Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

Happy Together

Christina loves Shannon's sense of humor and the same can be said about Shannon loving Christina's sense of humor. We both laugh often, crack jokes, keep each other entertained, and there's never a dull moment. Both Christina and Shannon enjoy each other's company, thirst for adventure, passion for travel, and love of food. Together we have made many memories by trying new foods, discovering new places, and laughing all along the way.

Christina loves Shannon's ability to provide emotional empathy during difficult times. Shannon has been a great sounding board throughout the relationship for Christina. Christina enjoys how congenial Shannon is on a daily basis. Shannon's love language is physical touch and she gives the best hugs when Christina needs it most.

Shannon loves Christina's selfless nature. She takes care of everyone in the house (cats included) with incredible detail. Her love language is acts of service and each of us reap that benefit day to day. She's a great conceptualizer and regularly the handy one in the house with different projects. She can also answer most Jeopardy questions with ease and is a regular source of information if Alexa falls short.

What Makes Us Unique

Christina Ready for a Japanese Festival

Christina was raised by parents who loved rock 'n' roll. Listening to the radio all the time growing up shaped Christina's early taste in music. Her initial roots in rock 'n' roll branched out to metal, indie, and electronic music as she grew older. She's been to countless shows in Chicago for very famous musical artists all the way to underground shows for lesser-known artists.

Christina also fell in love with Asian culture as a kid. She used to watch Kung Fu Theatre and Samurai Sunday every weekend. That love of Asian culture blossomed as she grew up and became an adult — she became Buddhist in 2009, her favorite foods to cook at home are Japanese ramen and Vietnamese pho (all from scratch), she owns an antique silk hand-painted kimono, she participates in weekly origami classes through the Japanese cultural center in Chicago, she watches a lot of different kinds of anime, many of her favorite musicians and artists are Japanese, and she loves both Asian horror movies and psychological thrillers.

Shannon Listening to Music

At a very early age, Shannon fell in love with music. She would pull herself up to the TV every time the MASH theme song played before the show, she sang Hall and Oates songs loudly all the time (even in the grocery store), and begged her mom to let her play violin after seeing Itzhak Perlman play in Big Bird's nest. As a result, she's played violin since the age of 5 and traveled all around the Midwest playing in select orchestras growing up. Her love of music expanded as she grew older and she discovered both alternative and electronic music. As she grew older, she decided to become an electronic DJ. She saved up money to buy her first two turntables and mixer. Her initiative propelled her into being the first female DJ in the Lincoln and Omaha Nebraska electronic music scene.

Shannon fell in love with technology as well. She didn't go to college for computer science, rather she fell into more and more technical roles as a direct result of being a good troubleshooter. For example, she had to figure out how to connect her mixer to computer for recorded club demos and that became the spark. She kept figuring out more and more about computers and eventually landed a job that invested in her technical education. The more she learns, the more she's thankful for finding a passion later in life that she could turn into a career!

Cultural Diversity

We are open to any child, regardless of race or gender. We live in an area where there are many different avenues to provide a racial and gender identity, even if our race or identity differs. Any place we feel we come up short, there are books, groups we can join, and support we can find locally, since Chicago is right next door. For example, if we adopt an African American child, know that we've been going through hair care training. This training is provided by a hair salon that is 1 town over from where we live. The owner has been very encouraging about our adoption and supportive of providing us with ample knowledge to properly care for African American hair. It's been helpful finding support like this at a time that's emotional for us as well. We love living so close to a very diverse city that can provide us with guidance, assistance, and support in giving the child the best care possible.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live in one of the first suburbs on the west side of Chicago, Illinois. Our community has a lot of parks and events for children in the area. One of the great events for kids and adults takes place on or around July 4th. The city has a big parade and lights off fireworks for residents.

We live within walking distance of what is called "Restaurant Row." There are approximately 10 different restaurants that offer up a lot of unique tastes, which aren't typical to the American palette.

Downtown Chicago Park

Chicago is right next door, so we have access to a wealth of activities: museums, art exhibits, sporting events, live music, outdoor festivals, etc. Many times, we like to go be tourists in our own city for that very reason. Additionally, any interest the child picks growing up, we have the ability to provide (even if the child picks an obscure hobby), since Chicago is so close.

Our home is a 4 bedroom Chicago-style bungalow. It was built in 1952 and rehabbed in the 1990's. The rehabilitation opened up the first floor quite a bit and removed 1 of the bedrooms. There's a lot of space on the first floor now as a result. The rehab also added more to the back of the house. There's a finished basement and a customized master suite on the second floor. It represents our unique taste in art and decor.

Our Extended Families

Christina's Brother & His Family

We are both the eldest children within our families. Christina's brother, sister-in-law, nephew, and parents live about 30 miles away from us. Christina's dad works as a mill operator at a paint company and her mom is retired. Christina's brother is a teacher within the Illinois public school system and her sister-in-law is a stay-at-home mom to our nephew. Christina's nephew is super excited to have a cousin to play with!

Shannon & Our Nephew

Shannon's two sisters, their spouses, and both parents live in Nebraska, spread between Lincoln and Omaha. Her sister closest in age is a speech pathologist for the Omaha public school system and her husband is an analyst at a financial services company in Omaha. Her youngest sister is a case manager at a social services company in Lincoln and her spouse is a landscaper in Lincoln. Her dad is a retired military general for the state of Nebraska as well as a retired director of security for Lincoln Public Schools. Her mom is a retired Lincoln public schools teacher.

Since Christina's family lives closer, we see them more often. We try to get back to Nebraska at least twice a year. With the adoption, we presume the Nebraskan side of the family will make more visits to meet and hang out with the newest member of the family!

From Us to You

At this point, you're looking for a wonderful home and future for your child. We're looking to share our love and lives with a child in our family. Perhaps we are looking for each other? Thank you for taking the time and the patience to learn more about us and the family we want to build! We hope you come away with a sense of peace, happiness, love, and joy that you've made the right decision.

We understand that this is a very difficult time. Although we will never know exactly what you are feeling, we empathize on the wide range of emotions that the adoption process makes birth families feel. We hope that our unique experiences can guide each of us, as well as assist in the process.

We have every intention of keeping in contact with our adopted child's birth family. We think it would be in the best interest of your child to know who his or her birth relatives are. Identity is key throughout this process and the child is the center of the universe that we are trying to create. We want what's best for both the child and mother. We want the child to know their story, their history, and their roots as much as possible. We would like to make a workable plan with you for things like photos, emails, phone calls, and visits. We believe open adoption is a healthy option for everyone involved. We believe open adoptions provide a solid foundation and a great opportunity for relationships to flourish throughout their life.

We want to make memories together throughout the child's existence. Between travel, different food, pets, sports events, music, our love of reading and trivia, along with culture, we believe we'd be a good fit for enriching that child's life and then bringing you along for the ride.

Our own struggles with infertility lead us to the here and now. We couldn't be happier to take on the responsibility of parenting your child and transforming them into well rounded adults. While we cannot promise a life free from pain or hurt, we can promise that we will be by their side throughout any obstacles that may arise for guidance, love, and support. We are committed to doing the best we can throughout any phase of their life.

The words "thank you" don't seem like enough to convey our gratitude. You will give us a tremendous gift and opportunity that no words could accurately describe. We'll have an opportunity to call your child our son or daughter and that means the absolute world to us at this point in our journey as a family.

We know the decision will not be easy. We hope that we can fulfill your desire to find a loving family for your child. If you feel that our family is the right one for your child, we would be honored to welcome your child into our home. We are ready to begin this journey with you.
