I am so excited to become a mom, to experience life through the joy and imagination of a child. Building a family through adoption has been in my heart for a long time. I cannot imagine a greater gift than that of being able love and nurture a child. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my story. I look forward to getting to know your story too.
Why I Chose Adoption
I can't remember when I first learned what the word adoption means, but I know that adoption has been in my heart for a very long time. I have always felt that adoption was how I wanted to build my family.
I thought that I would begin the process of adoption after getting married, but I haven't yet found the person who is meant to be a forever best friend and partner.
I have spent the past several years thinking very hard, praying, and talking to friends and family about my dream of adoption. I know that I am now ready to become a mom through this amazing journey. I have a great career and home, but most importantly I have a wonderful network of friends and family who will support me and my child and love us unconditionally. Although I'm not married, my child will be loved and adored by a huge family.
I am choosing to adopt now because I know that I am ready to devote my life to loving, playing, laughing with, and nurturing a child.
My Leisure Time
My favorite thing to do on a day off is to go horseback riding. I love getting to be outside, to be around the horses, and soaking up the sense of peace that they provide. I have been riding since I was 9 years-old. My mom and I have a horse named Spots, who is stabled close to where my parents live and just under an hour's drive from my house. He's an older guy who still has a lot of spunk. It's been such a fun experience to see the excitement my friends' kids have when I take them to barn to see the horses. I can't wait to share this part of my life with a child.
I also love to read. I like books of all kinds. Both my friends and my mom are constantly providing me with new recommendations for the next thing to add to my reading list.
I really enjoy traveling. Many of my trips over the past few years have been to visit close friends and their families. I have friends and relatives across the country, which has allowed me to explore new places and be with people I love. I travel to North Carolina, where my best friend, her husband, and two daughters live a few times each year. I am so excited bring a little one on these special visits.
Fun Things I'm Excited to Do With My Child:
My House and Neighborhood
I live just outside a city in Pennsylvania in a house that I bought this past year. There are so many things that I love about the new house! There is a big screened in porch and a deck, which are great spots to sit and talk with friends after work. The kitchen gives me plenty of cookie baking space, and I so enjoy sitting in front of the fireplace to read a good book. The house has three bedrooms, one of which I set up as a kids' room for when my friends' kids come to stay and will easily be converted into a nursery.
I chose to move from the city to this neighborhood because several of my close friends and their families live within a ten minute drive. We get together often and all the kids have a great time playing. I also live in one of the best local school districts. The local library, swimming pool, and playground are less than five minutes away. I also love that there are woods just behind my house, and I have a large yard for a child to play in. There is a county park nearby that hosts free concerts on Sunday nights in the summer and a large jack o'lantern display at Halloween. The city is only twenty minutes away, and there are great activities for kids including the Children's Museum and Science Center.
My Extended Family
I had an amazing childhood- doing art projects with my mom, playing basketball in the driveway with my dad, loving pets, and being encouraged to explore and learn and love. My dad invented "thinking games," which he would play with my brother and me to keep us entertained on car rides. He also kept us laughing-- pretending to be a sea monster and chasing us around the house. My mom loves to read. Some of my favorite memories are of going to the library with her and then spending the afternoon reading the piles of books we brought home.
My family continues to be my greatest source of strength. I cannot wait to share my family with a child and they cannot wait to make new art projects and play new games.
My parents and brother live less than an hour away, and I often spend time with them on weekends. My mom and I go to the barn to ride our horse. My dad, brother, and I like to watch sports, and we also take the dog for long walks in the woods.
My favorite family tradition is our large Thanksgiving celebration. Our extended family all comes to my parents' house, where thirty or more of us share great food, laugh, and tell stories. Our larger extended family is very close and is a strong source of support. Everyone is so excited to welcome and love another member of the family.
From Me to You
I have wanted to be a mom for as long as I can remember and have dreamed of doing so through adoption. I have been preparing my heart and my home and am so excited to share the blessings of my life with a child.
One of the greatest gifts of my life is to be "Aunt Jess" to my best friend Bethany's daughters, who are adopted. I love those girls so, so much! They are pure joy and there is nothing I would rather do than spend time with them. I am lucky to have witnessed the beauty and love of a family built through adoption. I am so thankful that my child will have cousins who are also adopted and that we can all share in this experience together.
My parents and brother live less than an hour away and I see them often. My family filled my childhood with love and laughter, and I plan to do the same for my child. My mom encourages creativity, continues to let me know that it's OK to make a mess or get lost sometimes, and always has my back. My dad has an amazing sense of humor, is always thoughtful, and is a constant source of quiet strength. My brother is super smart and always dependable. I cannot wait to share my family and all that they have given me with a child. And they cannot wait to become Uncle John, Grandma, and Grandpa.
I work as a pediatrician in a children's hospital and could not ask for a better or more fulfilling job. I have an amazing group of coworkers, many of them are close friends. My job can be busy, and I know that there will be times when balancing work and being a mom will be hard. My first priority will always be my child, and I know that the supportive group of people I work with and my tremendous network of family and friends will help me to always put family first.
Education allowed me to reach my goal of becoming a pediatrician, and I want my child to have the best educational opportunities available. I moved to a neighborhood just outside the city last year, largely because it is in one of the best local school districts.
My family also taught me a lot outside the walls of the school. We traveled, went to national parks and museums, and had friends of different backgrounds and cultures. We read lots of books, did art projects, and listened to different types of music. Through my family and experiences I learned the importance of unconditional love, to celebrate differences, to hold out a hand when someone falls down, and the importance of both humor and humility. I learned the importance of prayer and the strength of God's love. I want to enrich my child's life with experiences that help teach these things too.
I am single and have put a lot of thought into adopting as a single parent. I am so loved and supported by so many. I know that there will be challenging times, but my amazing friends and family will be there to wrap their arms around us when we need a little extra help. I know that I am ready to share all that I have been given and all the love in my heart with a child.
You will always be an important and essential part of your child's life. I will tell him or her your story from the very beginning. I will share the huge, selfless gift of love that you gave by choosing adoption. I will tell the story of your strength. I will send pictures and letters so that you will always know how your child's story is unfolding. We can also connect through emails or visits, or whatever feels right to you.
Thank you for this remarkable gift that you are considering giving. Your child will always be so very loved.
