Dallin & Gideon
We're so honored that you'd like to learn more about us. Family means the world to us, and we can't wait to welcome another child with love and care. We'd love to show you more about who we are and what it would be like to be part of our family.
Adoption in Our Lives
We were so fortunate to adopt our daughter Emma in early 2020. We love and adore her, and she is the most precious person in our lives. Over her first year, each single day has been exciting as she grows and learns new skills.
Our journey in Emma's adoption began a few months before she was born—we started sharing emails and texts with Emma's birth mother after we were matched. We really enjoyed learning more about her background, interests, and family traditions. In fact, we've been able to continue one of those traditions for Emma: in her birth mother's family, they pick middle names to be based on the parent's first name. So Emma's middle name is based off of her mother's first name as well. We look forward to incorporating even more traditions for a second child.
Emma's mother is very special to us—she gave us the greatest possible gift that we will always be so thankful for. We've been communicating and sharing pictures and videos with her ever since the adoption. We plan to do a visit once a year as well. Emma's mother has told us how much she loves getting updates and we love sending them. We are looking forward to being able to share that with our next child and their mother as well.
Our Leisure Time
More than anything else, we are geeks. We love science fiction and fantasy—Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, all the Marvel superhero movies and shows. We have a great group of friends with whom we regularly meet for dinner and board game nights. We find science and history articles super interesting.
During the day most of our free time is spent with our daughter Emma. We love playing with her! It has been such a joy watching her grow up into her own little person over the last year.
Gideon bikes twice a week and reads lots of fiction novels—he loves getting lost in fantastical settings with castle politics and heroism. He wants to encourage our children to be imaginative as well.
Dallin likes drawing and learning languages—he's currently taking Dutch lessons twice a week. We think it would be great for a child to learn another language. He also loves building things and has a huge collection of elaborate Lego and puzzle sets.
We also love traveling! In 2018, we went to the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2019 we went to China and Hong Kong. What a culture shock that was! We think it's important for a child to experience different cultures and famous sites around the world. We haven't been able to go anywhere since COVID, but we're looking forward to traveling again—this time with our daughter Emma and, we hope, with another child as well!
Our Family Traditions
Dallin grew up in a suburb of Atlanta in a small house, but with a big family. He was raised Mormon and his parents were very religious. Family was a big focus of the religion, the idea being that "family is forever." And while he's not personally religious, he believes he'd impart some of those same values of family and being there for one another. Growing up, Dallin's family lived paycheck-to-paycheck. By the time he was a teenager, he saw how hard his parents had to work just to pay the bills and put food on the table. It made him appreciate the value of hard work and self-discipline, and he wants to make sure our children learn to be responsible and mature as they grow up as well.
For Gideon, he was born and raised in Florida. Gideon's mother is from the South—you can hear it in her accent—and he was raised on down-to-earth Southern recipes: chicken, mashed potatoes, meatloaf, cornbread, you name it. His mother taught him how to cook, so hearty, home-cooked meals are a staple in our family. Gideon fondly remembers his family summer vacations—the five of them piling into the family van to see all the different parts of the country. Those road trips were always historical and educational: science and art museums, cultural landmarks, and national parks. He'd love to continue the tradition with our own family, taking children to famous places across the country.
Our House and Neighborhood
We recently moved into a beautiful, modern home on a half-acre of land in Florida that we built with children in mind. There are four large bedrooms—plenty of room for everyone—with wood floors and lots of windows with white shutters and natural light. There's a big, grassy fenced-in back yard with trees and bushes that's perfect for playing in. Right behind our house is a sweet-smelling citrus grove and a wooded area that gives lots of nice shade.
We have two dogs—Loki and Samson. Both are mixed breeds, but Samson is part-Beagle. They both love being with people and will do anything to be pet and get belly rubs! They've gotten along so well with our daughter Emma and love when she snuggles against them. We know they will be great with any child who joins our family.
