Our Cultural Heritage

Hammer Was So Excited to Show Katy & Her Parents Cartagena, Colombia!

We celebrate our cultural diversity and heritage within both our families. Hammer is Colombian and Chinese and Katy is Caucasian. We have had the honor of celebrating and educating each other and our families about our cultural backgrounds and traditions.

South Florida is extremely diverse which enables us to learn about various traditions and cultures. We also have family members who are African American and Filipino which has helped to enlightened us even further. In addition, Hammer's family is bilingual and we can't wait to bring up a child in a bilingual household. We also plan to take the child to Colombia to see where Hammer was raised and learn even more about the Colombian culture.

Not only do we love learning about traditions and cultures, but we also love trying cultural cuisines. We are excited to adopt a child and integrate all of our cultures into our lifestyle.

Our Leisure Time

We Enjoy Visiting Tourist Attractions in Our Own Backyard!

We love to explore our part of Florida during weekends and holidays. You can find us trying out new restaurants, walking around downtown, taking the new high speed train to Fort Lauderdale or Miami to explore science museums, or exploring local museums, zoos, etc. We also enjoy riding our bikes, walking nature trails, and snorkeling. During football season, we usually have friends and family over to watch college football and enjoy food, fun, and games. We love going to farmer's markets, festivals, and concerts. There is so much going on in South Florida that it allows for something new all the time!

Our faithful companion, Kendall, is often with us. Kendall is our 2-year-old Yorkie who is full of personality! We love taking her for walks around the neighborhood and she even goes for bike rides with us. She is a constant companion to dinners out, trips to our parents' houses, and everyday outings. She loves children and has a special relationship with our 4-year-old niece. They love running around, chasing each other, and our niece even makes special forts just for Kendall. The unconditional love we experience with Kendall is the love we hope to give and receive from a child.

Our Family Traditions

Christmas Eve

The clock strikes midnight, bells are jingling at the front door, the door starts to open, and what do you hear? "Merry Christmas!" Santa walks through the door with his sack of toys and the look on the children's faces is priceless.

But let's rewind ... this is just a small portion of the joys of Christmas Eve with Hammer's family. It starts with a delicious meal followed by games for the young and young at heart. We even have a piñata! Since he was a child, this is how Hammer has spent his Christmas Eve and we can't wait to share this incredibly special tradition with a child.

Our families love the holidays and we can't wait to start even more traditions. From celebrating New Year's Eve together and eating our 12 grapes symbolizing our 12 wishes for the year, eating our "good luck" black-eyed peas on New Year's Day, taking part in our town's St. Patrick's Day and Christmas parades, 4th of July activities, to even simpler traditions as in spending quality time together on Sundays, we can't wait to share these and make new memories with a child.

Our House and Neighborhood

We Live in a Safe, Friendly Community

We live in a great neighborhood in South Florida. We have a 2 bedroom townhouse which has 2 ½ bathrooms. We have a park and pool within walking distance. The elementary school which is right down the street is highly rated and is a school of the arts.

Our neighborhood has an annual Halloween decorating contest and we have won two years in a row! We take great pride in all of our holiday decorating!

Our city has fun festivals, parades, and farmers' markets throughout the year. We love lighting up our bikes and riding in the annual Christmas parade. Our town also has a Halloween parade where all of the local children show off their costumes and get candy from the local shop owners. We also enjoy the 4th of July fireworks and fun holiday activities that occur practically in our backyard!

We are very close to the downtown area which has a public library, delicious restaurants, and lots of shops. We enjoy walking the downtown area and eating ice cream. We also enjoy riding our bikes to the beach and exploring everything our town has to offer.

Our Extended Families

Katy's Family

We are lucky enough to live close to most of our extended families. Katy has one brother and Hammer has one sister. Our fathers are still working, Katy's father owns a family business, and Hammer's father is a handyman. Our mothers are retired and cannot wait to help with a child. This will be the first grandchild for Katy's parents and the third grandchild for Hammer's parents.

Hammer's Family

We are very close to our families and love to get together to watch football, enjoy dinners together, have family barbecues, etc. We love to play Rummikub, cards, board games, and corn hole. We sincerely enjoy each other's company!

Our families are extremely supportive of our adoption plan and have been there for us throughout the beginning part of this journey. They continue to pray for us and are a part of each step of the way.

From Us to You

"We will forever know there are no sufficient words, and there will never be anything we could give, that would be as meaningful as the life you created and chose to share with us."

We read this quote and it spoke to us about the difficult decision you are going through. We admire your strength and courage as you navigate the process of adoption. We will forever be grateful to you for the amazing gift you are bestowing upon us.

We are Hammer and Katy, a couple from South Florida. We have been together for 7 years and married for 3 years. We have known each other for a while as we grew up in the same area and have mutual friends. We have even endured a long distance relationship as Katy moved to Denver and then Tampa to pursue a master's degree in speech-language pathology shortly after we began dating.

Even before we were married, we discussed having children both biologically and through adoption. After being married for a year or so, we started trying to become pregnant. We became pregnant shortly after starting to try; however, we suffered a miscarriage. After obtaining clearance, we started trying to have a baby again. After trying for over a year and not becoming pregnant, we went through a series of tests and discovered we would not be able to have a biological child. During this time, we began praying, researching adoption, and decided to go back to church. During the first sermon, the pastor called the congregation to open their hearts to adoption. This is when we knew we were on the right track and that God would lead us to where we are today.

We both come from large extended families; most of which lives very close to us. Our families are extremely supportive of our adoption journey and cannot wait to be a part of a child's life. Family is our top priority and we will fully support a child by teaching the importance of education, religion, respect, kindness, and a strong work ethic.

We plan to share your child's adoption journey from the start. Adoption will never be a surprise. We plan on reading adoption books to a child and sharing the love you have for your child. You will always be spoken of in high regard and your child will always know who loved him or her first. We will be happy to share his or her growth and progress with you through pictures and letters.

Thank you for considering us as potential parents for your child. We pray for you and your difficult decision. You are incredibly courageous and are showing an enormous amount of generosity by sharing your child with another family.

We hope by learning about us it helps to make your decision a little easier knowing you will be sharing your child with a family who will do nothing but love and support him or her. We continue to pray for you during this time.

Sincerely,

Hammer & Katy
