Landon & Rachael
A lesson we've learned: Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans ... but that doesn't make it any less beautiful. Now we can't imagine our future lives any other way. If given the opportunity, we cannot wait to share our passions, joys, senses of humor (even got the dad jokes already lined up), and most of all, our love with your child. Regardless of who you choose, we strongly appreciate you taking the time to read our profile.
What It Means to Become Parents
This child we're seeking to adopt will be our first, so while we're not parents yet, we believe being a parent will mean opening our world to something bigger and so much more important than ourselves. It will entail loving someone more than we can fathom, and working together as a team to protect and provide the best possible life we can offer. It will be an adventure, to say the least, in which we'll guide the child through the good days, the great days, and (arguably most importantly) the bad days. What we expect to enjoy the most will be witnessing and helping the child develop right before our eyes. We've thus far been able to experience this "second hand" with our friends' and families' children, and know there's true magic in a child's first word, first step, first day of school – it's all pure gold. Generally speaking, we're in awe of how people become who they become, and we'd love nothing more than the opportunity to extend everything from our hearts and home to our interests and characteristics to a child, and be able to be the ones who are there every step of the way in his/her upbringing.
Our Leisure Time
Our leisure time has two priorities: the first being the people, with the second being the activity/setting. Since our interests are so similar, our free time is fairly easy to plan, with our classic favorites being spending time with friends and family watching sports (go Rangers, Cowboys, Stars, Mavericks, Longhorns, and Horned Frogs!), playing games, or simply hanging out (preferably in a pool, thanks to the Texas heat). We are fortunate to have most of our friends live nearby, several of whom have kids of their own or are expecting, so the child will already have play dates lined up! We also love taking at least one trip a year, and just over this past year we've traveled to Europe, Cancun, and Estes Park, Colorado, where we lived it up hiking, tubing, water skiing, and going on tours of cities. So while Europe may be a tad too ambitious for 'baby's first trip', we're within driving distance of theme parks, beaches, national parks, and sports stadiums where we'd love to explore with a child of our own. On a more routine basis, we love walking our two adorable dogs, Landry and Mack; and while Landon coaches select boys' baseball, Rachael enjoys working out both at the gym and outdoors. In the future, we can't wait to add a stroller to our dog walks, and will certainly be scouting out the smallest versions of bats, golf clubs, and basketballs we can find.
Our Dream for This Child
Our dream for this child is for him/her to be happy, healthy, and someone who's able to find what he/she is passionate about in life. While that may seem simple, in this day and age, self-confidence and true happiness seem to be more and more difficult to come by. For example, as trivial as it seems to mention, neither of us are 'swept up' by social media, which in so many ways enables comparison to others, often at the expense of one's ability to appreciate what he/she has. We will encourage this child to carry themselves the same way. We overall have a healthy outlook on life; that it's about the simple things and is not to be taken too seriously, which we wish to pass down to this child in one of the many, many things we'll teach him/her about life. With the love we'll show this child, we'll aspire for him/her to in turn love and treat others with respect, to learn how to become a good friend to others, to identify proper priorities if push ever comes to shove, and to live an honest and appreciative life. Each of us has had a wonderful upbringing thanks to our families, who have always been nothing but supportive; and we hope and pray to have the opportunity to provide the same for this child.
Our House and Neighborhood
We absolutely love our home. We've been in it for 5 years and can't wait for all of a child's "firsts" to take place within it. Our neighborhood has the feel of the great American suburbia with a colonial theme throughout. There are three parks within walking distance, a community pool (with a kiddie pool and fountain), and an HOA clubhouse. We love the beauty and security our neighborhood has to offer. We have an elementary school in the neighborhood that is just a short walk away. Our town boasts a wonderful greenbelt packed with walking and biking trails. They are full of families with strollers, walking their dogs, and enjoying the outdoors. The trails meander along several large ponds with ducks that the kids love feeding. Each year, our neighborhood hosts a parade for the 4th of July, followed by a huge pool party. We go 'all out' for Halloween with extensive house decorations and block parties for trick-or-treating. And walking the neighborhood to see all the beautiful Christmas displays (with many houses in an unspoken contest with each other) is a very popular December activity. Throughout the year, our HOA has themed monthly gatherings at either our community pool or clubhouse for neighbors to come together and socialize. At this point, our neighborhood walks include our two dogs (a black lab mix and german shepherd mix), and we can't wait for it to also include a child.
