How Adoption has Affected Us

Our Family

Our daughter, Aurora, joined our family through adoption. She has been an enormous blessing to our entire family and enjoys being doted on my her aunts and grandparents. We have great relationships with both of her birth parents. We are thrilled to be able to maintain these relationships with people that love our child.

About to Go Exploring

While we had always been interested in adoption as a beautiful way to create a family, we didn't really know much about specifics until we experienced infertility and recurrent miscarriages in the first years of our marriage. In some ways adoption is such an unknown for all parties involved, but one thing that we know is that adoption is created by love on all sides.

It has been amazing to discover others in our social circle whose lives have been touched by adoption. We have friends who have adopted, who are adopting, who were adopted, and who are birth mothers. As these people share their experiences and we share ours, we have gathered a community of people who "get" it and who provide mutual support and respect.

Our Adventures

Fun at the Boston Tea Party Museum

We love adventures! We are a super active family who love to explore and learn about new places, people, and things. Traveling is a huge part of our lifestyle. Whether that was our daughter traveling to 13 states by 13 weeks, Mallori studying abroad twice, visiting Trevor’s parents in Hawaii, meeting up in Munich and Vienna and Spain while we were engaged, or living in new states due to being a military family we live for adventure.

We are excited to take this child to visit Mallori’s best friend who lives in Orlando near Disney World, to ride horseback in Hawaii, to the beach at Hilton Head near our home. We are looking forward to introducing them to different cultures, food, and languages abroad.

We also find adventure in the every day. Whatever that’s exploring the creek behind our house, local hiking, or trying to locate every playground in the community.

Addressing Cultural Diversity

About to Start Cooking for Lunar New Year Celebrations

We are lucky to live and work in a diverse community rich with new experiences and interesting people. Being a military family means that our friends, neighbors, and coworkers come from all over the country and all over the world in pursuit of a shared goal. In our time in the military, we have experienced a military family that comes from many ethnicities, religions, and walks of life.

Diversity has been even more important to us on a personal level since adopting our daughter Aurora. Aurora’s birthmom is Vietnamese-American and her birthdad is Chinese-American. Her birth parents have been kind enough to share some family and cultural traditions with us that we have added to our family traditions. We celebrate Lunar New Year and go to a church with a large Vietnamese-American population. We also make a point to make sure that our daughter and we have friends and role models from all walks of life. We feel like our community has really stepped up to make sure that she has amazing and diverse role models of successful people. As we prepare to adopt again, we are committed to learning the cultural heritage of this new family member and embracing it.

Our Extended Families

Christmas in Hawaii

Our families are extremely excited for us to adopt again and we are excited to welcome this child to the family. Our daughter, Aurora, is also excited to be a big sister.

We enjoy spending lots of time with our families. Mallori's parents and sister often come with us to the neighborhood park to play on the swings and teeter-totter, or join us for a barbecue. Mallori has a large extended family who enjoy getting together on holidays and special occasions throughout the year. At Thanksgiving or Christmas, the kitchen comes alive with smells like roast beef, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. The living room fills with stories and laughter.

Hanging with Grandma

Trevor's extended family is smaller but tight-knit. Trevor's parents retired to Hawaii. Visits there involve lots of sun and sand on the beach and splashes in their pool. We often meet Trevor's parents or sister Kelsey at fun vacation spots, exploring new aquariums, lakes, or hiking trails. We really enjoy traveling and being outside with our families. Our families have many traditions. Mallori's mom is of Italian heritage so most of our family events center around home-cooked food, often with meats from the local butcher shop and veggies from a farmer's market. Trevor's family shares his love of games, with cards or game pieces moving around the table along with puns and memories.

We look forward to sharing our family fun with this child.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in a spacious, three bedroom home in a suburb of a mid-size city. We love playing with friends in our fenced in backyard and listening to the small creek just beyond. We live in a family friendly and diverse neighborhood. Most of our neighbors have children as well. We have an open floorplan downstairs that is great for entertaining and upstairs we have a cozy family room. There is a neighborhood park a block away and a splash pad, swimming pool, and large community space two miles away.

Our favorite room is undoubtedly the kitchen. Nourishing and tasty food is a big part of our life. We enjoy cooking lots of healthy foods, especially those that celebrate different aspects our our heritages. Some of our favorite things to cook are ribs with lavender from our garden, pho, and herbed salmon. We enjoy sitting on our back patio and sharing meals. We have very diverse tastes and enjoy trying new restaurants and cooking new things. This has been very important to our family to embrace the cultural heritages of all our family whether that is Mallori's Scottish, German, and Italian heritage, Trevor's Polish and Irish heritage or Rori's Vietnamese and Chinese heritage. As this child joins our family, we will also embrace their heritage(s).

From Us to You

We are so thankful that you even took the time to read and consider our profile. We are so excited to add another child to our family. To complete our family. We consider being parents to be an amazing responsibility where every age and every stage is better than the last.

We met in law school in 2013 and began dating in 2014. We got married in 2016. Mallori had known since high-school that she might have difficulty getting pregnant and it was something that we had talked about a bit early in our dating relationship. One thing that drew was together was the we both wanted to be parents and that we didn't care whether that was through biology. After multiple miscarriages, we knew that adoption was how we were going to build our family. Adopting our daughter in 2019 only reinforced how much we love raising our child and how little biology matters to us. It was truly instant love.

Our family is amazing, but we do not feel that it is complete. We are so excited to be parents for the second time and to see Aurora become a big sister. We are particularly excited that Aurora will share this adoption bond with her new baby sibling and to see the bonds that they forge as siblings. It's been a long, stressful process to complete our family. We want to see the littlest child's first bath, their first steps, their first time on an airplane.

We were active single people, we were an active couple, and we are active parents. We include our daughter on hikes and take her to beaches (usually dog friendly ones so our pup, Bella, can join). At a very young age, Aurora joined us in chasing waterfalls and seeing the world. We enjoy eating unique foods (one of our favorite memories is going to a fancy restaurant with Aurora's birth parents and trying raw oysters). We travel a lot.

On the other hand, we really enjoy cozy game nights, reading with a cup of tea, and evenings spent with friends chatting in our kitchen until midnight.

Though we both enjoy and work hard at our careers, we see them as a means to an end: to give our children the life they deserve plus some of the extras like travel, private lessons, pets, and a college fund. We prioritize living near work and keeping regular hours as a way to make sure that we get lots of quality family time and make memories.

We value creating memories and, if you're willing, we want to share those memories with you as the years go by. We will send pictures and letters of this child. We are also open to potentially having more contact such as texts, emails, video chat, and/or visits as this child grows. We have a very open adoption with Aurora's birth parents where we text photos of our day to day activities a couple times a week and occasionally video chat and meet for dinner. We also understand if you prefer less or no contact.

As we wrap this up, we want to thank you for taking the time to read our profile and for considering us as a home for this child.
