Our Lifestyle

Hiking With Friends

We are an active couple. Even though we think we slow down on the weekends, we both have a knack for making last minute plans. Our Saturdays are usually filled with errands, maybe some yoga, visiting friends and the occasional home improvement. Sundays we often have dinner with the family or squeeze in a movie night.

During most weekdays, you can find us working our 9 to 5s (either in the office or from home). We both work in the online/tech industry and are fortunate to have flexible schedules. We have two beautiful dogs whom we spoil way too much. A couple of times a week they spend the day at dog camp, and when they're home alone they get a visit from their favorite dog walker. In the evenings we make time to visit family, get some exercise, or just unwind at home with our dogs and some Netflix.

When we carve out time we love to travel. Most of our trips include some form of historical sightseeing, hiking or meal planning (we definitely plan our itinerary around food). We also have a camper that we take on road trips to different state parks. It's been a great way to disconnect, discover new parts of the country - and the dogs like to come too.

Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

At a Friend's Wedding

Alex is smart, sincere and honest to a fault. Alex has the ability to see the best in everyone, even when they are at their worst. He's the person you complain to about a lousy day at work and his silence makes you re-evaluate your perception of what is important.

One of his many talents is his cooking. This is only made better by his envious green thumb. We have a beautiful raised bed in our yard where he grows vegetables to use in his dishes.

When Alex is with his niece, nephews and godchildren he turns into a kid himself - seeing things from their perspective, empathizing and communicating with them in a way that's hard to replicate as an adult. He's thoughtful, kind and patient. Alex will be an amazing father.

Denise is a determined, creative and kind problem solver. Her attitude has an underlying humor that is infectious - always seeing the positive in any situation and keeping the mood light-hearted. Her determination and creativity has led her to publish a few illustrative books regarding Miami-Cuban culture that has gained quite a loyal following across the United States.

Denise's interactions with children are both fun and informative typically revolving around various art projects and outdoor excursions such as going to the beach. One day, she is going to be a fantastic mother.

What Made Us Who We Are Today

Alex comes from two intelligent and hard working parents. His mother was an advertising executive in an era where most women were still struggling to come out of their husband's shadow. His father, a warm, charismatic, numbers guy, has an impressive aptitude for historical facts. He encourages scholastics, persistence, respect and family above all else. A shy child, Alex was a huge fan of comic books, movies and sports. After moving to Florida as a teenager, he came out of his shell, embraced the outdoors and cultivated new life-long friendships.

Denise was raised by her mother and grandparents. She didn't have much of a relationship with her father after her parents' divorce. Denise's mother refused to provide a life for her that was any different from someone with two parents. She worked a full-time job while getting her college degree at night. Her grandmother learned to drive just to be able to help take care of her. Denise is undoubtably a product of brave, intrepid and strong women. Denise moved away for grad school and spent close to 10 yrs in New York City. This is where she says she really learned to grow up.

Our lives may have started out quite different, but our paths led us to each other. Alex encourages Denise to feed her entrepreneurial spirit. Denise has fully embraced the outdoor life and Star Wars.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We have lived in our Florida home for over five years now and absolutely love it.

We have a charming two bedroom Spanish-style house with an open floor plan and a big back yard. Most of the action takes place in our family room, the heart of the house. The large comfy couches and sun filled space lends itself to movie nights, puppy playtime, and endless conversations with family and friends.

We enjoy how walkable the neighborhood is, from our local butcher shop (yes, that actually still exists here) to the very necessary corner Starbucks. We also have a few friends in the neighborhood who we visit for doggy playdates and barbecues.

Schools are abundant, as are the activities. The town has a recreation center, golf course, swimming pool, public parks, monthly street fairs, and weekend farmers markets.

But what really sets it apart is its diversity. We hear Spanish, Creole, English and Hebrew just about everywhere. Providing children with a culture-rich environment, filled with openness, empathy and warmth is of utmost importance to us.

Our Extended Families

Denise's Family

Small but mighty is how we describe our family.

On Denise's side we have her mom and grandparents. They live less than 20 minutes away. We get together with her mom for dinner and DIY projects. Her Abuelos (that's Spanish for grandparents) live there too. They're both over 90 years old but you would never know it. Her grandmother sings in the church choir and takes pilates at the senior center. Meanwhile her grandfather walks over a mile a day in search of the perfect loaf of Cuban bread.

With Alex's Parents & Denise's Mom

On the weekends the whole crew gets together at Alex's parents house for Sunday dinner. His dad loves to BBQ and make his famous Paella. His mom spoils us with Spanish tapas and is always the most attentive host. This is one of our favorite traditions, catching up while sitting outside by the pool with family and friends.

Alex also has an older brother who lives in New Jersey with his wife and kids. Only a short flight away, we visit often throughout the year. During our trips you can usually find us huddled outside around a campfire or cheering on our niece and nephews at one of their many sporting events.

Everyone is very excited and supportive about our adoption plans. Family is everything to us and we can't wait to expand it with our own little addition.

From Us to You

This has to be one of the most difficult things we have ever had to write. How do you explain to someone you've never met, the love you have for someone who doesn't even exist yet? How do we show you gratitude for something that you probably wish you didn't have to do? And how do we assure you that we will be the best parents to your child, when we've never been parents before?

But here we are. The truth is, we don't have all the answers. We're just a loving couple who wants to start a family. We are two people who want nothing more than to share our lives with a child. We want to teach them, to protect them, to help them grow in an environment of warmth and compassion, filled with family and friends.

As individuals we started out pretty differently. Alex's parents are from Spain and Cuba. His father's family immigrated in 1959 shortly after the Cuban revolution. His mother's family left Spain around the same time and came through Ellis Island, where they made a home for themselves in New Jersey. Alex grew up in New Jersey with his parents, an older brother, surrounded by extended family. They eventually moved to Florida where Alex fell in love with the culture, the outdoors, music and cooking.

Denise's family is also from Cuba. They immigrated to Florida in the mid 1960s where they found comfort among so many others like them, people trying to start over. Denise grew up in Florida with her mother and grandparents. She lost touch with her father after her parents' divorce when she was 6. Denise eventually moved to New York City after college. She's artistic and methodical. She loves DIY projects and is always trying to start her own business.

Eventually our wayward paths led us to each other. Now we live and work in Florida with our two dogs and a fish named Princess, who we got as a Christmas present from our 5-year-old godchild.

Being Cuban and Spanish, we innately incorporate our culture into our everyday lives. You'll find us sharing morning "cafecitos" on the couch, listening to some Celia Cruz in the background or cooking up Alex's famous Spanish tortilla in the kitchen. We take a lot of pride in growing up as Americans, as well as sharing our Hispanic culture. The two languages primarily spoken in our home are English and Spanish.

These are just a few anecdotes about us. But we want you to know who we are, as much as we want to know more about you. We want our child to know where they came from. We want them to be proud and to feel fortunate at how loved they are. We promise to tell them about what a selfless decision their birth parents made so that they could have a better life. We promise to reassure you of your decision through photos and letters. And we promise to help keep you in your child's heart throughout every "first," from their first day of pre-school to their first day of college.

Thank you for getting to know us through these (not so) brief paragraphs. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to be those parents, like you, who would do anything for their child. Whatever you decide, trust that your decision is the right one.
