How to Find the Shortest Adoption Wait Times

5 Factors To Help Speed up the Adoption Process

If you’re considering adoption, one of your first questions is likely:

"What is the fastest way to adopt?"

You’re not alone. Most hopeful parents want to grow their family as soon as possible. But adoption wait times can vary widely. Some families adopt within a year, while others spend several years waiting.

The difference usually comes down to how adoption opportunities are created and how many families are waiting for them.

We encourage you to learn more about what actually goes into wait times and how to spot the difference between accurate and misleading wait times estimates.

Finding the Shortest Adoption Wait Times

Adoption opportunities are relatively rare.

Did you know: Only 1 out of 100 women will choose adoption.

As you can see, you have to reach a lot of pregnant women to find likely opportunities. At American Adoptions, families typically adopt in about 12 months on average.

So what helps create shorter adoption wait times?

Below are five key factors that can influence how quickly you are matched.

1. National Outreach and Visibility

Today, 95% of expectant mothers begin researching adoption online.

If an agency is not visible where women are searching, fewer adoption opportunities will exist. Fewer opportunities usually means longer wait times.

National adoption agencies are often able to reach women across the country through online outreach, education and advertising. This broader visibility helps create more opportunities for waiting families.

At American Adoptions, our national outreach helps connect adoptive families with expectant mothers nationwide, increasing the likelihood of finding an adoption opportunity sooner.

As you can see here, web traffic can vary widely, and that directly impacts an agency's ability to find quality adoption opportunities.

2. How Many Families Are Waiting

One of the most overlooked factors in adoption wait times is how many families are already waiting in a program.

Even if an agency creates adoption opportunities, wait times can grow if too many families are waiting for those opportunities.

For example:

If an agency has 200 waiting families but completes 50 adoptions each year, the math suggests a wait of around four years.

Agencies that carefully manage the number of families in their programs are better able to maintain consistent, predictable timelines.

We monitor our program to help maintain a near 1:1 ratio between adoption opportunities and waiting families.

3. Strong Family Profiles

Your adoptive family profile plays a major role in how quickly you are chosen by an expectant mother.

With American Adoptions, families create both written profiles and adoption video profiles, which allow expectant mothers to see and hear from you in a more personal way.

These profiles help give expectant mothers a clearer sense of who you are and what life might look like for their child, which can help them feel more confident in their decision.

When you work with our agency, you’ll have your own adoption video profile that highlights your:

  • Personalities

  • Interests

  • Other family members

  • Pets

  • Home

  • Neighborhood

  • Excitement to become parents

The more effectively your profile connects with expectant mothers, the more likely you are to be selected.

4. Flexibility in Your Adoption Preferences

Your openness to different adoption situations can directly affect your wait time.

Families who are open to a wider range of situations are typically shown to more expectant mothers, which can increase the likelihood of a sooner match.

Some of the factors that may influence your wait time include:

• Race of the child
• Gender
• Medical history
• Substance exposure during pregnancy
• Type of post-adoption contact

For example, a family open to multiple situations may be considered for more opportunities than a family with very specific preferences.

If your wait time is longer than expected, reviewing your preferences with your adoption professional can help you better understand your options.

5. Patience and Realistic Expectations

Even with the right structure in place, adoption timelines can vary.

Expectant mothers choose adoptive families based on many personal factors, and some aspects of the process are outside of your control.

While there are steps you can take to improve your chances of a shorter wait, it’s important to approach adoption with realistic expectations and patience.

Working with an experienced adoption professional can help guide you through the process and provide clarity along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