Our Extended Families
We're both fortunate to come from families comprised of wonderful, salt-of-the-earth people. Rachael's parents and Landon's mom, as well as the rest of their extended family on both sides, all live within the same area. This makes splitting time between both sides of the family for holidays, birthdays, and spur of the moment gatherings easy to do. When we get together, there's always plenty of game-watching or game-playing taking place (or often times both). With kids on both sides (and an expectant mother on Landon's side, with others of age surely soon to follow), there's plenty of other little ones to play with. We also are fortunate to have plenty of shining examples of loving and long-lasting marriages in nearly every couple in our family, namely Rachael's parents of 35 years. The love that we receive from our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins is one of the many reasons why we want to adopt a child of our own. We know that everyone will be over the moon ecstatic once we introduce our new addition. If anything, we'll just have to deal with who'll win the game of "I get to hold the baby first!"
From Us to You
Hello! We first and foremost want to thank you for taking the time to read our profile and to commend you for having the courage, selflessness, and strength that's required to consider this decision. Because of people like you, other couples in this world are able to have hope in growing their families when they otherwise could not.
To provide a glimpse into our backstory, we've tried to have a child of our own for several years, after which we were finally told by doctors that even with science's help, conceiving a biological child of our own is just not in the cards for us. So we're taking that message as God's way of telling us that we are destined to go on a slightly different path. After some self-reflection and exploration, it was incredibly easy to realize that our desire is to become parents, not necessarily become pregnant ... so shortly thereafter we found ourselves writing this letter to you.
We cannot express in words how honored and privileged we'll be if selected to be the adoptive parents of your baby. We know we'll be receiving the greatest gift a person can possibly give in this entire world and will welcome him/her with the most open of arms (which, with Landon being 6'4, is pretty wide). We look forward to introducing the child to our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and all other loved ones as our new little miracle. Our "village" is comprised of not only us but of our loving, down-to-earth family and friends; and we know the child will be loved and cherished exactly the same as every other member of our family. We even have personal experience with adoption, as Landon's dad was adopted as a newborn. By hearing his stories, we would love to be able to provide a child the love and opportunities his adoptive parents provided him.
We are excited to take the love, commitment, and fun we have in our marriage and extend those qualities to our new little one. We first met riding the same bus home in middle school, and over the years danced around the idea of being more than friends. It was a mere 12 years later when we began dating, and were married 3 years after that. Over that time we were able to learn how well we work together and how we're able to balance each other out if ever one of us needs it. We look forward to how much fun we'll have and growth we'll experience in taking on the amazing, wonderful challenge of raising a child. We've spent years loving and spoiling our dogs, but despite our best efforts, we still unfortunately have yet to master teaching them to talk ...
We are firm believers that it never hurts to sprinkle humor into life from time to time. We certainly know adoption is a matter not to be taken lightly; but in our own personal experience of facing curve balls the universe has thrown at us, we've learned that nothing is ever so bad that there's not at least something to smile about.
Most importantly, we want you to know how grateful and significant you will always be to us, and in return, we'll work our hardest to assure you that your baby is in the very best of hands. We will happily share photos and emails of the child's growth, accomplishments, and experiences if you'd like to receive them. Regardless, we'll be 100% open and honest with the child about adoption and of how much of a miracle both you and he/she are to us. You will forever be an angel for what you have provided to our family. We thank you very much for considering us in your decision.
With love and respect,
Landon & Rachael
