6 Reasons People Choose American Adoptions

What Makes Our Adoption Agency Unique?

What makes an adoption agency special? Is it how big it is? Is it how many adoptions it completes each year? Or is it something else?

American Adoptions believes what makes an adoption agency special is the genuine care it has for its clients. This comes in the form of emotional support, financial responsibility, honesty, a commitment to your family, and a promise of completing your adoption goals in a timely manner.

We believe these characteristics define us and separate us from other adoption agencies. And that’s why, for more than 25 years, thousands of prospective birth and adoptive parents have trusted American Adoptions to guide them through the life-changing journey of adoption.

With involvement in more than 300 adoptions each year, American Adoptions is one of the largest, most successful agencies in the United States. But what makes us so special?

In addition to the comprehensive services provided by many adoption professionals, our agency offers five unique advantages for our clients:

1. Short and Accurate Wait Times for Adoptive Parents — and a Variety of Options for Prospective Birth Parents

To keep wait times low, our agency partners with a professional marketing company to provide nationwide advertising to pregnant women considering adoption. Our unparalleled internet advertising ensures women seeking adoption information find our website, increasing the number of opportunities available through our agency — and, therefore, decreasing wait times.

Through our marketing and networking efforts, most of our adoptive families first hold their babies between 1 to 12 months after joining our agency.

With our national scope, our agency is also less susceptible to shifting social trends and policy changes in individual states — making our adoption numbers more stable and our wait times more predictable from year to year. And, unlike many professionals, we carefully monitor our placement numbers to ensure our quoted wait times are accurate and reasonable.

This benefits expectant mothers considering adoption, as well. American Adoptions’ national scope allows us to work with a wide variety of adoptive families from diverse situations and backgrounds. If you’re considering adoption for your unplanned pregnancy, our agency gives you more options to choose from and the ability to be as specific as you want when determining the type of family you want for your baby.

American Adoptions will always help you find the perfect parents for your child — no matter how long it takes.

2. Financial Protection and Assistance

We understand how much of a commitment adoption is, both emotionally and financially. That’s why American Adoptions is committed to protecting the financial interests of all parties involved.

Many of our families have saved up for months or even years to grow their families through adoption, and losing these funds due to an adoption disruption could drastically affect their dreams of becoming parents.

It is inevitable that a small percentage of women pursuing adoption change their minds and decide to parent, leaving these families emotionally disappointed, and with some agencies, financially devastated. But not with American Adoptions.

American Adoptions’ Risk-Sharing Program refunds most (if not all) of the moneys you’ve invested into the disrupted adoption, such as living expenses, medical expenses, termination expenses and agency fees, giving you another chance of adding a child to your family. American Adoptions does not automatically roll over the money into another adoption; we return the money directly back to you so you can reinvest in the process whenever you’re ready.

And, if you’re an expectant parent considering adoption for your baby? You receive financial support, too, in the form of living and pregnancy-related expenses. Your adoption specialist will create a financial plan for your pregnancy and help you receive any living assistance you are eligible for (based on your situation and your state’s laws). Placing a child for adoption will always be free and we will do all we can to reduce your financial burden during this emotional process.

3. 24/7 Support for Prospective Birth Mothers

During an unplanned pregnancy, expectant mothers are desperate for answers and support — and 90 percent of them will first turn to the internet to find what they’re looking for. If you’re in this situation, you may type in hundreds of questions as you decide what to do next. And, because American Adoptions partners with professional media specialists, our website appears on the first page of search results for thousands of those search terms.

There’s a lot of confusing and misleading information about adoption out there, and our agency wants to ensure you get the honest, unbiased information you deserve. That’s why we work so hard to make our website available to you; if you’re considering adoption for your child, you can easily find the answers you’re looking for to make the best choice for your situation.

If you decide to contact our agency about your unplanned pregnancy, you will never talk to an answering machine. Our staff is available 24/7 at 1-800-ADOPTION to provide all the support you may need during your unplanned pregnancy and adoption journey. We will never try to pressure you into choosing adoption; instead, we will provide free, unbiased information about all of your unplanned pregnancy options to help you decide what’s right for you. And, if you’re interested in adoption, we will answer all of your questions for free. You will be under no obligation to move forward with adoption unless you’re confident it’s the right choice for you.

A pregnant woman can contact our agency at all times throughout the morning, day and night. So, if you’re considering placing your child for adoption, you will have access to all the support and counseling you need at every step along the way. This is important if you’re an adoptive parent, too; our 24/7 support to expectant mothers means more women move forward with the process, and there are more adoption opportunities created through our agency than those who don’t provide 24/7 support.

The wellbeing and safety of the prospective birth mother and the health of the baby is our biggest concern, which is why our specialists are always available to talk to women about their unplanned pregnancies, wherever they’re at in the decision-making process.

4. Adoptive Family Video Profiles

At American Adoptions, all adoptive families have their own Adoptive Family Video Profile. These videos fill in the gaps that print profiles simply can’t communicate, such as the family’s personalities and desire to become parents through adoption.

What does this mean for adoptive parents? It means the prospective birth mothers considering their family will get a better idea of exactly who they are — and what her child’s life will be like, should she place her baby with them. In fact, through research and communication with birth mothers, we have learned that these videos are one of the main reasons they chose to work with American Adoptions.

If you’re a prospective birth mother, it means you can use adoptive family videos to see a couple interact with each other and their family members. You can get a better sense of what they are like before you chat with them over the phone or meet them in person. A video profile can help you feel more certain of your choice and of the people you’re choosing to raise your baby. Building this trust early will come in handy later, too; it will help you and the adoptive parents develop a stronger open adoption relationship, lasting for years to come.

5. Open Adoption for All

At American Adoptions, open adoption relationships are an important part of what we do. Most modern adoptions today involve direct contact between birth parents and adoptive parents — and our agency’s adoptions are no different. In fact, because so many birth mothers choose open adoption relationships, we require all adoptive parents to be open to a certain degree of contact before they even go active with our agency.

Pregnant women who work with American Adoptions have complete control over this aspect (and all other aspects) of their adoption. They get to decide just how much and what type of contact they want with adoptive parents and their child in the future — whether it’s pictures and letters, emails and texts, or even in-person visits. Getting to see their children grow up happy and healthy is often the best proof for birth mothers that they’ve made the right decision.

Open adoption also benefits adoptive parents and adoptees. Direct communication with birth parents means adoptive parents always have updated medical information for their child, as well as answers to their child’s questions. A child who grows up in an open adoption appreciates their birth parents’ decision and often has higher levels of self-confidence and pride about their adoption story.

We’ve been in adoption for more than 25 years, and we’ve seen what’s worked. Open adoption is one of the biggest indicators of success in an infant placement, and we are dedicated to providing that option to all prospective birth mothers who desire it.

6. All the Services You Need in One Place

Unlike some professionals, which may require you to “outsource” some of the services necessary for a successful adoption, American Adoptions is truly a full-service adoption agency. We’ll be with you through every step, from your first phone call to the day a placement is made and beyond. With American Adoptions, you’ll have your own dedicated adoption specialist to provide support throughout the process, and you won’t have to juggle multiple professionals on your own.

When needed, we will also provide referrals to and coordinate with additional professionals from our network. That way, prospective birth parents and adoptive parents will never have to handle that responsibility on their own — and instead can focus on a successful adoption process.

Counseling, practical support, case management and more — American Adoptions can do it all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
