Letha & Lisa
We believe that blood does not make a family, love does! We are a loving, silly, fun and adventurous couple and were blessed once through adoption. We have an abundance of love to give your child and cannot wait to grow our family through adoption. We appreciate you reading our profile and considering us for the honor of adopting your child.
Adoption in Our Lives
A few years ago our family was blessed by adoption with our nephew, Aiden. When Lisa's brother and sister-in-law announced the addition of a new family member, we were so excited and proud to welcome Aiden to the family. He was welcomed with open arms by family and friends and he has been a joy and blessing. One of the aspects we admire and love about our family and extended family is the unconditional love and acceptance for any child.
When we decided to start our own family, we first became foster parents. We realized that there were children who needed stable and loving homes and we knew we could provide that. Several months after becoming licensed foster parents, a three day old infant was placed with us. We instantly became parents and we loved it! Our desire to become parents only increased after having our foster son for four months. The experience of parenting our foster son led us to adoption.
We adopted our daughter, Charlotte, in September 2017 and being parents has been the most rewarding, life-changing, happiest experience ever. We both had siblings growing up and are still very close with them. We think it is important for Charlotte to also have a brother or sister to share life's experiences with.
Our lifestyle can be described as family-oriented, fun-filled and casual. While we both work hard, we have found the balance between work and home which allows us to spend quality time with our daughter, family and friends.
We love being with our daughter. It is important for each of us to have one-on-one time with her every day. Whether we are eating dinner together, reading books or snuggling at bedtime, family time is a priority for us. All three of us love to be outside and, weather permitting, we are outside walking, riding bikes, swimming in the pool, playing at the park or watching movies in the backyard. We are so looking forward to adding another child into our family to share our love and family values.
It is important to us that we keep connected with family and friends. Most weekends find us with a household of friends or family smoking something in the smoker, going to a musical, playing putt putt golf or anything to simply keep connected.
Traveling together is an important part of our lives and we explore as much of the United States and abroad as we can. We try to go to the beach each winter and have traveled to Italy, Great Britain and numerous tropical islands. Traveling together keeps us connected as a family and seeing the world through a child's eyes provides us a whole new perspective!
Our Family Traditions
Both of our families are strong on traditions and we can't wait to share them with another child. Christmas is one of our favorite holidays and we love decorating the inside and outside of our home. From a snowman Christmas tree, to stockings for all (including the dogs), it is truly a festive time. A couple of weeks before Christmas Letha and her sisters get together for an entire day of baking Christmas cookies. One year we baked over 1800 cookies! The children love to help and it is an event that we look forward to every year. Then, on Christmas Eve we unwrap matching Christmas pajamas for every member of the family - even the dogs!
Lisa's family has a "secret" ice cream recipe and homemade ice cream is served at all major family events. Making the ice cream is a two-day process and is entrusted only to those who can keep the secret.
We have so many other traditions we hope to share with your child - hunting morel mushrooms, sporting events - St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Indianapolis Colts football and University of Illinois football, basketball and volleyball, arts/crafts festivals in the fall, and special meals at all of the holidays. We can't wait to start even more traditions as our family grows!
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a smaller community in Illinois with one of the top school systems in the state and are close to a major university town where we work and go to sporting events and cultural activities.
Our home sits on about one acre and backs up to a woods which brings lots of wildlife including birds, wild turkeys and deer. We love being outside and this is where you will find us most of the summer. We have a covered back porch where we cook out, watch TV and play. We recently installed an in-ground pool and this provides hours of fun.
We chose our neighborhood because it has tons of children, a playground, and walking/biking paths. On our street alone there are 19 children under the age of nine - with more on the way! We have a neighborhood 4th of July parade where everyone decorates their wagons, battery operated cars, scooters, and bikes and then parade through the neighborhood playing music, celebrating and showing off their decorated creations. Later in the day the neighboring park holds an awesome fireworks show which we can watch from our front yard.
