Thank you for taking the time to read our profile. We are a fun-loving family of 3 who enjoys the outdoors and making lasting memories together. We truly admire your courage in considering adoption and hope that you find a family that is the best fit for you. We promise to love your child unconditionally and instill kindness, compassion, and curiosity about the world. We hope you'll consider us!
Why We Chose Adoption
We always knew we wanted to grow our family through adoption. Since our first dates, we talked about having a large, silly family who would make lasting traditions. We didn’t know life would pull us in the direction of adoption so soon. When our biological son, Julian, was born, we noticed he wasn't meeting developmental milestones. After years of testing, we found out he has a rare genetic disorder which primarily affects his speech. He has excelled at overcoming challenges, using ASL and a tablet to communicate, and working hard to learn and grow along with his peers.
We are blessed to have a healthy and happy kiddo who loves riding his therapy pony and all things Daniel Tiger. Julian is loving, smart, social, and adores interacting with other children. If anything, his disorder has made him even more cheerful and affectionate. We know that he would thrive as a big brother. As a family, we love making every day special. We celebrate “cake day” on the 11th each month for our anniversary, and love having family pizza and movie nights.
As parents of a child with special needs, we have learned how to be fierce advocates for our child. We know that we will nurture a diverse and inclusive family that appreciates others for all their beautiful differences. We have provided our son with everything he needs for success, and we will show the same fierce support to all our children.
In our home, we strive to accept and celebrate all cultures and to teach our children to do the same. We surround ourselves with diverse books, shows, music, and friends. We are open to a transracial adoption, and we are dedicated to thoughtfully and purposefully building a diverse community of support around our family. We believe that talking openly about the beautiful diversity of races and cultures that exists in the world helps children to not only appreciate differences but to advocate for a more equal society as they grow up.
We're are excited to share the cultural traditions of our own extended families, such as sitting around the table making tamales at Christmas in Ohio, or celebrating the start of summer with a low country boil in Pop's backyard. Our travels throughout Latin America and Europe have certainly influenced us to become a globally minded family. We also recognize that we have been privileged in many ways, and feel that it is our civic responsibility to give back to those who find themselves in marginalized positions.
Fun Facts About Us:
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a beautiful new home in an established suburban neighborhood with many diverse families. Many of our neighbors are young couples with small children. Our house has 4 bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms. We have a large bonus/playroom where our son loves to make a mess! Our favorite room is our kitchen because it has a huge open island that is the perfect place for all our family and friends to gather when they come over.
Our neighborhood has hilly tree-lined streets for family bike rides, an awesome neighborhood pool and playground, and even a beloved neighborhood restaurant in the center square. A social committee plans lots of fun events for families such as an annual Easter egg hunt, neighborhood 5K, and summer luau at the pool.
Within a few minutes, there is an exceptional interactive children's museum (to which we have a family membership), several expansive parks and greenways, and an inviting open-air shopping center with live music and yummy restaurants. Our children will most likely attend the Charter school where Melissa works, which is one of the best schools in the state. It's also located only three minutes from our house!
Our Extended Families
We both come from large blended families with many fun traditions. Melissa's parents, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins live close by in a neighboring town. We celebrate nearly every holiday and birthday with a large family gathering and some good southern BBQ. Our favorite traditions are the annual egg-dyeing party and pumpkin-carving contest. Steven is quite the artist and almost always wins!
Melissa has three sisters, two of which have young children, so there are many cousins to play with. Each summer, we take the "cousin crew" on a big family vacation to a new place. Recently we enjoyed family adventures in scenic Colorado Springs, quaint Maggie Valley, North Carolina, and friendly Arlington, Texas.
Steven's parents also live 30 minutes from us and frequently enjoy Fridays off with our son, Julian. Steven's younger brother lives a few hours away, and he has many extended family members in Ohio. We typically visit Steven's grandparents, aunts, and uncles in Ohio once or twice per year.
We are truly blessed to have such a strong family support system. There are many grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, and uncles, ready to welcome a new child into the family and lavish them with love and affection.
From Us to You
We truly appreciate and respect that you are considering adoption. Whether you choose to contact us or not, we hope that you experience a beautiful story of resilience and a lifelong family connection through this process.
We met 10 years ago and have been happily married for five wonderful years. We always talked about adopting at some point in the future, because adoption has touched both of our families in a tremendous way. After a traumatic experience with our first biological birth, we knew that we were meant to grow our family through adoption.
Melissa is a high school Spanish teacher, and loves experiencing other cultures through travel, food, and music. She also has a passion for photography, videography, and graphic design. Steven works as a Sales Manager for an industrial automation company. He works with machinery that paints doors, siding, car parts, and pretty much anything else! Steven has the opportunity to travel at times for work, especially to Italy and Germany. We hope to take advantage of these travel opportunities as a family one day.
We have a wonderful 3-year-old son, Julian, who enjoys Daniel Tiger, sign language, and riding his therapy horse, Sammy. Due to a neuromuscular genetic disorder, Julian has some mild developmental delays. However, he is very silly and affectionate and would absolutely adore a sibling to grow up with. We believe that siblings are precious and want to continue to grow our family and nurture lifelong friendships amongst our children.
We have two laid-back dogs, Avery and Zoie. They are extremely friendly with children. In fact, they hardly bat an eye when our son loves on them. We love spending time outdoors: taking long walks through the neighborhood, hiking, biking, and day trips with our families. We actually met at a rock climbing gym!
Our friends would describe us as a patient, compassionate, easygoing, and family-oriented. We are Christian, and believe strongly in loving our neighbor and teaching our children to do the same. Melissa's job as a teacher affords us a lot of connections to community organizations, and we have led a few groups of students to rural Guatemala to install stoves and water purifiers for families in need. These experiences are some of the most meaningful that we have had as a couple, and we hope to model a continued dedicated to service for our children.
We admire your courage and strength in considering this path for your child. You will forever be our hero for giving us the opportunity to welcome him/her into our home with open arms and happy hearts. We promise that we will always do the following:
We may never understand your pain and grief, but please know that we will be so grateful for your sacrifice and selflessness. We already have so much love and respect for you and the difficult decision that you have to make. You will always have a special place in our lives, and we will forever be indebted to you for this beautiful gift.
With warm hugs and hope for the future,
Steven & Melissa
