Why We Chose Adoption

Our Family

We have one daughter, Collins. She is an energetic, creative and caring 6-year-old who cannot wait to be a big sister!

It was common knowledge that we always wanted a large family. Even at our wedding it was joked about in more than one toast! Shawna grew up with one brother and one sister but her mom came from a family of six girls so there were lots of cousins. Everyone lived near each other so family gatherings were large and so much fun. Reid grew up as an only child and always wished he had siblings. Getting pregnant with Collins took longer than we expected, but we were so in love with Collins and our new role as parents we knew we wanted to do it all over again. Everyone told us that our second time getting pregnant would be easier. It wasn't.

We were diagnosed with "unexplained infertility" and tried medications, IUI and IVF. Shawna only became pregnant one other time but it ended in miscarriage. Throughout our infertility treatment we always talked about adoption and how we were both open to it. Then one day we both looked at each other and knew, no more medications. After talking to friends who have adopted and learning about the process we decided it was the right path for us. It felt like a weight being lifted and the joy and excitement about a new baby through adoption returned.

Our Leisure Time

An Evening Walk on the Beach

Living in Florida we love getting to take full advantage of the wonderful year round sunshine. We spend our time swimming, biking, going to the beach and exploring the nearby zoo and theme parks. In the summer a swim or quick trip to the beach after dinner is the perfect way to wind down. On weekends we have family movie nights on Fridays where phones are away and it's just time cuddling on the couch. Saturday and Sunday are spent outside exploring a new area, riding a rollercoaster at Disney, or learning about rockets at Kennedy Space Center. Reid's love of aerospace means we head to the beach to catch all the rocket launches.

You will often find us gathering with friends on the weekends for a BBQ or to celebrate holidays when we don't head out of town to spend with family. Our area is filled with a lot of transplant families, some of which we have know for years since we moved from the same area. They all have children so when we get together Collins and all the kids get to swim and play while we catch up with friends.

Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

Anniversary Trip

Shawna About Reid: Reid is such a funny, kind, respectful and loving person. He is always so supportive of our family and lets us know every day how much he appreciates us. He has such a positive attitude it is really contagious, it makes me believe in things I would normally never imagine. When we first started dating it was obvious he would be a wonderful father. He was like a big kid himself, running around and playing with our friends and families children. It continued with Collins, he loves to play monster with her or enthusiastically pretend he's a pony. They are partners in crime and adding another child onto the team will just add to the fun. He makes every day more fun.

Reid About Shawna: Shawna oozes compassion. She is truly the family's conscious. Shawna leads by example in what it means to think of others, to not judge a book by its cover, and to put others before one's self. Shawna is actively involved in Collins' education at school as a room mom and at home helping Collins with her studies. No matter what, Shawna is there for us. In times of troubled waters, it is Shawna's calm smooth voice that steadies the boat. What I love most about Shawna is that Collins is up growing to take after her. Shawna has so much love to give and I'm ecstatic to see Shawna continue to share that love with a growing family.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We built our house when we moved to the east coast of Florida a couple years ago. We have five bedrooms and 4.5 baths including a jack-and-jill bath Collins cannot wait to share with her sibling and a separate in-law suite so our parents and friends that don't live near can feel at home during their frequent visits. We spend most of our time at home outside, playing in the cul-de-sac or pool or eating and relaxing on the large lanai looking out onto our fenced in yard with views of the pond and walking path behind the house. It also is a great space for BBQs and pool parties with local friends. We love to take full advantage of time in the Florida sunshine.

Our fun-filled neighborhood has young families that love having neighborhood holiday parties, movie nights and mom or dad night outs. There are parks, walking paths, tennis/basketball courts and green space within a short walk. It is also right next to a wet lands preserve, prefect for our family bike rides. It is such a peaceful and loving environment.

We are also so close to the beach that a quick morning beach walk, an afternoon playing in the surf and sand or a evening picnic are a regular occurrence.

Our Extended Families

Reid & His Parents

We are exceedingly lucky to come from such strong, loving and supportive families. Despite the distance we both know we can count on our parents and extended family any time we need support and really treasure our quality time together. Both of our parents have adored becoming grandparents and are anxiously awaiting a new child to lavish their love on. Reid's parents live in Texas and we enjoy visits attending the state fair and exploring the area Reid grew up in. They also love to come visit and spend time in the sunshine going to amusement parks, the zoo and the nearby beach.

Shawna's Family

Shawna's mother lives in Chicago along with her brother, sister and large extended family. When going to visit on holidays or to cool off in the summer we love spending time at our large family gatherings. Thanksgiving is always our favorite because since we have such a large family we use a local indoor soccer facility with a large family room we can all gather in to eat followed by a friendly flag football game. Shawna's mother also loves to escape the cold winter up north to spend the season in the Florida sun giving us a taste of family close by in the winter.

From Us to You

Thank you for reading through our profile and getting to know our family. We can only imagine the uncertainty you feel facing these difficult decisions in front of you. Our hope is you find peace in your decision, whatever that may be and it is humbling to even be considered.

We, Shawna and Reid, know how important being a parent is and do not take that responsibility lightly. We have been married for over seven years, together over 13 years. Our relationship has always been built on love, communication and laughter, we are truly each other's best friend. When Collins came into our lives 6 years ago we were forever changed in the best of ways. She is a kind, friendly, energetic and creative child who has been the center of our lives and will be an amazing big sister, a roll she has anxiously been waiting to fill. We are thankful every day for our loving little family and the challenges, laughter and love family brings. But we know a piece is missing and after years dealing with infertility (as so many have) are so confident in our decision to complete our family through adoption.

We currently live in a fun, vibrant, and accepting community where we spend much of our time outside walking our dogs, spending time with friends, or swimming in the pool or at the beach. Our community contains great public schools, youth sports organizations, and parks for a growing family. It's amazing to see families with young children continue to arrive and contribute to its growth.

Our dream for our children is to grow up never doubting for a moment they are loved. That they understand the value of education, explore different facets about themselves, take a risk once in a while and find their passion in life but most importantly not to be afraid of making mistakes, that mistakes are how we learn. We hope to instill important values including compassion and kindness toward others and an understanding that honesty and openness are important in families and in life. We believe in dedication to ourselves and to each other. As a family we are stronger together and can overcome any obstacle. We reinforce these values every day.

We promise that if you choose us to parent your child they will always be loved unconditionally and they will know how much you loved them from the beginning. We will openly talk about how adoption is a part of our family story but know that it is their story to tell. It is important to us your child knows who they are, and they know the loved bestowed on them stretches from our family to yours. There is nothing more right in this world than more love. We welcome open communication through letters, photos, emails, calls and visits as we understand knowing your child is safe and happy is as important as your child knowing how much you love them.

Thank you again for taking the time to get to know us and we wish you peace and clarity in your decision.
