Adoption in Our Lives
We both have always pictured ourselves having a family, and have wanted children for as long as we could remember. Not long after starting life's adventures together, we started the process to adopt our first son, Easton. It has truly been a life-changing experience. Easton has the best personality, and is truly a joy to have in our lives. He loves to laugh, cuddle, and adores his stuffed animal, "monkey." He takes it everywhere! (We actually have had to buy four monkeys and always keep a backup). He also loves to play outside, go to parks, and go for walks/bike rides, listen to music, and dance, so we do lots of that! Easton loves playing with his older cousins, and loves babies.
We have stayed in contact with Easton's birth mom. We share photos frequently, Facetime, text, email, exchange gifts, and have even taken a family vacation to her town and spent time with her and her family. We absolutely welcome am open adoption. That being said, we know each adoption may look differently, and we will honor the level of openness that you are comfortable with. We hope that we will be able to provide comfort and security to you in knowing that you made the right decision for you and your child, and that your child is being taken care of. From day one, we will make sure your child knows where they came from!
Our Family Traditions
Family traditions are very important to us and our families. Some of Bret's favorite family traditions growing up were going to his grandma's house on Christmas Eve, Christmas morning getting up really early and opening present with his siblings, and family vacations. Shane's favorite family traditions growing up were Christmas at his aunt's house and trick-or-treating on Halloween. Our families also love to celebrate all holidays and birthdays, and often have random get togethers.
Since adopting Easton, we have loved to start our own family traditions, and love that he gets to experience some of the traditions we did growing up. Some of the new traditions we have started with Easton include getting a fun Father's Day picture taken in a photo booth (We randomly did this at a mall during the time of our first Father's Day after becoming fathers, and someone said we should do it every year, so we have. We have the pictures hanging up, and it is so cool to see.), and going to the Festival of Lights during Christmas time. We would love to continue these traditions with another child.
Cultural diversity is so important to us, especially since our first adopted son is biracial. We are a diverse couple, and Bret comes from a blended family; his step-brother is biracial.
Growing up, we both had values instilled in us where everyone matters, love is love, and you can be whoever you want to be. We have started to instill these values into our first adopted son, and will continue instilling them into your child.
We will do our very best to maintain the culture and ethnicity of your child by exposing then to as many experiences as possible and making sure their birth culture/ethnicity is incorporated into their lives as much as possible.
We also think it is important that your child is exposed to many different cultures as they grow up and that they know just how diverse the world we live in is; that is what makes it so great!
Our House and Neighborhood
We live in a three-bedroom house that is located in central Illinois. We have a large fenced-in backyard and a large grassy lot to the side of our house, both offering plenty of room for play and outdoor activities.
We are located a few blocks from a zoo, a botanical garden, a grade school, and several parks. Plus, we have several stores, restaurants, and recreational areas close by. Many are within walking distance, including our favorite ice cream shop and a scenic roadway that we love to walk, ride bikes, and drive on to take in the beautiful scenery.
Our neighborhood is very kid friendly and you can often see many of the neighborhood kids playing in their front yards or riding their bicycles up and down the sidewalks. It also has an active community watch program to help ensure the safety of all residents and children. We would love to offer your child this neighborhood to grow up in.
Our Extended Families
Our families are a huge part of our lives and are very important to us.
Bret has one older brother, one step-brother who is the same age, and one older sister. His older brother and sister are both married and have children of their own.
Shane has two older sisters who both have children of their own.
Our families live very close to us and we see them often. Holidays and birthdays are always celebrated and include some of our annual traditions we love sharing together, like Christmas Eve dinner. Holidays are often very busy for us because we have many family celebrations to attend between the both of us. We also all love to get together just to spend time with each other and have fun. This includes game nights, random get togethers, and cooking out.
Our families are all beyond excited for us to be adopting again, and cannot wait for a new addition to the family! We and our families would love to have your child be part of our family!
From Us to You
Hello! Our names are Bret and Shane. We cannot event begin to imagine how tough of a decision it must be for you to be considering adoption for your child. We admire you for looking to do what is best for you both, and we want to thank you for taking the time to get to know us.
We started enjoying life's adventures together eight years ago, and tied the knot a short two years later. Our relationship thrives off being spontaneous, fun, goofy, and loving. Enjoying time with our son, family and friends, and taking random road trips are some of our favorite things to do. Very early on we both expressed how we wanted children, and to start our own families for as long as we could remember. We decided that adoption was right for us and started the process in 2017, and almost three years ago our little family grew when our first son Easton was adopted. It was truly a life changing experience, and he truly is the joy of our lives. Plus, he is ready to be a big brother!
We both come from families who are huge part of our lives. Everything from the celebration of birthdays and holidays to game nights and random get togethers are a regular part of what we do. Our families are excited to welcome your child into their lives, and we are all excited to continue these traditions together.
We think our strengths as parents are showing how diverse the world is, and instilling values into our children just like we had; where everyone matters, love is love, and they be supported for who they are and who they want to be. This is particularly important to us seeing how our first adopted son is biracial, we are a diverse couple, and one Bret comes from a blended family; his step-brother is biracial.
Bret became a Paramedic in 2011 and then graduated with his Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2017. He currently works as an EMS Program Director at a local ambulance company. Shane is a Biomedical Operations Manager at a large dialysis company. We both pride ourselves in helping our community as much as we can through our careers, and look forward to instilling these values in your child.
We would like you to know we are comfortable with as much or little communication you feel comfortable with. We would always make sure to document every milestone in your child's life and share it with you. We want our future child to know where they came from, and how they came to be with us. We will always be sure to tell them what an amazing person you are for bringing them into this world, and into our family. Whether you choose to keep distance or become a part of our extended family, please know your child will be loved, supported, and very well cared for by the both of us and our extended family!
With much love and respect,
Bret & Shane
