for him. We have built a loving and supportive family, but we do not think it is complete. We would love to adopt a child to complete our family.

As with other major life decisions, we have not taken the decision to adopt lightly. We have challenged each other, read literature on the topic, spoken with adoptive parents, adoptees and with several agencies. We continue to think through logistics, continuing education and the fact that growing as a family will be a journey. We are also giving thought to how we can make adjustments to our life to better support an adopted child of a different racial background.

We are hopeful about adoption, realistic about the challenges ahead and optimistic about our future as a family of five.

Our Leisure Time

Johnny's Ice House After One of Jamie's Hockey Games

We spend much of our leisure time with our two boys, playing soccer, basketball or baseball in the park or around our neighborhood, visiting the zoo and museums, going out to eat and enjoying other fun activities in the city.

Walking Through Wrigley

We enjoy staying in shape, so Eileen makes regular trips to the gym, while Jamie plays ice hockey. We are both avid readers, with Eileen enjoying books about business, psychology and real world events, while Jamie enjoys fiction of all kinds.

We are fortunate to have many close friends in the city, so we often meet them at restaurants or their houses or ours to catch up over dinner.

After putting the kids to bed at night, we like to relax on the couch and catch up on a show—recent favorites include Game of Thrones, Killing Eve, Atlanta and True Detective.

We are incredibly excited to include this child in the joy that comes from our family spending time together.

Cultural Diversity

With Friends in Seattle

Given we are open to a child of any racial background, we continue to educate ourselves on transracial adoption. We recognize the number one focus will be ensuring that our child feels s/he belongs. We want them to see people that look like him/her on a regular basis— in our neighborhood, in positions of success, on sports teams, at church, in school and elsewhere. We will make every effort to ensure this child is not "the only" but rather one in a diverse mix of individuals around which we are building our life.

We are fortunate to live in a city that is home to millions of people of different racial backgrounds. We are committed to frequenting different neighborhoods to ensure our children see people of all types of races and have the opportunity to learn about different cultures, including their own. As one specific example, Eileen has found a hair salon nearby that focuses on doing hair for transracial families and teaching adoptive parents how to care for the skin and hair of children of color. This is one way of many we will engage the community around us to learn how to best care for this child with openness and humility.

We also will embrace the cultural traditions and celebrate the holidays that are important to the birth parents of this child. We have spoken with a number of friends and colleagues of color and will continue to lean on them for support and guidance on this journey.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in Chicago, Illinois. We are a block from the elementary school that your child will attend. It is one of the best public schools in the city, and one of the local pro sports teams built the school a new soccer and baseball field, where we play soccer and baseball every weekend in the summer. We are 5 blocks away from one of the most famous baseball stadiums in the US, and we regularly go to baseball games and events at the stadium as a family. There are tons of children in the neighborhood, many from diverse families of different backgrounds and races. There is an annual block party where all the families get together. We are one block away from a great street with lots of dining and entertainment, including a historic movie theatre, ice cream shops, a bowling alley, and child play and enrichment spaces, offering classes in art and music. There are parks every few blocks, so we go to different ones most weekends. We are a 10 minute drive from the zoo, which is right next to the lake, and we go there regularly as well. We're fortunate to live in a city that offers many wonderful experiences for families.

Our Extended Families

In Ireland With Eileen's Parents

We are currently a family of four with two young boys we love very much, Cade and Pierce. We are excited for your child to complete our family. Our extended families live in Ohio and Florida. We have an annual family reunion in Ohio in the summer with Jamie's parents, brother and sister and their children. Then we enjoy a big Christmas celebration in Florida where Eileen's uncles play the piano and guitar, and we sing songs with the kids and eat beef tenderloin. Grandma and Grandpa on both sides visit regularly and love to spend time with the kids. Eileen's mom is a great cook and has taught her tricks to Eileen. There are lots of young cousins with different backgrounds and experiences. They enjoy sports (soccer and baseball), along with playing superheroes, house and school. Jamie likes to play soccer, baseball, and hockey with Cade, Pierce and the cousins. There are aunts, uncles, and Grandmas that are teachers, so there is always a lot of reading and educational opportunities in the family.

Family Baptism

While our families don't live nearby, we FaceTime, call and text with them often. We also post photos through a shared album. Eileen's family is rather high energy and talkative. Jamie's is more reserved and calm. Both are 100% supportive of us welcoming our third and final child into our family through adoption.

From Us to You

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to introduce our family to you as you consider adoption for your baby. We are inspired by the courage and resilience you have already shown in this process and would be honored to be considered as adoptive parents for your child.

Although it has been an exciting road to building our family, we've known for many years we would want to complete it through adoption. We grew up in small towns in different parts of the country. After college, we both felt the urge to explore more of the world and move to a big city. First Jamie, and then Eileen, moved to Chicago, where we fell in love with the city and eventually each other. During dates throughout the city, the topic of family and adoption came up often, and we agreed that we hoped for three children (just like our families in Florida and Ohio) and feel incredibly blessed to be able to complete that dream through adoption.

After getting married, we have been lucky enough to be blessed with two young boys, ages 5 and 2. Having children was the most life changing event in both of our lives that somehow ended up feeling completely natural. We have found that we make a great team, and raising children has become the center point of our lives. In the last four years, we've learned so much, from changing diapers to sleep and potty-training to teaching a child how to read (still in progress). However, the biggest lessons have also been the simplest. We've found love and patience to be the most effective tools for parenting, and we are proud of how our two boys are developing into young men. Now, we enjoy the city of Chicago in a completely new way as our days are filled with local parks, 10 minute walks to the Cubs baseball park to enjoy a game or the atmosphere, ice hockey practice, and trips to the library or museums. We are an active family, and we visit one of the five parks in close proximity to our house nearly every day the weather allows. We love to play baseball, soccer, basketball and many other games with the boys. One of the best public schools in the city is only a block from our house, and we are looking forward to walking our kids to school on a daily basis.

As much as we love and appreciate the many blessings in our lives, we know that our family is not complete. We could not be more excited to bring one final addition into our family. We would be honored if you would consider us as adoptive parents for your child. Your child would become a part of a family with two loving parents and two older brothers that we have no doubt would love and protect him/her. We are committed to giving this child every opportunity from an excellent primary and secondary education to college and beyond and helping them find their own path through life by exploring sports, art, music, and any other area of interest. All this being said, our most important goal as parents is to instill the values in our children that can make both us and you proud. The desire and ability to stand up for what is right, kindness and respect for everyone, and pride in their family and heritage will always be more important to us than traditional measures of success. We hope that you will give us a chance to make your child part of the life and family that we love so much. If you choose us, we would welcome the opportunity for you to remain an important part of the child's life, by remaining in contact by letters, e-mail updates or in person meetings. We are here to support you, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have for us. We would love to hear from you.