The neighborhood has been wonderful—so many families with kids around of all ages. Being so close to lakes and wooded groves really makes the neighborhood feel quiet and clean. Every day we go on walks around the neighborhood for a little exercise, and there's always other children playing with their friends in the grass and driveways. There's even a community playground that's been very popular with the kids. Sometimes the community puts together holiday events like sidewalk art competitions and BBQ get-togethers. And of course, we're fortunate to live so close to Disney World—we know a child would have lots of fun going there all the time!
Our Extended Families
Our families have been incredibly supportive of our plan to adopt and can't wait to meet a new baby. Both sides of the family live throughout the Southeast, so we're able to visit each other on holidays. In fact, Gideon's parents live just 20 minutes away and we see them quite often. We think it's great that there is one set of grandparents close by.
Both Gideon's brother and sister each have two boys. Any child who joins our family will have lots of cousins to meet and grow up with in addition to our daughter Emma.
Getting together for holidays is one of our favorite family traditions. For Thanksgiving, we recently hosted each of our families together. Our young nephews played with race cars around the house the whole weekend. And they got to know and play with our daughter Emma. Because we love board games so much, we make it a point to find a board game to play that works for the whole family.
Dallin and his family always make time every few weeks to get together for Zoom family calls. It's a great way to see how everyone is doing. They are all looking forward to meeting a new child.
From Us to You
Growing up as gay men, we used to never think we could one day marry and raise a family. How times have changed! We are so fortunate to have been able to adopt our daughter Emma. And thanks to your courageous, selfless decision to consider an adoption plan, we hope to be able to have another child as well. We always thought having siblings would be the best environment for kids to grow up in. We want you to know that we will give a child the best life that we can possibly give - a great education and love from us and all of our family.
We are confident we will be strong and loving fathers for your child and recognize that you would always be their mother. We will make sure the child knows how much love you have for them and how you made our dream of a complete family possible.
We've always wanted to be dads -family is very important to both of us. We are excited to raise another child that we can love, teach, and help have the best life possible. In 2018 we built a big, beautiful house so that we would have a perfect place for our growing family. We're extremely proud of how it turned out and can't wait to share it with another child!
We met in 2010 at a coffee shop in Atlanta and began living together shortly after that. A couple years later, we moved down to Florida, and in 2014 we got married. Early on in our relationship we both shared that we wanted to adopt one day, and that we wanted to make sure there was more than one child so that they would grow up with siblings. We have already found being a parent as a way to truly devote ourselves to the well-being and growth of another human being.
Gideon is a lawyer and runs his own small law firm. The office, in fact, is just a few minutes away from our house! One of the big advantages to running his own practice instead of working for a larger firm is that Gideon sets his own hours - he almost always comes home just after 5 PM so that we can eat dinner and enjoy the evening together as a family. His schedule is also very flexible, so he'll easily be able to take time off to help out at home or for any important events. And during COVID he's switched to working from home, so it's been even more time to spend with the family.
Dallin loves being a stay-at-home dad. It's important for us to have one parent stay at home to make sure that our children have all the attention and care that they need. And, with Gideon's parents just a short drive away, a new baby will certainly have lots of family for support!
We have been educating ourselves to best understand what you may be going through right now as you decide whether to place your child for adoption. We've learned how important it is to be open about the adoption for both you and the child. We would love to include you in what the child thinks of his or her family. It would be great to learn about you and some of your own family values and traditions. We think it could be helpful for the child for us to incorporate those traditions into our own as the child gets older.
Of course, we will be looking forward to sharing pictures and letters with you as time goes on--we hope to make you proud and put you at ease over your courageous decision to consider adoption. Ever since we adopted our daughter Emma, we have been sharing updates and pictures to her mother every month, so we'd love to continue that with your child if you would like.
Our ultimate goal would be to raise your child to become an intelligent, caring, successful, and healthy adult. We think it would be such a privilege to open our home to your child and give them a life full of love and opportunity. Thank you so much for considering us as adoptive parents - we are truly grateful.
