Doug & Katie
We are so grateful to you for reading our profile! We are a kind-hearted couple who enjoys each other's company (and our dog's!) very much and are looking for a child to pour our love into. We know this must be an incredibly hard decision for you, and we can guarantee that we will provide a caring, loving, and warm environment for a child. We have been together for 11 years and are ready to grow our family. Hope is alive in our hearts as we dream about all of the joy that a baby will bring to our lives.
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Hands down, our favorite vacation spot is Disney World! We have been going annually since 2010! Every year we make it down to Orlando at least once, sometimes more, to find Mickey and Minnie. Doug enjoys the adrenaline rush he receives from Tower of Terror, while Katie prefers walking around Epcot tasting food from around the world. We can be found eating our way through an ice cream sampler from Disney's Boardwalk, running to get to our next ride in Animal Kingdom, or kissing in front of the Cinderella castle for lifelong memories in a photo. We are excited to continue this tradition with a child and will look forward to tamer rides such as the Dumbo attraction, Winnie the Pooh, and the ever classic Teacups. We are already looking forward to our next trip!
Our Leisure Time
Katie has many hobbies that she enjoys doing when she's not teaching. In the winter, Katie can be found cuddled up under blankets in her reading nook reading a plethora of books or crocheting a blanket. She also enjoys jazzercising which includes dancing cardio and weightlifting. Sometimes when she's home, she throws a dance party for herself and her dog, Rosie. She can be found singing NSYNC lyrics or India Arie's tunes depending on her mood that day. Furthermore, Katie enjoys meeting up with her girlfriends from work, her Jazzercise studio, and her community. She is a rather social person and benefits from time alone as well.
Doug loves travel planning - he is always planning elaborate itineraries for the next vacation and, of course, ensuring that desserts are always nearby! He also designs and creates his own Lego creations of cities, trains, and vacation places (such as Disney World, one of our favorites). He can get easily lost in researching trains in his free time as well as the latest Penn State sports football or basketball recruiting news. On Saturdays in the fall, he can be heard rooting for Penn State football loud and clear! He enjoys messaging with his good friends from college on those days about the games and reconnects so easily that way each year.
Katie teaches many different topics as a psychology lecturer, and one of those topics is multiculturalism. It's not enough to be tolerant of another person's differences, and she teaches that celebrating how we are all different is a wonderful and fulfilling practice! We both respect, appreciate, and celebrate racial, cultural, and religious diversity in everyday life. Katie's mother escaped from communist rule in Hungary when she was just a baby traveling with her parents. Katie therefore was raised in a culturally sensitive house where she loved learning about her Hungarian and Irish heritage. Doug's grandmother also escaped from Hungary around the same time that Katie's mother did, and so he had similar conversations in his own family where he learned to value different backgrounds and philosophies. Both Doug and Katie believe in a world where cultural diversity is respected and celebrated in daily life, and they expect to teach their child the same world view.
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a quiet, safe community with two parks very close by. Our home is a spacious three bedroom townhome in a neighborhood where we love to walk. We have many memories taking walks with our dog, little Rosie, along a beautiful greenway within walking distance of our home. It's especially beautiful in the fall with the changing leaves!
Our community is filled with young families and frequently hosts family friendly events throughout the year. Last year, we attended a fall festival where we made some yummy caramel apples, ate some delicious local pizza, and even got a family photo to remember all the fun!
Our community has a wonderful, diverse school nearby as well as two beautiful parks near our home.
We are located in a large city with tons of activities geared towards children ranging from science museums to aquariums. Plus, an escape to the mountains or an escape to the beach is just a couple hours away!
Our Extended Families
Both of our families are absolutely ecstatic to meet our future child! Everyone frequently asks for updates on the adoption and are thrilled to become grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Katie is from a tight knit family that holds elaborate, annual get-togethers ranging from beach vacations to trips to historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Her parents, her two sisters, and brother are all gift givers and love sending care packages to one another. Everyone is in constant communication, often texting or calling whether to just say hi or to support one another through tough times.
Doug comes from a selfless, good-natured family. His parents and two brothers all love playing sports, and can be found having a baseball catch, shooting hoops, or playing in the pool. Just like Katie's side, Doug's family also values time with family and constantly looks for ways to get together. Doug's oldest brother also has two beautiful, amazing children who are anxiously awaiting a cousin.
From Us to You
There's so much to say, where to begin? First off, we want to give a BIG thank you for taking the time to learn about our family and our values. We know this may be a difficult time in your life, and we are inspired by the strength, courage, and love that you are showing by considering an adoption plan. We are here to support you and would love to hear from you. Through this letter and through our photos, we hope that you can see our goofiness, our commitment to diversity and values, and our dream to welcome a child into our family.
We met in 2005 in college at Penn State. Our love story began as a cheesy romantic comedy; we started out as friends and quickly developed crushes ... but we were both too shy to admit it. Nonetheless, as both of us later admitted, we put on our best flirting whether it was a three hour long lunch where neither of us wanted to leave or trying to show off our best moves while swing dancing together. Finally, Doug worked up the courage to ask Katie out while she was studying abroad in Paris, she said 'Yes,' and the rest is history!
In 2017, we adopted a little fur baby, Rosie. She is both sassy and sweet-- she loves stealing our shoes as a joke and she equally enjoys cuddling on the couch with us on a chill Friday night. We enjoy taking her on walks on a greenway right near our home. We love her so much and consider her family.
We are excited to grow our family and have always wanted to adopt. We are a loving family that values diversity, education, and happiness.
We welcome diversity into our family! We have always desired to raise children from diverse backgrounds and we will enjoy and celebrate our diversity and similarities as a family. Throughout her ten years of teaching, Katie has taught in diverse classrooms and has witnessed the importance of diversity in education and in society; as a Psychology teacher, she also teaches about the importance of celebrating diversity through studies in multiculturalism. Doug has also witnessed the integral role of diversity and multiculturalism in our communities through his job and through his volunteer efforts. Our diverse network of colleagues, friends, and students are incredibly excited for us to welcome a baby, and we are excited to share different cultural ideals, traditions, and values with our future child.
We both highly value education as well. Katie has always had a passion for teaching and learning. We would like our future child to receive a great education in a diverse school and we welcome the opportunity for the child to be immersed in other languages and to learn about other cultures.
We also value well-being. Katie teaches Positive Psychology, the study of a person's search for satisfaction, fulfillment, and well-being in life. Doug lives in accordance with research from Positive Psychology and regularly applies the results from research to his own life. We hope to share these teachings with our future child so that they can live a happy, healthy life as well.
Yet, above all, we value kindness and hope to bestow that upon our future child.
Inclusion is also something we greatly admire, and we value the role that you will play in our journey. We are happy to send photos, letters, and emails. We plan on being open and honest with our child in regard to adoption and will ensure that we share with him or her the courage and love you have expressed in making this decision.
