Gene & Pete
We are really excited to grow our family, and we so appreciate you taking the time to check out our profile! We have so much love, fun, and support to offer, and we sincerely hope that you will consider us to be your child's adoptive parents. We look forward to getting to know you, and we hope you do too!
Our friends joke that we are constantly making memories of a lifetime every day, but it’s true. We love to get out there and see the world. Whether it’s hiking or playing in the snow, we love mountains. Peter snowboards, and Gene has skied since he was a child. We are fortunate enough to have witnessed the breath taking views of the Swiss Alps, Canadian mountains, and America’s mountains from East to West. Given our passion for being outdoors, we went to South Africa on our honeymoon—a vacation we will never forget! We went on a safari where we saw all of Africa’s Big Five animals (elephant, lion, rhino, water buffalo, and leopard). We also went whale watching and shark diving (in a cage!) with Great White sharks. Although it might seem scary, they are gentle animals that will mesmerize you with their beauty.
Our favorite place, however, will always be Paris. Peter proposed to Gene with the Eiffel Tower in the background. We’ve visited the halls of the Palace of Versailles, and walked its beautiful gardens. A few years ago, we took our parents to Paris and our families also fell in love with the city. We can’t wait to take our child!
Addressing Cultural Diversity
Addressing cultural diversity in our lives is extremely important. The past year has been even more difficult for both the African American and Asian American communities. With close friends from both, we share in the struggle for racial justice. During Lent, our church established an educational series and ways to volunteer to support the African American community’s march towards justice. As part of his legal career, Peter is a member of his firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee where he advises the firm’s Management Committee on ways to support diversity and inclusion. He has also taken on a number of diverse clients as pro bono clients as a way of affecting positive change. Gene is passionate about his grant work, which focuses on racial and socio-economic equality. In addition, this past year a group of our closest friends committed to taking steps to learn about different cultural issues affecting diverse communities. Each week, we read a book, article, or watched a documentary. Not only did we learn from these educational materials, we committed to take action in ways that would help lessen the harmful societal effects of those issues. The arc of history bends towards justice, and Gene and Peter are both committed to being channels for positive change.
What Made Us Who we are Today
Gene learned from his mother early on the values of hard work and importance of being kind. His mom Lorri is the kindest woman who constantly gives whatever she can to whoever needs it the most. As a guidance counselor, she gives, gives, and gives to children who need it the most. In addition, his late maternal grandmother exhibited unconditional love. As soon as she met Peter, she embraced him as a member of the family. Gene and Peter have great memories from the quality time we had with her before she passed. These caring traits were passed on to Gene and made him who he is today. Many friends and family rely on Gene as a member of their support system.
Peter’s mom and dad made him who he is today. His dad always worked hard to make sure they always had their needs met. Although Peter didn’t really know at the time, there were tough financial times while he was a kid. His mom and dad worked hard to make sure the kids never knew it because they loved them so much. They made a lot out of little, providing great opportunities where Peter played soccer, became a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, camped with Boy Scouts, and was alter boy in his church. Watching his parents work hard to provide a dream childhood, Peter looks forward to providing for his growing family!
Our Extended Families
Gene has two sisters and seven adorable nieces and nephews. Peter is the oldest of four boys. When we gather with family we center our time around good food, hearing about the kids sports and activities, and retelling lots of funny memories. Dogs play a big part in our lives and our families’ lives as well! Both Gene’s mom and Pete’s parents are excitedly waiting to spoil more grandchildren.
Gene’s mom is a school guidance counselor. Pete’s mom is a nurse and while his dad is retired, he stays busy with home projects, woodworking, and volunteering at a local food bank. Both families live a short 3-4 hour drive away and we get together at least once a month.
Once we have a child, however, we expect those get-togethers will be much more frequent! Pete’s parents live close to the beach, so we enjoy spending time there hanging out in the sand, fishing, and having crab fests. Your child will have lots of love and time spent with our families, having fun building sandcastles!
Our House and Neighborhood
We bought our forever home last year in a beautiful area of Virginia, with rolling hills, streams, and beautiful views. We love to be outside - so we spend lots of time with our dogs on our 3-acre property, on the back deck, and walking the beautiful neighborhood (which can be quite the workout with all the hills!). Our neighborhood is ideal for active families - with easy access to the country’s top schools, shopping, historic downtown, and an access point to a walking and biking trail. We are in horse country, so there will be lost of opportunities for seeing ponies, and perhaps even learning how to ride.
We’ve only been here for a year, but one of our favorite memories was handing out candy to all of the neighborhood kids trick-or-treating this past Halloween while our dogs were dressed up as an alligator and a hot dog. We love our house too - it has five bedrooms and a big kitchen, where we spend most of our time cooking, baking, eating, and just hanging out. Nearby are beautiful parks, and our club pool has water slides and so many fun activities for kids.
From Us to You
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for learning more about us and considering us to be your baby’s adoptive parents. Given that you probably read lots of letters like this, we truly appreciate you taking the time to read ours.
We want you to know that while you are making an important decision, we hope the thought of your baby being surrounded by our love, caring family members, laughter, fun, and all the opportunities a parent could want for their child will help you through it. We admire your selflessness already for all you are doing for your child, and will strive to be the best adoptive parents you could ask for.
We have been married for over five years now, and welcoming your child into our family with open arms would mean the world to us! We hope you will choose us to be your baby’s adoptive parents - what an honor and blessing to us that would be. As parents, we would provide your child with not only an education in one of the best school districts in the country, but we would also teach them from a young age our values: family, kindness, generosity, respect, and a strong work ethic.
Traveling is a passion of ours - to experience as many other cultures as possible, relax, explore, eat, and have fun. Whether it is a beach vacation, the mountains, other places in America, or other places in the world, our interest in travel continues to only grow with every place we visit. We hope to travel with our growing family for years to come, and showing your child the world would be a top priority for us. Over the next few years, we hope to see as many of the national parks as we can. Yellowstone and Acadia are on the top of our list!
As a gay couple with friends from many different cultures, many of which have adopted themselves, we welcome diversity in our lives. We believe surrounding ourselves with diversity helps us to lead more educated, understanding, and fulfilling lives. The world would be a better place if everyone took more time to think about walking in the shoes of others.
We will share updates and stories with you on your child’s life through letters and pictures so you can see them grow. Whether it is a day of visiting the monuments in Washington, D.C., or walking with our two dogs along the beautiful hills of our neighborhood, we will have lots to share. We will be honest with your child about his or her adoption from the very start so they know how much you did for them and how much they are loved.
Thank you again for taking the time to consider us to be your child’s adoptive parents. You and your baby are in our thoughts and prayers as you go through your adoption journey. We know this decision isn’t easy, and we appreciate the thoughtfulness and time you put into it.
