What it Means to Become Parents

With Our Sweet Puppy

Tom will be a great dad because he's fun and he's dependable. He loves to make kids laugh. He's also a children's doctor, so he works with little kids every day. He is an expert in what kids need to be safe and healthy, and is fully prepared to be a parent. It will also be such a joy to see Tom share his love of sports with a child. Tom enjoys basketball and will make a fantastic teammate and coach to a little one.

Julia will be a great mom because she's creative and loving. She has a quiet way of understanding what children need, and she is a patient and encouraging teacher. Julia makes children--and all people around her, for that matter--feel confident and loved. These qualities, coupled with years of babysitting experience, make Julia our nieces' favorite aunt. Julia is also a skilled artist. It will be wonderful to seek her share her passions for drawing, painting, and baking with a child.

We will truly enjoy raising and nurturing our child. We have a lot of love to give and we can't wait to embrace the whole experience of being parents. We look forward to the love, laughter, challenge, and wonder that lies ahead!

About Us

Lots of Love

Julia is a lawyer. She loves that she is always learning something new. Outside of work, Julia enjoys painting and drawing, running, baking, reading, and chatting with friends. Julia speaks Spanish, Hebrew, and a little Arabic and Farsi, and has lived in Spain and Israel. She grew up in Boston with her parents, brother, and dog. Friends describe Julia as kind, genuine, and loving.

Tom is a pediatrician at a children's hospital. He loves helping kids and learning about science. Outside of work, Tom enjoys playing basketball, spending time with friends, and rooting for local sports teams. Tom grew up in rural Michigan, with his parents, brother, and dogs. Friends describe Tom as easy going, funny, and smart.

Cultural Diversity

Being open-minded and celebrating diversity is important to us. If we become a transracial or multicultural family through adoption, we will teach our child to be proud of who they are. We will incorporate our child's culture into our home, read books, go to cultural events, and surround our child with role models and friends who look like them. We recognize that our own experiences are limited, and we will not hesitate to reach out to family, friends, and the community for help.

We have taken a course on transracial adoption, read books, and had thoughtful discussions with friends about what it means to raise a child of another race or culture. We look forward to a lifetime of learning.

We are comfortable blending traditions, and in a way have begun to do this by incorporating Jewish religious traditions from Julia's family into our lives, while still celebrating Christmas and Easter with Tom's side of the family. Our extended family is diverse in terms of religion, race, and nationality. We believe that the richness of our differences is something to be celebrated and loved.

Whatever form our family takes, we will feel blessed and grateful, and do all that we can to honor every dimension of our child's identity.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We love our home and neighborhood. We live in an energetic college town in Michigan. Our community is ideal for families. Our neighborhood is friendly and full of kids. There are great schools, parks, and ice cream shops. We love to take our Golden Retriever puppy for walks around the neighborhood, and could easily see ourselves pushing a stroller.

Because of the university in our town, there is always something fun and interesting going on. From football games to science fairs, concerts to art exhibits, these events make it easy to engage and connect with the community. It is very welcoming!

Our home is charming, bright, and calm. It was built in 1937 and has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining room, and partially finished basement. Big windows let in lots of sunlight, so there are plenty of good spots to cuddle up with a book on a sunny afternoon. We have a fenced in backyard with lots of trees, flowers, and a vegetable garden. We can't wait to spend time there with a little one.

Our Extended Families

Cozy Times With Cousins

We are deeply rooted in our community. As parents, we'll have tons of support from family and friends who live nearby. Game nights, going to concerts hosted by the local university, and visiting museums are some of the things we love to do on weekends with our friends and their children.

Tom's side of the family lives nearby and we see them weekly. We have so much fun spending time with our little nieces--doing art projects, decorating cookies, drawing with sidewalk chalk, riding bicycles, and playing tag.

Every year, 40+ relatives get together for the big family Christmas party. Our Thanksgiving tradition is to celebrate in Boston with Julia's side of the family.

Our family is proud to be diverse in terms of religion, race, and nationality. Our family is openhearted, loving, and will embrace a little one with open arms. We can't wait to share our love with a baby.

From Us to You

Hi there. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We know this is a challenging decision. We admire your strength, love, and resolve. We feel so lucky to have come across your path.

We met nearly 10 years ago, when Tom was in medical school and Julia was in law school, both at the university in the town where we now live. Friends introduced us at the law school Halloween party. Tom was dressed as a zombie, and Julia had a nerdy law-themed costume, Lady Justice. We've been together ever since.

After we graduated, we got married. Our wedding was on a sunny autumn day, and we were surrounded by friends and family. We have great memories of the beautiful ceremony, packed dance floor, and yummy cake. We are lucky to live close to Tom's family, in a spunky city that we both love. We have a loving, stable relationship, and are excited to become parents!

The chance to raise a child would be a dream come true for us. We have always wanted to be parents and have so much love to give. Adoption is the answer to our prayers. We are ready to be parents, and we have never been more sure of anything in our lives.

On a practical level, we're ready to be parents because we are married and have a loving, stable relationship. We've been together for nearly 10 years. We own our home, and are financially prepared. We've been at our jobs as a doctor and a lawyer for years, and are comfortable taking as much leave time as possible. Soon-to-be grandparents are lovingly awaiting the day when they can help out too. We've read (what feels like) every baby book, and have picked out the perfect carseat.

From an emotional standpoint, our whole hearts are in this. We want more than ever to take care of a baby. Waking up for midnight feedings, diaper changes, and everything else, are things that we are longing to do. The privilege of being a parent is something we do not take for granted and we will savor every moment.

Our dreams for a child are filled with love, and you are part of that. We want your child to have a loving relationship with you, and to know and be proud of who you are. We will send letters and pictures to you. We hope that our relationship with you grows over time, to include calls, texts, e-mails, and visits.

We are so overjoyed to become parents, and excited for what lies ahead. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for considering us. We truly cannot wait to get to know you and to begin our journey together.

With love and kindness,

Tom & Julia
