Kris & Michelle
Thank you so much for taking the time to view our profile. We've been looking forward to expanding our family for many years and cannot wait to bring a child into our home. We'll do everything possible to bring as much joy, laughter, and love into this child's life. Please know that you are in our thoughts and we fully support whatever decision you make.
Addressing Cultural Diversity
We believe that the more you learn about different cultures and beliefs, the more understanding, accepting and welcoming you will be towards everyone. We want to instill the importance of embracing diversity and inclusion to help a child become a more compassionate and well-rounded person.
We plan to introduce a child to people from various backgrounds so they can learn from their stories and experiences. We'll utilize music, art, food, and history to help inform a child about their own culture as well as many others. We live close to New York City and will spend time traversing various neighborhoods in order to experience the rich diversity of cultures that exists nearby. We recognize that we cannot be all things to a child and they will need role models that have a similar cultural background as them. We have close relationships with family and friends from a wide variety of cultures, ethnicities, races, and religions. Ultimately, it is most important to us that a child learn not to judge people based on differences and that they develop the compassion and conviction to stand up for others when they witness injustices. We want to raise a child who is loving, thoughtful, and kind; who understands there is value in all perspectives and that there is goodness in people from all backgrounds.
Our Leisure Time
Much of our free time is spent at the local park or in our backyard with family and friends. Individually, we have various hobbies that we enjoy and are excited to share with a child.
Kris plays about a dozen different musical instruments including guitar, banjo, bass, saxophone, clarinet, flute, and piano. The house is filled with music! He runs over six miles a day and makes fresh bread and pizza every week. Though we often cook together, Kris usually leads culinary projects like making pasta from scratch, preparing meals from various cultures, and canning foods.
Michelle enjoys growing food from seed to harvest and gives fresh produce to family, friends, and neighbors. She also donates some of the vegetables to the local food bank. She takes great pride in preparing meals that come straight from the garden. She picks and dries herbs to use throughout the year and makes yogurt every week. Michelle loves arts and crafts including beading, making soaps, pottery, photography, doing projects that repurpose recycled materials, and knitting hats for charity.
What it Means to be Parents
Love and laughter permeate our lives and we can't wait to share those with a child. We're looking forward to the big life milestones like first steps and graduations, but are even more excited for the little everyday moments like having dinner together & reading before bedtime. We're looking forward to making a child feel better after they scrape their knee, answering big life questions at 4:00am, and helping them navigate the complexities of the world. We dream about the silly times like dancing around the house, singing, and building forts. And we can't wait to play at the beach, run our first 5k as a family, encourage their imagination to soar, and watch their expression the first time they see the ocean.
We look forward to the process of watching a child grow and develop as a person; hearing the amazingly hilarious and insightful things kids say, and guiding them through moments that help them take perspective, understand, and appreciate the world. We are excited for the ups and downs, the big and small, and the serious and silly moments of being parents!
Our Extended Families
Michelle's parents live close by and often meet us at a local beach to walk. They also come to our house every week to play board games and eat homemade pizza. She has a large extended family, most of whom live close by. We get together with aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout the year. Every summer one of Michelle’s uncles has a party at his house on a lake where we swim, kayak, and eat a big meal. During the holidays, Michelle's stepfather loves dressing up as Santa and even grew a bushy white beard one year to make the experience more authentic. The whole family sings Christmas carols together led by Kris on the guitar.
Kris' family lives a few hours away, but we get together throughout the year and have a weekly Zoom date. They are incredible cooks and have many traditions involving food. The Italian side of his family gathers in late summer to process dozens of bushels of tomatoes in order to jar sauce for the rest of the year. They also get together to make "Christmas Peppers" which are stuffed hot peppers in a vinegary brine. Our nephews love trying to find the hottest pepper to eat!
Everyone is so excited to welcome a child into the family!
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a three-bedroom, three-bathroom house on a cul-de-sac in an extremely kid-friendly neighborhood. Our favorite part of the house is our half-acre backyard which has three large garden boxes and a greenhouse that we built ourselves. We grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and love preparing and eating meals that came directly from our yard!
Our neighborhood has families with children of all ages who ride bikes, go fishing, play basketball, and hang out together. Our neighbors can't wait to have another child on the block! Each year we all gather for a neighborhood party to kick off the summer. Halloween is a particularly wonderful spectacle with the streets literally filled with trick-or-treaters and a constant flow of kids ringing our bell.
Almost every day throughout the spring, summer, and fall we visit a local beach/park where we run, kayak, swim, walk, and relax with family and friends. The beach is open year-round and is great for young children. There are rarely waves, the beach is gently sloped, and the water is shallow; perfect for little legs to splash around! We're so excited to visit all the beaches, parks, and playgrounds within walking distance from our home with a child!
From Us to You
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. We can't begin to imagine how difficult this time is for you and want you to know that we support whatever decisions you make throughout this process. Our hearts are with you every step of the way.
We met over 16 years ago while working at a guitar store/music school. Kris taught music lessons and Michelle scheduled them. We started out as friends and eventually the relationship grew into more. We've been together for about 15 years and married for over eight years. We can both honestly say that we like each other more and more as the years pass. Clear, honest communication, and having a sense of humor about ourselves has been the recipe for keeping our lives relatively simple and filled with joy. We cannot wait to share all our joy and love with a child!
For about seven years we tried to have a biological child. We had always talked about having two children, one biological and one adopted. After ending fertility treatments and taking the time to process the fact that we were not going to have a biological child, we dove into the world of adoption. We've spent a good deal of time researching the best way for us to grow our family and methods to support a child throughout their life. We believe adoption is a lifelong process and we're committed to educating ourselves, our extended families, and friends so we can build a solid and supportive community for a child. Our families, friends, and neighbors are beyond excited to welcome a baby into the family and have been dreaming about the things we'll all do together like going to the beach, playing music, and getting messy with arts and crafts and in the garden!
We are both teachers who value education, but recognize that a traditional path to learning is not necessarily right for everyone. Kris is a middle and high school math teacher at a special education school. He absolutely adores his students! Kris is also an extremely talented musician. He plays in a variety of bands that are all different genres. Michelle is a part-time outreach educator for an environmental non-profit and she has an extremely flexible schedule. She creates nature-based programs and works with children and adults of all ages and abilities.
We're committed to helping a child develop a strong value system. We'll encourage them to be kind, compassionate, thoughtful, and understand the benefits of hard work. We'll help them put themselves in other people's shoes so they understand different perspectives. We want to show a child a broad range of cultures so they internalize the value of diversity and learn to celebrate their own culture. Most of all, we'll encourage them to be true to themselves.
We look forward to sharing letters and pictures with you on a regular basis. We're also happy to mail little mementos each year through American Adoptions if you like. Your child will know who you are and that the decision you made for them was based on love. We will always regard you with respect and speak positively about you. We are open to meeting and will always consider you part of our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you make your way through this incredibly difficult journey.
