E.J. & Alicia
We are excited to become first-time parents, and we hope that you can make our dream become a reality. You are probably reading dozens of potential parent profiles, and we want to thank you for taking the time to look through ours. We have waited a long time for a child and know that we will make excellent parents if selected to raise a child.
Education We Will Provide
Alicia is a teacher for the Department of Defense with certifications in K-12 gifted education and social studies. In addition, E.J. is a certified teacher in middle and high school Math and Science. Though E.J. has gone back to his career as a web developer, we feel confident that we will provide a child with a top-notch education and support at home. Living in Italy we have access to great Italian pre-schools that focus on language development, social interaction and will provide an opportunity for a child to become fluent in Italian at a very early age.
The military school on base provides an excellent learning environment for students including all the typical extracurriculars such as football, basketball, volleyball, band, choir, etc. There are many different clubs as well as after-school activities.
Our goal as parents is to ensure a college education is on the horizon as we both believe very strongly in the benefits of a college degree and additional schooling if necessary. We are both very passionate about education and feel that a child would enjoy all the adventures school in Italy can provide.
Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other
Alicia About E.J.: E.J. is a very compassionate person who often times puts others before himself. He volunteers frequently at my school, helping with technology, speaking to students about careers and college life, or helping me make sure a big project is done well. He is a great provider and is very routine oriented. I love that he equally helps in tasks around the house. He does the laundry daily, is a great help in the kitchen, and is a true partner in whom I can bounce ideas around with. E.J. is intelligent, articulate, and is loved by all who know him. He is friendly and engaging to strangers and friends alike, and kids naturally gravitate toward him. I am very lucky to have him in my corner as my best friend.
E.J. About Alicia: The qualities that drew me to Alicia when I first met her were her confidence and her strong work ethic. Alicia knows what she wants, and she will not rest until she achieves her goals. Throughout the years, she has shown herself to be an intelligent educator and an insightful organizer. I admire how she runs her classroom, and how she takes a genuine interest in her students. It always amazes me how the students look up to and appreciate her. Her friends and peers have come to respect and rely on her opinions. Whether it's planning a party, a school event, a family vacation, or a family dinner, nothing gets past her. She accounts for each and every detail. She loves and supports me in everything I do. I am a better person because of her.
Living overseas has afforded us a wonderful opportunity to travel, which has been a dream of ours since early in our relationship. Our first big trip out of the United States was Egypt in 2010. It was breathtaking to see the pyramids up close and even get a chance to climb down into one.
In 2011, we were lucky to receive a job offer that allowed us to move to Turkey and explored Istanbul and other places while there. Also, we enjoy going to London to see Alicia's cousin, his wife, and three daughters.
E.J. studied Spanish in high school and college, so his favorite trip has been Barcelona, Spain.
Alicia has worked very hard to turn E.J. into a beach person and finally succeeded with a week-long beach trip to Sardinia. It has been one of our favorite trips with our friends and their children. We also enjoy being able to rent a boat and go around the islands close to our home here in Italy to swim and enjoy the day with friends.
Alicia is just happy to travel anywhere even if it is just a short weekend trip away.
Our House and Neighborhood
We have close ties to the military community in Naples. We often go to football, basketball, and volleyball games just like many families in America. The military base has tons of youth programs available for a child. Additionally, we have several events coming up such as Trick or Treat, a Christmas tree lighting and a huge 4th of July celebration. The base has a variety of playgrounds, swimming pools, and a movie theatre. Many of our friends within the military community have children we spend time with at the playground or at other events.
We chose to live in the city close to the military base to immerse ourselves in Italian culture. We love our view overlooking the Bay of Naples and getting to see the cruise ships pull in to port every day on our patio where we enjoy having dinners and morning coffee on the weekends. Living in this part of Italy, we are very fortunate to be close to Rome and Pompeii. We have so much history in the area that we often take advantage of it on the weekends. Our home is a large apartment that is two stories and feels like a house. Upstairs on the main floor, we have a lovely kitchen, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. We have a big living room off the kitchen with a fireplace perfect for Christmas stockings. Downstairs we have another bedroom, two bathrooms, and more room for a play area, in addition to our huge gated patio.
Our Extended Families
Our families are spread out in different states and countries. We visit each of them every chance that we get. Our closest family is our cousins and their three lovely daughters in London. We see them often, and love spending holidays and celebrating birthdays with them.
When we visit our families, we enjoy catching up and spending time with each other over drinks and meals. We love Mexican food, Indian food, and going to Benihana's together. Other things we enjoy doing are taking strolls together in parks, and playing card games and board games together. One of our favorite games to play is Heads Up on our iPhone or iPad. We both love gathering together in the family room and trying to guess or act out the clues. The games always end with everyone laughing uncontrollably over the clue or the performances. Some card games that we enjoy playing together are euchre, rummy, and spades.
Both of our families are very supportive of our adoption plans. E.J. has one brother and Alicia has one brother, but none of us have children yet. Our parents, in particular, are very excited to have their first grandchild. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive family.
From Us to You
We are excited to become first-time parents, and we hope that you can make our dream become a reality. We first met in college on April Fools' Day in 2005. Neither of us was looking for a long-term relationship. Little did we know that the universe was about the play the ultimate joke on us. That night, we fell in love and have been together ever since. We have spent most of our married lives traveling the world and now reside in Naples, Italy.
Alicia is a teacher for the U.S. military, which brought us to Turkey and now Italy. E.J. works at home as a website developer. Living overseas has given us the opportunity to travel around the world; something we take advantage every chance we get. If you have ever dreamed of traveling the world and seeing different sights, know that the child we adopt will have that opportunity. We look forward to taking the child to Harry Potter World in London and to Walt Disney World in Paris. We can't wait to travel together as a family, building sand castles at the beach on the weekends, sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows with our friends, or stopping to play at parks as we road-trip around Europe. When we come home to Naples, we will eat dinner together as a family out on our patio overlooking the Bay of Naples. We will sit and smell the salty air of the Mediterranean Sea and listen to the crashing of the waves.
We want to raise a child that values education and will go to college. We will encourage them to work hard and always try their best. We will teach them to be honest, kind, and respectful of others. Our friends in the military community are our extended family, and we know that they will always be there for us. Along with our family stateside and abroad, we will provide the child with a caring, supportive, and loving family.
We always wanted to have children, but we were unable to become pregnant the traditional way. We are excited to become adoptive parents, as are our family and friends. We know in our hearts that adoption will make our family dreams come true. With your help, we can provide a child with all the love and encouragement they could ever need.
We believe very strongly in the child knowing where they come from. We will talk to them from a very young age about adoption, and they will know that you will always be a part of our family through the love that you have for them. Depending on your level of comfort and openness, we are happy to share emails, letters, and photos of the child as they grow as well as in-person visits. We want always for the child to think positively on their birth mother/parents and their families.
Finally, we want to thank you for reading our letter as you plan your adoption. Planning for an adoption can be challenging and emotional. We want you to know that we will love the child we adopt unconditionally, provide them with a safe and stable home, and make sure they get a good education. We will guide the child so that they can be a productive and successful member of society.
