Kyle & Dawn
We cannot wait to expand our family through this journey of adoption. We understand this isn't always an easy decision so we thank you for considering us as you start down this path. Loving a child and raising them to be a well rounded adult will be the greatest privilege of our lives.
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Travel and vacation are something that is very important to us. We have always seen taking time away from our busy lives and hectic schedule to slow down and enjoy each other and all the great things there are out there to see. Dawn has a goal of visiting all 50 states and Kyle has jumped on that adventure with her. We don't have a specific place we always go for vacation due to there being so many great places out there to be seen. Some of our favorite vacation spots we have visited are Ireland, Vermont and Charleston, South Carolina.
We went to Ireland last year for a week and it was incredible. Dawn's family is from there and we were able to go to the small town she was from and see where her families land used to be and the church her family was baptized in. On our way there we enjoyed all the nature and green spaces and even got to go to the top of a church and play the church bells in a small town in southern Ireland. Last year we also went to Vermont for a week with Dawns family to a Lake house to kayak, hike and unwind. Kyle loves to learn the history of places and when we were in South Carolina we went on a walking Civil War tour and also a ghost tour after dark to learn about the culture of the city and how it came to be.
How We Met
We met at a Royals baseball game tailgate that was hosted by our friend's work. One of Kyle's and one of Dawn's friends both worked for the same company and brought them along. We met before the game and talked more after the game. During their first date Kyle made all the wrong choices by taking a picky eater to an adventurous restaurant and then trying to make up for that by going to get pie which is Dawn's least favorite dessert.
Within 2 weeks of their relationship Dawn also took Kyle, who is afraid of heights, skydiving for the first time. He went through with it but will likely never do anything like that again.
The final hurdle to the beginnings of our relationship was that Dawn had one of her clinical rotations for her last year of PT school after we had only been seeing each other about a month. This rotation was all the way across the state, about 4 hours away, and lasted over 2 months. Something must have gone right though because we have been mostly inseparable for the next 8 years after that.
We have always had dogs in our lives growing up. Dawn's first dog Coal has a very special place in her heart due to the fact it was her childhood dog she and her sister begged for as children. Kyle also had a childhood dog Jack who he also has fond memories of. We always knew we would get a dog as a couple and as soon as we bought a house with a yard. Once that was accomplished a dog was the top priority. We went to the local shelter a couple months later and found Chevy! As always, Kyle wanted to get him right away and Dawn wanted time to think about it but we left with Chevy and it has been one of the best decisions we have made.
He is very lovable and energetic and an integral part of our family. He is always up for playing ball or going on a run but also just laying around cuddling on the couch watching a movie. As long as he is with us he is happy! He loves playing with kids especially since they love throwing the ball for him.
Our Extended Families
We are closest to Dawn's sister and her husband both in our relationship and in distance as they live only 25 minutes away. They have just had their first child so there will be very close cousins in the picture. The rest of our immediate families are in different cities but are a drive-able distance so trips to see grandparents and Kyle's brother and sister will be frequent. There are also already 2 more future cousins to visit their alongside this child's aunts and uncles. We like to see family as much as possible and have some fun traditions we can't wait to share. Some of the most fun include: the yearly family reunion to see all Dawn's mom's side of the family over Memorial Day weekend where we all bet on who will win the Indy 500 or the Haworth Olympics during Christmas with Kyle's family.
We also like to take family vacations to explore nature and get outdoors like going to a lake house in Vermont last year with Dawn's family.
We also have a very tight knit group of friends around us for many years now that are also considered family bringing even more friendships, play-dates, and support to the life of this child.
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a suburb of a large mid-western city with a lot going on so we don't always have to drive into the city for activities. The downtown area has a weekly farmers market and a number of small shops and restaurants. This area also has a number of events throughout the year like Oktoberfest and Downtown Days. During Downtown Days they shut down the street and have games, food, and rides. Nearby we have a large lake and a nature reserve for activities such as kayaking, fishing, and hiking.
There is also a nice park with a playground and bike trail only a 5 minute walk from our front door. This area is also known for its high quality public school system. Our house at the end of a street that is quiet when the neighborhood kids aren't out playing games. We live in a multi-story house with 4 bedrooms a large living area and a finished basement. There is also a deck in the backyard overlooking our large fenced backyard. The basement is perfect for cuddling up to watch a movie with our dog, Chevy.
From Us to You
To be blunt we think you should pick us. We know now from this experience that words seem to fail when it comes to events of this magnitude. It is hard for us to convey in this letter all the complex emotions and important details we want you to know while making this decision. We are of course excited and ready for this journey but also understand the challenges along the way for all involved. Our intention is to do whatever we can to have the best outcome possible focusing on the child but not neglecting you in the process.
We met after a major league baseball game and started dating soon after. Kyle was already working in IT and Dawn was finishing up Physical Therapy school when started dating. We have now been together for over 7 years now and have been married for over 4. Really we have acted married for more than the 4 though. Kyle always jokes that he knew we would be married in the first couple of months of the relationship. We have a true partnership without the defined marriage roles of previous generations. This partnership is not just about roles around the house but we also have that person there to dive into new adventures with and provide support through difficult challenges. Our favorite things to do are travel, go to new restaurants in town and go to concerts. One of the many things that we like to do that meshes our interests is going to the symphony (which Kyle loves) but we go to the showing of Harry Potter (which Dawn loves) while the symphony replaces the sound track. Kyle also loves to cook while Dawn loves to bake so we can make a delicious meal.
We know that after reviewing this content it can seem that we are just another boring suburban white mid-western couple... and you are not wrong. But in all seriousness we make it a point to get out of our bubble as much as possible to expose ourselves to other people, opinions, and cultures. We take a purposeful approach to life knowing you have to get out there to truly get the most out of it. This happens in grand gestures via travel but also in everyday things like cooking and other activities.
We will attempt to take this approach with the child as well. It is important to us to educate the child in many ways outside of just formal schooling. We will teach an understanding of how to be a good person and to pass along our independent spirit to the child. This will not just apply to necessary tasks to be an independent person but also our passions and hobbies.
We are planning on being as open as possible about the adoption with the child as it is age appropriate. Along the way we will share information and pictures working toward whatever relationship makes sense for us, you, and the child. This could include physical visits, photos, emails and phone calls as appropriate and in the best interest of all parties involved. You will always be a part of their life and we are willing to make that work for the best interest of the child.
We look forward to starting this adventure of parenthood with you.