Our Extended Families
We are so lucky with the families we are blessed with! Lisa's family is small but very close knit. She has one brother and three nephews/niece. Letha's family is really large! She has 4 sisters, 1 brother and 11 nieces/nephews! What is awesome is that all family members live within 3 hours of us. Our prime babysitter is Letha's younger sister who lives only a few minutes away.
Our parents and siblings are some of our best friends and we enjoy spending time with them. Most weekends involve some time with our extended family. Whether it is going out for dinner, playing board games or just visiting, we treasure the time spent with them.
Given the size of Letha's family, holidays are loud and fun! Each December three of Letha's sisters join us and we bake cookies all day long. The most we made in one day was over 1800! Lisa's family has a tradition of making home made ice cream and no holiday is complete without a bowl or two.
We are so fortunate to have loving and supportive families who believe that family isn't defined by blood but, rather, by love. Adoption has helped make our family. Not only were we blessed with our daughter through adoption, one of our nephews is also adopted. Our families completely support our decision to build our family through adoption and your child will never doubt that our family loves him or her unconditionally.
From Us to You
Hello. We are Letha and Lisa and we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to learn about us and consider us for the honor of adopting your child. We cannot begin to comprehend what you are going through and how you must feel but we are humbled by the opportunity to share this journey with you. As you think about choosing an adoptive family, we want you to know as much about us as you can.
We met during college and married in 2015. Loving, silly, fun, competitive and adventurous best describe our relationship. We are truly a team. We first became parents through foster care and it quickly became clear that our family would not be complete without children. Adoption was a natural choice for us because we feel that blood does not make a family, love does. In September 2017 we were blessed with our daughter, Charlotte "Charli" through adoption. We have so much love to give and cannot wait to add another member to our family.
We live in a smaller community in Illinois but near a major university town. The university affords us opportunities to attend sporting events and cultural activities while our home town gives us that smaller, close-knit feel. We chose our home town because it has one of the leading school systems in Illinois. Our neighborhood is full of children of all ages! The neighborhood has a playground, frisbee golf course, and walking/biking paths. Our house has a finished basement that has become the playroom - complete with a children's roller coaster and a ball pit. We have three small dogs - Tilly, Reese and Roe.
Our daughter, Charlotte, has an outgoing personality with a huge sense of adventure. She is very social, kind-hearted and loves being outdoors. Because we both grew up with siblings, we know how important it is to have someone to share laughs and experiences. Charli is great with other children and we know that she would love to have a brother or sister to share her toys, the puppies, and mischief!
Many weekends involve spending time with family members or friends. Our parents, six siblings, and fourteen nieces/nephews live less than three hours away. We get together for cookouts, special events, shopping, cookie baking and spending time together. We also like to go to the zoo and children's museums. Sports played a big role in Lisa's life and we enjoy spectator sports of all kinds but ensure that each year we make it to some professional baseball and football games. We love to travel and enjoy exploring the United States and abroad. We would love to pack another Dora the Explorer or Paw Patrol bag to share our adventures with your son or daughter.
On most evenings and weekends you can find us outdoors doing DIY projects. Lisa would love to have another "little helper" to help fill her red radio flyer wagon with tools, flowers and garden plants. If your child is anything like Lisa, they will both come into the house happy and dirty. Letha looks forward to sharing her love of reading, sports, singing and dancing.
We are committed to providing diverse opportunities for your child. We are prepared to put your child's academic, social and/or extracurricular needs first. We promise to encourage your child to explore their desires, goals, wishes and help them grow into the person they want to be. We will raise your child in an environment where they always know they are loved more than anything.
We are excited to learn more about you and what your hopes and dreams are for your child. We are open to exchanging letters, emails, pictures and videos and would welcome the opportunity to meet you before your child's birth. Adoption has blessed our family and we are truly grateful. Please know that your child will understand he/she is an amazing gift and the decision you made was out of love. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us.
