Merle & Katie
We're glad you have taken the time to review our profile. We are excited to expand our family and continue to help the world become better one child at a time. Your/our child will experience lots of laughter, support for their personality, and fun family memories. We have lead a life of service and assistance to others and we hope we can be that to you.
Our Leisure Time
Merle is known to be the human encyclopedia of movie and TV show trivia. He is often found playing video games online and recording movie podcasts with his brother. His sister visits often and they recently created a short film.
Merle works for a university teaching English composition and literature, is also a writing tutor and instructs at-risk youths in a math and science summer program. He goes above and beyond for each student. He has a passion for writing and his dream job would be a full-time writer.
Katie also enjoys watching movies. One of her favorites is The Hunger Games—she even dressed up as Katniss Everdeen for Halloween! Katie also loves to watch sports, especially college softball.
Another hobby of Katie's is DIY projects—she is often found working on something new for our home!
Katie has worked as a surgical technologist for 11 years at a local hospital. As a child she became interested in medicine, which led her toward a career in healthcare. Her mom loves to tell the story of how, when Katie was a child, she would be eating mac-n-cheese while watching a show on surgery!
Fun Facts About Us
We understand the importance of exposing our child to not only their own cultural background, but to a wide variety of cultural activities, as well.
We will use our love of movies and literature to introduce our children to media that represents diverse cultural characters— For example, playing Disney films that show characters from non-Caucasian backgrounds like Moana, Mulan, etc.
We live outside of a major metropolitan city that offers street festivals, music festivals and other events that are multicultural. We intend to immerse our child early in play groups and library reading groups that are offered in our city and nearby communities. There are events for adoptive families in our area that will enrich our child's life by allowing them to meet and share friendships with other adopted children.
Our House and Neighborhood
We own a condo in a wonderful, family friendly city of around 36,000 people.
Our quiet community is a great place to raise a family. We are within walking distance to the city's largest park, where in the summer there are numerous activities to do, including a beach, swimming pond, splash pad, hiking trails, tennis, baseball, soccer, summer plays and live music.
The park also holds many festivals, include the Fiesta Latina, Germanfest and and Regnerfest (a family festival with a 5K Dirty Mud Run). In winter the park turns into a Christmas wonderland and the park lights up with thousands of Christmas lights—they even have a Disney themed night!
There are a number or state parks just 20 minutes outside of town. If we feel like heading in to the city, downtown Milwaukee is less than an hour away.
Our Extended Families
Merle is very close to his family, especially his brother and sister. Merle's sister lives in Iowa with her fiancé and visits often. Merle's brother lives in Maryland and although he lives on the East coast, they play video games together almost every weekend. Merle's grandparents and other extended family are about an hour from our home.
Merle's parents live in Kansas City. We visit them at least twice a year and together we enjoy shopping, four-wheeling, boating, going to the movies, playing board games and exploring new areas of Kansas City, including BBQ!
Katie's family lives in Wisconsin and are 2.5 hours away from our home. Her parents live in her hometown and she has 4 younger siblings. We visit her siblings multiple times a year and enjoy hunting and fishing together. We also spend each Christmas with them, where we exchange gifts then head outside to play football in the snow.
Katie's dad and stepmom are very involved in local musicals. Most recently they were in a production of Mama Mia! Katie's mom visits us a few times a year, where we enjoy visiting the city-wide rummage sales, outlet mall shopping and adventuring to try new restaurants and activities in Milwaukee.
From Us to You
Families define themselves in different ways, they don't need to be genetic and may be blended by race. Adoption is a blending of two families: birth and adoptive families. It's a lifetime bond and appreciation of emotions. We chose adoption to help us build our family and we'd like to tell you a little bit more about us.
We met while working at the same grocery store when we were in our late teens. Merle kept talking to a coworker of ours who introduced us because Merle was shy. While working a similar shift a couple of our coworkers told us it was our turn to bring in shopping carts. We couldn't stop talking outside and Katie asked him out on a date later that day. We watched the movie Dodge Ball and talked at Taco Bell until 1 a.m.
We married at 21 and talked about how our family would be created. We wanted 3 children and foster care, adoption and having biological children were options we discussed. We decided to wait until we were done with college and a few years into our careers before trying to start a family. We tried for 5 years to conceive and it led to Katie having surgery for endometriosis. Four months later we were pregnant, only to lose the pregnancy 6 weeks in. After we both grieved, the idea of adoption resurfaced. Since we never defined family as being genetic, adoption was the perfect fit for us. Additionally, our family and friends have supported us through 13 years of marriage and are excited for us to adopt. We've dealt with many obstacles but remain resilient.
We enjoy traveling, though Merle loves road trips and Katie would rather fly. We've been to Europe twice, Bahamas for our honeymoon, Nashville, and Kansas City for a couple of road trips. We plan to continue to travel and include our children in our adventures such as road trips, vacations to Europe, visit theme parks like Six Flags and water parks. We played sports growing up and will encourage our children to play. We enjoy cooking meals at home, trying new recipes but we do enjoy having our restaurant date nights, especially BBQ!
Our hopes and dreams for your/our child is to be happy, have lots of laughter, support from family, creating new memories, and be kind to others. We want the word adoption to be part of normal conversation and not brought up later in childhood. We'll talk to the child about their adoption starting when they are an infant. As the child grows and matures we'll explain what adoption is, about their birth parents and how we chose them in ways they can understand.
We intend to send you letters and photos twice a year, create a private Facebook page and meet in person at least once before the child turns 5. When the child is older, we would like to ask them if they want more contact with you, if it's in their best interest and you are open to it.
