Our Lifestyle

Rice Paddie Fishing in Hanoi, Vietnam

Our lifestyle is best described as adventurous while having a strong base. We enjoy exploring new places, trying new things, and meeting new people both near and far. While we enjoy distant exploration we also dedicate time to our friends, family, and community connections where we live. We like to explore locally to discover and connect with the local culture--going to the local farmers market, finding and trying a family-owned restaurant, canoeing the local river, or participating in a Veteran's Day parade, apple picking, or wandering through a corn maze. We enjoy being a tourist in our own city. We also enjoy exploring further from home...different cultures, different countries, and learning about them through their history and their people. We live in Germany and over the past several months have enjoyed getting to know the Germans by visiting historic villages and participating in traditions like Octoberfest and Christmas Markets. We've also been fortunate to visit other countries in Central America, Europe and Asia: we visited a wine-producing region in France and learned about their connection to the land; in Poland we learned about their food origins; in Vietnam we visited a village, fished, and a family taught us how to prepare local meals; in Cambodia we volunteered at a school and made and served lunch to the children; and in Mexico we visited the Mayan pyramids and snorkeled. We love to travel and look forward to sharing our sense of wonder, excitement and adventure with this child!

Our Leisure Time

Volksmarch With Friends

We love the "Great Outdoors," visiting new places, going to sporting events, meeting new people, and having our families and friends right there next to us. Having a great cup of coffee together kicks off most of our weekends. One of our favorite weekend activities is hiking. We've hiked parts of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania and North Carolina and hiked in the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. In Germany most of our hikes or "volksmarches" are with the German American Wandering Club. Our friends, their children, and their dog "Flapjack" joined us on a recent hike through local forests, orchards, and fields. Another favorite weekend activity is going to sporting events especially watching the St. Louis Cardinals, the Nashville Sounds, the Army football team, and the Tennessee Titans. We also enjoy exploring--going on day trips to nearby villages, touring castles, palaces, and enjoying local treats (there are a lot in Germany!). We also enjoy exercising, gardening, and grilling out. Joe enjoys running and playing sports, planting pepper plants and grilling most anything. Sarah enjoys walking, grooming her flowers, and helping her cacti grow. On Sundays we go to church and afterwards, Joe cooks his favorite breakfast...bacon and eggs (made to order). On week-day nights we enjoy dinner together, talking about our day, watching a favorite TV show or movie, playing a board game...and just being together. We cannot wait to share our lives with this child, exploring all of life's wonders and discovering what excites them.

What Makes Us Unique

We both like to be part of something larger than ourselves, we take pride in service, and we look for ways to give back.

Sarah worked for many years as a psychologist working with babies and families to make sure that both the children and families received the care that they needed. She found this work extremely satisfying and important because what she did directly helped people get the care and resources they required and helped them answer their many questions. The enjoyment and satisfaction she got from this later inspired Sarah to join multiple non-profit military spouses' clubs that similarly helped people through scholarships and grants. Sarah likes seeing the fruit of her work through other peoples' successes.

In a similar way Joe has been serving in the U.S. Army and serving the country his entire adult life. He also enjoys contributing to something that is larger than himself--in this case defending and serving the Nation. He loves what the Army stands for and its values: leadership, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, courage. He takes great pride in developing and teaching Soldiers and in his profession as an Army officer. We both find great satisfaction and importance in contributing to efforts and ideas larger than ourselves and get great joy from others' successes.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our German Neighborhood

We are fortunate to be a part of two communities. Our U.S. military community is located a short drive from our lovely flat in a city in southern Germany. Our neighborhood is active, full of energy, life and families with little ones. It's a great place to raise a family. It is a safe neighborhood with sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks throughout. Our neighborhood has a kindergarten, elementary and Montessori school all within a block or two from our flat. There is a playground across the street from us where children and their parents play daily. Saturdays are a special day in our neighborhood when families gather to enjoy the local street market. The street market is full of children laughing and playing games as families socialize and enjoy the local foods and crafts.

