Todd & Jess
Thank you for considering us as potential parents to your child. We feel our role as parents has been our greatest gift, and it has brought us so much joy and love. We would be honored to share that joy and love through adoption. We know that this is an incredibly difficult decision for you, and we truly appreciate that you are taking the time to learn more about us.
What it Means to be Parents
Being a parent is best described as watching your heart walk around outside of yourself. While we have been best friends and loved each other for all of these years, we still could never imagine how it would feel to love our child. Once we became parents, we could not imagine our lives without Ryan in it.
This is a very rewarding and incredible job, but we would never pretend that it is without challenges as well. No matter how the day goes, we always look forward to bedtime stories and snuggles, and conversations that we share with our three year old.
What we enjoy most about being parents, is watching the world through our child's eyes. Witnessing his first experiences with anything is such a joy, and we cannot wait to experience that joy again through adoption. We are beyond grateful to hopefully have the opportunity to love and encourage another child on their journey in this life. We plan to help them navigate through this world and all of the adventures that we have dreamed about for the future.
We really enjoy being active and getting outside for hikes, exercise and exploring. When we go to a new city we like to take a run in the morning to see more of the neighborhoods and local spots that are so often overlooked. When we first got together, Jess could run about a mile. After all of these years, we have completed countless 5 and 10Ks and a half marathon together.
A typical day involves morning exercise followed by the park, library or activity class for Ryan afterwards. We do a lot of cooking at home, but we also enjoy going out as a family on the weekend, there are a lot of kid friendly places nearby.
We are so lucky that we enjoy good weather almost every day of the year. We love going for a hike and getting lunch together afterwards. The beach is always a fun weekend activity for us as well. Ryan spends time playing soccer, swimming, and running around with friends at the local parks and playgrounds.
Most days you will find us spending time doing something healthy and fun as a family. We are so excited to get our children into skiing, so that we can do that together too.
Why We Chose Adoption
We chose adoption to complete our family after several years of fertility struggle. We have experienced losses in the past, and have had many ups and downs along the way. Our significant "up" was the birth of our son, Ryan. He opened our hearts up in ways that we could never have imagined, and we are so grateful to be his parents.
Having both grown up with siblings, we always imagined our family with more than one child. For us, we feel that sharing a childhood with a sibling is one of the greatest gifts there is. And as our children get older, having that companionship and bond is so special. We discussed all of our options over the years, and we have always come back to adoption to complete our family.
Raising a child has been the greatest blessing in our lives. We would love to be able to give this gift of love and share this adventure with a child through adoption.
Our Extended Families
We are so fortunate to have incredible families who are supportive of our adoption journey. Our parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins are as excited as we are to welcome a new family member into all of our lives.
Jess's family lives in New York and we visit throughout the year. We enjoy exploring the beaches, museums and farms nearby. There is always something new to do with each visit, and it is pure joy to watch a child experience these places for the first time.
Todd's brother and wife live less than a mile away with their two children, and we love getting together with them as much as possible. Todd's parents live in North Carolina and have a lake house in the summer. Todd's sister and family live in DC, and we can't wait to visit all of the incredible museums there with all of our children together.
In the summer, we are able to travel to New York and then the lake, where we visit with our extended families and go to local parks, playgrounds, carnivals, races and just enjoy barbecues and leisure time with our loved ones. It is the highlight of our summer!
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a beach community in California. We are fortunate that we live on a quiet street, but we are also able to walk a short distance to several fun activities. We have a yard and patio that is perfect for drawing with chalk and riding bikes and scooters. Through raising our son, Ryan, we have come to discover the many parks, museum, pools, community events, etc. that are not only kid-friendly, but kid-welcoming nearby.
We have a wonderful network of friends with children who meet up regularly for play dates. We also have memberships at several museums and the zoo, and we are regular visitors. There are three parks within walking distance of our house that have a variety of play structures and huge lawns to run around on as well.
We enjoy hiking with our son, and we can't wait to take both our children on the trails surrounding our home. The beach also provides nearly year-round entertainment and fun.
There are activities held all over our town for children including puppet shows and musical performances, and we are regular visitors to the many libraries near our home. There are also several children's gyms that offer classes and activities for jumping and tumbling. Honestly, we wish there were more days in the week to enjoy everything there is for children in our incredible city.
From Us to You
We met while living in New York City in 2004, and we have been together ever since. We have had so many wonderful times since then, and we are so grateful to have each other. We truly believe that the most important thing in a marriage is that we bring out and encourage the best in each other, and we have made that our priority.
Currently, Todd is working as a Vice President of Finance, and he really enjoys his work. He has the opportunity to travel through work, and when the timing is right we can turn that into a family trip as well. Because Todd has lived in several countries and cities, travel has always been a fun and exciting opportunity for him. It has become a passion for our family because of his insight and experiences.
Jess worked as a RN for 4 years before completing her Master's and becoming a Nurse Practitioner. After working as a NP for 5 years, she decided to become a full-time mom. While she loved being able to care for and provide guidance to her patients, she has never been so fulfilled in her work as she is currently. The gift of staying home to spend time with our child is one she never takes for granted, and she approaches this job with the same level of dedication and heart that she put into all of her years of school and work.
Before our son Ryan was born, we had experienced two losses. We were beyond thrilled to welcome Ryan into this world, and we truly believe that he was meant to be in our lives just as we are meant to be his parents. After several more losses and two unsuccessful cycles of IVF, we are even more sure that there is another child destined to be in our family through adoption. We are so excited to be on this incredible journey, and we know that we will never take this opportunity for granted.
We are really looking forward to providing a loving home for your baby and completing our family through adoption. We believe that having a sibling is one of life's greatest gifts. Todd is the oldest of three, and Jess was the youngest of two. We both had incredible experiences of being teachers and role models to our siblings, and also learning from and looking up to them as well. Ryan is extremely caring towards his younger friends and cousins, and we know that he will be an incredible big brother. He has friends that have been adopted, and we use this to teach him about all the ways that make a family.
We have been thinking of you during this entire process, and look forward to the relationship that you will have with this baby and our family. We are happy to send email and letter updates with photos and stories, so that you may be involved in your child's life. We believe that it is important to know where you come from and encourage that identity in a child, and we would happily share anything we know about you and your family with your child. We will always let your child know that you made an incredibly selfless and courageous decision, and that will always be respected and appreciated by our family. We will also let your child know that you love them and that this gift was born out of that love.
Thank you for considering us as potential parents to your child. Thank you for considering Ryan as a big brother. We have been looking forward to expanding our family for so long, that words cannot express our gratitude for this opportunity. We know that this is an incredibly difficult decision, and we are sending all of our love and strength to you during this time.
