April & Andrea

Thank you for looking through our profile and getting to know our family. To us, family and parenthood are the greatest blessings we have in life. We have all the love and support a parent could wish for her child, and we cannot wait to see our family grow through adoption. We know the difficult decision that lies ahead of you, and we want to thank you for your consideration of our family.

Adoption in Our Lives

At a Friend's Wedding

Andrea's connection to adoption is very personal because she herself was adopted at birth. Her birth mother decided to place her for adoption because she felt that her life circumstances wouldn't allow for her to raise Andrea the way she'd like to. Andrea grew up with parents who honored the decision her birth mother made. They told the story about the day they picked Andrea up from the hospital and the conversations they had with Andrea's birth mother. Because of this, Andrea's birth mother is one of her heroes.

April, too, has a personal connection to adoption. She spent many months working in Guatemalan orphanages caring for children. This experience was one of many that led her to seek adoption rather than having biological children. Together, we feel we are called to grow our family through adoption, and we are so excited to share our experiences with our child.

Our Leisure Time

Visiting Beautiful Switzerland

We LOVE to travel, both within and outside of our country. Some of our favorite trips have been traveling to Italy for our wedding, Switzerland for our honeymoon, and a yearly trip to beautiful East Tennessee to cheer on Tennessee Vols! Andrea's family has a house in the mountains that we love to visit and spend time boating on a nearby lake. We hope to continue these trips to show our child everything our beautiful country and world have to offer. Our free time at home is mostly spent enjoying the breathtaking beaches of Hawaii, as well as going on hikes, playing tennis, and walking our two dogs. We also both love to listen to and play music. We have a growing vinyl collection that we love to strum along to. We also love to host friends and family for cookouts and game nights. We have an incredible group of friends that we consider to be extended family, so we spend a great deal of time with them as well. They have children of their own who we know look forward to having another child around to play with. April is a big reader, so her individual free time might be spent doing that, taking photographs around the island, or volunteering with a local outreach program. Meanwhile, you can likely find Andrea in the water! She loves to snorkel, surf, or just swim through the waves. We are so excited to welcome a child into this fun-filled life!

Addressing Cultural Diversity

We agree on the importance of avoiding a "colorblind" mentality where we tell our child the color of his or her skin doesn't matter. We believe it does matter, and it should be honored. It will always be a priority to us that our child feels a sense of belonging both in our home, and also in our neighborhoods, schools, and activities. We live in a diverse community, where children from many different racial and ethnic backgrounds play together outside every evening. We have close friends and family that represent different backgrounds and family structures. If we have a child of a different race, we are prepared to represent his or her birth culture on the walls of our home, in the reading and play materials provided to our child, in our daily life and conversations, and most importantly in our community and daily life. The world can be a cruel place, and regardless of a child's race, conversations need to be had surrounding the realities that lie behind us and still ahead of us. Racism and discrimination are everywhere, and we will discuss that with our child in a variety of ways as he or she grows up. We think that is the all-important first step in assisting a child with living in this society. Beyond that, we plan to always be a safe haven for conversation, questioning, and warmth.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We recently purchased a house in a suburb of Hawaii's capital, Honolulu. We can easily drive into the city for trips to the zoo, aquarium, amazing restaurants, local treats, and museums.

Neighborhood Pool

Our beautiful, new home has four bedrooms, a loft, and a large, open living space for family time. Our neighborhood is diverse, which is always a priority for us when choosing where to live. There are parks, playgrounds, a pool, and a mountain view outside of our home, and we live near many other young families and good schools. Children are out playing, riding bikes, or walking their dogs all the time! There are amazing beaches just five minutes away from our home, so we are looking forward to sandy days there with our family and returning home for backyard barbecues and games with friends and family.

This town and this island offer a one of a kind place to live and to grow up—where the weather is perfect year round, there is never a lack of new activities and adventures, and the aloha spirit welcomes everyone in with open arms.

Our Extended Families

Scooter Ride With Our Parents

We both come from close, supportive families. Both of our parents are excitedly awaiting the arrival of future grandchildren. They are eager to care for and spoil the child as only grandparents can! Most of our extended family is a flight away now, but they are retired and visit often to have quality time and make new memories together. Holidays, vacations, and special traditions are our favorite way to spend time together. April's mom is the master of Christmas JOY—she loves to include children in decorating, baking cookies, and making hot cocoa to drink in front of the fireplace. In addition to our parents, we have siblings and cousins who are excited to play a role in the child's life! They have their own children with whom the child can play at the next themed family reunion where we all dress up, play games, and eat food together. Music is also a big part of our family gatherings—many of us sing or play instruments, and we ALL love to dance! In our family, a child will have a lifetime of opportunities to be surrounded by love and support, as well as endless fun and laughter!

From Us to You

Thank you for taking the time to consider us as adoptive parents to your child. From experience with Andrea's own birth mother, we know how deeply personal and at times daunting this task may seem. Please know that, if chosen to be your child's parents, we will provide him or her with an open, supportive, and loving home with a reliable and diverse community ready to welcome them.

We first met seven years ago in Memphis, Tennessee while Andrea was in college and April was teaching in a public school system nearby. We married in early 2019, but we knew far before then that we wanted to grow our future family through adoption. April has many close family friends whose lives have been touched by adoption and has always felt called to adopt rather than have a biological child. Andrea was adopted as a baby, and it has always been her intent to adopt a child as well. We are excited to share her adoption story with the child. Together, we will support him or her through the process of learning about their adoption and will always be open to any questions along the way.

April is a teacher with a passion for making learning accessible and FUN. She has been teaching in one form or another for more than ten years. She truly loves teaching and enjoys connecting with each student individually. If she had it her way, she would tailor all lessons to each student's individual interests to enrich their learning experiences. She will be the best project and homework helper anyone could ask for!

Andrea is a doctor in the United States Army and is currently studying to become a surgeon. She loves to connect with her patients and their families and to help make them feel better. She especially loves that her job puts her in close contact with the men and women who put their lives on the line to help keep our country safe and free. She'll happily mend any cuts or bruises that happen in the process of growing up!

We cannot wait to begin to grow our family. We are excited to spend the rest of our lives seeking new and diverse experiences for our family. We are excited to celebrate the culture and traditions all around us, and we know that we will grow closer as a family as we widen our view of the world.

Please know how incredibly courageous we think you are, and what a blessing you are to our growing family. Our family will always honor the choice you've made. We will have open and honest conversations with our child about the selfless and brave choice you made to trust us to parent them. We are open to a conversation about the continued role you'd like to play in your child's life. We are so eager to get to know you and are happy to send updates, pictures, texts, or emails to maintain the relationship we build!