The heart of our city is a leisurely walk away. Located in the center is Schlossplatz, the largest square in the city, where families gather to relax and festivals are held. One of our favorite festivals is the Christmas Market where the square turns into a magical wonderland where sights, sounds, and smells of the holiday season fill the air. Merchants' booths are elaborately decorated with reindeer, nutcrackers, and Santas of all sizes. Children eagerly wait in lines to sample chocolate treats and ride Santa's train. The Christmas Market is a joyous place where everyone can be a kid.

We love our communities and look forward to experiencing all they have to offer with a child!

Our Extended Families

Boating With Joe's Family

We both come from very close and supportive families who truly love just hanging out with one another. We come together often, on holidays, birthdays, other special occasions and other times just because we enjoy being together.

At the Beach With Sarah's Family

We usually gather at our parents' homes, regardless of the occasion. Both families also try to spend a week together over the summer--Sarah's family at the beach in North Carolina and Joe's family usually in Saint Louis. No matter where we gather, we usually hang, catch up with what everybody's been doing, play ball, Scrabble, or Family Feud, and eat! Both our families enjoy cooking and when we're all together we rotate the cooking duties between families to give our parents a break. One of our favorite meals to cook is "bait-in-the-bucket" (what Sarah's family calls it) or low-country boil (what Joe's family calls it). Two names for the same meal...whatever the name, it's shrimp, polish sausage, new potatoes, and corn on the cob boiled together in a huge pot with onions and a lot of Old Bay Seasoning. Sarah's family also adds crab legs! Once done, we dump the ingredients onto a newspaper-covered table for all to eat family style (forks optional!). The kitchen is always a busy place filled with life and lots of conversation.

Our families are very excited to welcome this child amongst us, to wrap this child in love, and to raise this child among loving, fun, joyful, and caring cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

From Us to You

We are truly honored and thankful that you have taken the time to consider us. We cannot even begin to imagine how difficult this decision is for you but what we know is that you are a courageous, selfless person who loves their child so much that you are willing to do what you feel is best for your child. We would like for you to know that you are not alone and, although we have not met, we think about you and your baby each day. We hope we get to meet you and your child one day and that we continue to walk side by side, together as a family.

This past November we celebrated our four-year anniversary. We have a lot to be thankful for and we are both blessed to have very loving and supportive families and friends. Our hearts are bursting with love as we anxiously wait to share our love with a child. Over the past few years we tried to have children--at first naturally and then through IVF but were told our chances of conceiving were unlikely. We were initially heartbroken but then gradually turned our focus to something we always talked about--adoption. We are now fully committed to adopting and raising children in a very loving home.

We have an unwavering and deep love for one another. Our marriage is based on love, honesty, and trust and we look forward to welcoming your child into that environment as well as into a loving and supportive extended family. We plan to raise this child much as we were raised, in a loving, supportive, and joy-filled atmosphere. We want to help this child experience the same great childhood that we had as children. We want to teach your child independence and character, love, and caring. We want to provide them opportunities to find and pursue their passions all while knowing that they are loved, cared for and safe. We look forward to teaching your child about honesty, respect, and doing their best. Overall, we look forward to guiding them and watching them develop into their own person.

We will always be open and honest with your child about how our family came to be. We will make sure your child knows that you love them completely, that you always will, and that your brave decision was based on love. As time passes, we are happy to share letters and pictures of your child's growth and joy with you.

We are committed to loving, raising and protecting this child. We love to travel, explore, and experience the world--your child will share those opportunities. We've recently had a wonderful opportunity to travel and explore since we have been stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army...but we are also looking forward to returning to the U.S. soon and being closer to friends and family. Your child will be part of a loving and supportive, big, extended family. We can't wait! We, along with our families and friends, are waiting with open arms to welcome you and your child into our family. We know that you face a very difficult and trying decision...our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We look forward to meeting you and know that you will always be a part of our family.
