Our Leisure Time

Finishing the St. Jude's Half Marathon

We have many hobbies, including checking out new restaurants, listening to music, reading and going to sports games. However, the two hobbies that we probably spend the most time doing are cooking and running.

We both love to cook! We view making and eating meals as a way to spend quality time as a family. We have even taken a few cooking classes together. During the week, our meals tend to be healthy and simple. However, on the weekends, we often try new recipes. Our favorite meal to make is Sunday dinner. Most recently, we made Ryan's great grandmother's Italian "sugo" (tomato meat sauce) and pasta from scratch. We love ending our weekend by making and eating a home-cooked meal together.

Another one of our hobbies is running. We are grateful to live near some beautiful parks and trails, which are perfect for walks and runs. In the time that we have been together as a couple, we have run three half-marathons. Our most recent half-marathon was organized by St. Jude Children's Hospital and in addition to running the race, we raised money for St. Jude. We enjoyed the experience of running and supporting a charity so much that Ryan is now inspired to run his first full marathon with St. Jude. We are looking forward to continuing our active lifestyle as a family.

Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

Dressed Up For a Wedding

Ryan About Emily: Emily is one of the kindest, most nurturing people I know. Many of her friends and family come to her when they have a problem because she takes the time to listen and provide great advice. Also, Emily is a planner and very organized. Often times, she is the one who plans our family vacations because she loves researching and figuring out every detail. The quality I love the most about Emily is her thoughtfulness. She is always putting in extra effort to make sure people feel appreciated. Examples of this include sending a text to friend out of the blue to check-in; spending extra time picking out a gift for a family member to ensure it is the perfect present; or making me a birthday cake from scratch. This child will benefit from having a mother with such a loving personality.

Emily About Ryan: One of the first things that I noticed about Ryan is his zest for life. He is always living life to the fullest and his fun-loving attitude and positivity rubs off on everyone around him. Also, Ryan is a teacher by nature. He loves explaining how things work and he does it in a patient and understanding way. It is because of these qualities that Ryan will make a great dad. He will be the type of parent that volunteers to be the soccer coach or comes home early from work to help with a science fair project.

Our Favorite Vacation Spot

Enjoying a Day at the Beach

We absolutely love to travel! Since we have been together, we have traveled all over the United States and we have been on two international trips (Bahamas and Italy). We are excited to continue traveling as a family once we become parents and we cannot wait to see the world through this child's eyes.

Last year, we took a trip to the Florida gulf shore beaches for the first time, and we loved it! The beaches are gorgeous and there are so many restaurants and fun activities. Both of us grew up going on regular beach trips so we plan to make this an annual vacation spot. We are excited to experience the beach with this child – building sandcastles, swimming in the ocean, biking around the beach towns as a family and getting homemade ice cream from our favorite local place!

Also, we love to take weekend trips to the mountains as we both like to hike and spend time in nature. We consider ourselves lucky that there are a few mountain ranges relatively close to us. We take advantage of this by spending at least one weekend every year at a cabin in the mountains. We look forward to more of these types of trips and sharing our love of the outdoors with this child.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We love our home and neighborhood! We live in a three-bedroom two-story house. Our house has an open floor plan, which is great for hanging out as a family or hosting friends. All the bedrooms are on the second floor while the kitchen, dining room and living room are on the main floor and open up to each other. One of our favorite rooms is our bonus room. It is empty right now, but we plan to convert it into a playroom in the future. Also, we love spending time outdoors so we enjoy having a patio and fenced in backyard. When the weather is nice, we are usually outside grilling dinner, playing fetch with Maddie or gardening.

We live in a suburb outside of a growing city in Tennessee. We think that we have the best of both worlds because we have access to urban life while enjoying the close community feel of a small suburb. We try to take advantage of the city by going to sports games, dining at new restaurants, checking out museums or going to one of the many local parks.

Our neighborhood is in a golf-course community with fun amenities – a playground, tennis courts and our favorite part – a swimming pool. We have a homeowners' association that hosts events throughout the year. We always look forward to the annual summer BBQ with local food trucks. Many of our neighbors have young children, which makes our neighborhood an ideal place to raise a family.

Our Extended Families

Christmas PJ's With Ryan's Family

We come from very close families! Ryan is originally from an Illinois suburb. His parents, sister and entire extended family (including his grandparents, Grandma Angie and Papa) still live in his hometown. Ryan's sister and brother-in-law have two sons and one daughter. Most of Ryan's cousins have young children too, which makes visits there a lot of fun!

With Emily's Family

Emily is originally from the East Coast and her parents and sisters are split between Virginia and Massachusetts. There are children on Emily's side as well -- her middle sister and brother-in-law have two daughters. Even though Emily's family lives in different parts of the country, they make it a priority to get together as a family a few times a year.

Both sides of the family are very excited about our adoption plan, especially our parents. Ryan's parents are already planning to increase their visits as they cannot wait to become grandparents again. Emily's mom is looking forward to retiring near us in a few years so that she can play an active role in this child's life.

Although our immediate family lives out of state, Emily's aunt, uncle and cousins live in the same town as us . We see them often for dinners, celebrations and family game night. They are so excited for us and they cannot wait to be a part of this child's life.

From Us to You

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. It means a lot!

We met a few years ago through Emily's uncle, who is also one of Ryan's coworkers. He thought that we would make a great match so he offered to connect us. However, at the time, Emily was living in Virginia and Ryan was living in Tennessee. Nonetheless, we agreed to an introduction. We started to get to know each other long distance and realized how much we had in common. By the time we met in person for the first time, we instantly connected and decided to start a long distance relationship. While dating long distance, we had a lot of memorable experiences such as touring the monuments in Washington, D.C.; running our first race together; spending a week in New England and celebrating the holidays with each other's families for the first time! After dating long distance for a year, Emily moved to Tennessee and Ryan proposed shortly afterward. Although long distance can be hard, we are grateful for it because it helped us develop strong communication skills and patience. We believe these are fundamental qualities for a successful marriage.

For us, adoption has always been "Plan A" for how we will become parents. Because of our strong initial connection, we started talking about the future early on and this included growing our family. Ryan knew that he had fertility issues and he was open with Emily that he is not able to have children biologically. We started discussing adoption and right away, we both agreed that it was the best choice for us. Because adoption is something that we have talked about for years, we could not be more excited to be at this part of our journey.

We are thrilled at the possibility of becoming parents for the first time! We are already looking forward to all the memorable experiences that we will have with this child - beach vacations, professional sports games, family camping trips, holidays and so much more! However, although we are excited for all the big moments of parenthood, we are also excited for the everyday moments too. We cannot wait to do all the "typical" mom/dad things like singing songs in the car on the way to school, making pancakes together on the weekends and reading books before bed.

For the past few years, we have immersed ourselves in adoption education. We know this is not an easy decision for you and we want you to know that you are already loved. We have learned a lot about the different levels of openness with adoption and we promise to send you updates throughout the years so you can see this child grow up too. Also, we are looking forward to a visit during the first five years. However, we know that the level of communication that all of us have with each other is your choice too. Whatever all of us decide together, we promise that we will talk openly and lovingly about adoption with this child. This child will always know his/her birth story and know about you.
