T.J. & Adrienne
We understand and respect how hard this decision has been for you and feel incredibly grateful you're taking the time to read our profile. Thank you. We're excited to expand our family through adoption and want more than anything to provide a safe and loving environment for a child. We truly appreciate your consideration and look forward to the road ahead.
We try to make the most of each and every day. We try to experience as much as possible so we're up for almost anything. We're both super organized people so we're always in the process of planning our next adventure. We prioritize spending time with friends and family, whether it takes us to parks, BBQs, or the local renaissance festival. We love breaking out of our comfort zone, like meeting TJ's parents in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for an ultra-competitive Amish quilt auction. We travel as much as our jobs (and bank account) permit. We love spending time at national parks, sporting events, family functions, and the beach.
We both know our life will change once we expand our family, and are so eager to experience life with someone new! We're excited to tie-dying shirts and lounge on blankets in the backyard, pointing up at the stars. We think traveling with a child will help them better understand the world and other cultures. We both have things we want to teach and experience with a child. Adrienne is excited to be a scout troop leader and to help them learn to swim, and TJ is excited to explain the rules of ice hockey and show a child how to grow plants. We'll cherish each exciting day we spend as a family!
Why We Chose Adoption
Early in our relationship, we talked about how, when the time was right, we wanted to expand our family. We discussed having children, and also agreed that we were open to including adoption in our life plan. After our marriage, we bought a house and added a rambunctious puppy to the family. Then the time felt right to bring a child into the world. We struggled for a few years to have a child on our own, which led to three more years of intense fertility treatment. Exhausted but not deterred, we realized this wasn’t the path we were meant to take. With the enthusiastic support of our friends and family we find ourselves here, overflowing with love, and hoping to grow our family through adoption.
While we wait to start our family we often daydream about our future. The dog’s leash getting tangled in the stroller on afternoon walks, birthday party smash cakes, the first day of school, weekend mornings sipping hot coffee while watching youth sports...we’re so excited to experience all these moments and for our lives to change forever.
Favorite Vacation Spot
We love nature and most of our vacations involve the outdoors. We travel to the Appalachian Mountains at least twice a year. It's a short drive from our home and allows us long weekends of hiking, watching wildlife, and relaxing in the woods. TJ loves to pick wild blueberries for Adrienne’s famous campfire pancakes.
We recently spent a week in Yellowstone National Park taking in all the natural wonders. We took a ton of photos of elk, bear, and the unbelievable landscape. We even had a wild buffalo sleeping next to our cabin! Adrienne purchased a tour book after the trip so we can return and see what we missed.
Adrienne is a certified water lover so we try to make it to the ocean or lake at least once a year. We like to swim, snorkel, and take in sunsets. We want a child to experience everything the great outdoors has to offer.
Our Extended Families
We are fortunate to live between both of our immediate families. This makes our home a convenient and well-visited location for family gatherings.
During the holidays we typically split time between our families’ homes. We usually spend Thanksgiving with Adrienne's family. Her parents prepare a mind-boggling amount of food while extended family catches up and watches football. For Christmas, we usually spend time with TJ's family. They have many Christmas traditions including making Belgian Lukken cookies and homemade Italian sausage, watching the "National Lampoon Christmas Vacation” movie, and unwrapping presents Christmas morning while still wearing our pajamas.
In our family, gatherings are an excuse to wildly entertain the kids. For our niece's fourth birthday her big surprise was a petting zoo with pony rides. She was so excited and rode for an hour straight! We’re so grateful that we were there to share these amazing memories with her.
Our families are very excited to have a child join the family. Everyone has been so supportive and ready to join in raising a child together.
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in Northern Virginia (suburbs of Washington, DC). Our 2,000+ square foot, brick, raised-rambler home has five bedrooms and three full baths. The basement is sprawling and completely carpeted for kids and pets to run around. A child can easily walk to the elementary, middle, and high schools from our home. You can even hear the loudspeakers and crowd cheering from football games! The property is nearly half an acre of landscaped gardens, grass, and 150-year-old white oak trees. Our neighborhood is packed with children (literally hundreds). Every day you see kids running around, biking, and just having a good time. A couple of times a year we shut down the neighborhood streets and throw a huge block party. Our house really shines come Halloween—we go over the top with decorations, costumes, and full-size candy bars!
We have a friendly relationship with our neighbors. TJ is well known throughout the neighborhood because of his frequent dog walks and impromptu sidewalk conversations. Each year we grow thousands of vegetable seedlings and give them away to friends, coworkers, and neighbors. The extra plants are donated to the local elementary school where the students plant them in their “learning garden.”
From Us to You
Hello! Our names are Adrienne and TJ. Thank you for taking a moment to read our profile as you navigate your way through this difficult decision. This is an incredibly important decision to make and we’re honored that you would consider choosing us to raise your child as our own in a loving and compassionate home.
We met and started dating 12 years ago while working together and have been married for almost 8 years. We are a dedicated, loving, couple who enjoy spending time together and are eager to expand our family through adoption.
They say that opposites attract and that couldn’t be more true of us. Adrienne is laid back, quiet, and an expert relaxer. On the weekend, you'll likely find her reading a book curled up in front of the fireplace or watching a movie. TJ, on the other hand, wakes up at 6 a.m. like he’s been shot from a cannon. You’ll find him walking the dog, tending to his ever-expanding garden, or chatting up neighbors on the street. While our personalities are very different we do share an unwavering desire to spread kindness and positivity into the world. Our number one goal as parents is to raise a child who is generous, kind, and loving.
These values also apply to our careers. We’re proud to work for employers that help make a positive difference in the world. Since we’re both in the video production industry it’s fair to say the home movies are going to be a little over the top!
Adrienne works for PBS at their headquarters. She makes marketing videos to promote upcoming programming that airs on PBS. PBS is very family-friendly and can offer flexible working hours which makes raising a child easier. Adrienne also has access to great “PBS Kids” education and learning programs.
TJ works for the U.S. Department of State as a video producer and editor. He occasionally has the opportunity to travel overseas where he creates videos to advance world-wide human rights, gender equality, environmental stewardship, education, and democracy. He has an extremely flexible work schedule, often working at home, and is able to set his own hours.
We expect to be in an open adoption and would be very happy to provide photos, videos, emails, phone calls, and in-person visits if desired. It’s our goal to facilitate whatever relationship you wish to have with the child. We believe maintaining open communication is important so the child and birth parents can reach out with any questions they might have as the years pass. We want what is best for this child and that includes being open and honest about how they became a part of our family. We want to assure the child that this decision was not taken lightly and hope you view entrusting us to raise this child as additional proof of how very much you care.
Thank you for reading our profile. We hope we have expressed how eager and excited we are to adopt a child. We cannot wait to build a beautiful and loving relationship with not only the child, but also with you.
