Staring down at a positive pregnancy test, suddenly everything changes. What do you do now?

Women of all ages, of all walks of life, have been in your shoes. Young, old, married or not, an unplanned pregnancy affects everyone it touches. Only you can determine the course of life that is right for you and your child - remember it is your decision.

As the largest adoption agency of our kind, American Adoptions has a thing or two to say about the benefits of adoption, but also about the benefits of choosing American Adoptions, should you decide that adoption is the right path for you.

Why Choose Adoption Through American Adoptions?

I. Experience the miracle of giving life as well as pursuing your own life dreams.

  • Through adoption, women facing the sometimes frightening reality of an unexpected pregnancy can experience the miracle of life, without being forced to be a parent before they are ready or despite being financially incapable. There are millions of amazing couples in the world who are ready to be parents, but for whatever reason, are not able to do so biologically. Other couples are perfectly able to conceive biologically, but would like to grow their families through adoption, instead.
  •
  • Abortion may seem like the fastest, easiest and most final solution to your situation, but the reality is far from being fast, easy or final. Given the chance or take a life, what do you feel in your heart? Why not give the gift of life to your baby, as well as to a couple who wants nothing more than to be blessed with your baby?

II. Choose an adoption plans that fits your needs and goals.

  • When a mother chooses to place her beloved baby for adoption, many times, it is for financial reasons - and if you could, you know you would give your baby the life of anyone's dreams. Through adoption, this is possible. American Adoptions gives you the power to choose what you would like to happen through every stage of adoption, from choosing your baby's family to the level of contact you would most feel comfortable with in the future, and everything in between:
    • You can select from one of the best families in America or let us select a family for you.
    • You can choose to meet the family.
    • You can talk with the family on the phone.
    • You can receive letters and pictures of the baby.
    • You can choose a more open adoption where a continued relationship is developed between you and the adoptive family.
    • You can receive face-to-face counseling.
    • You can receive help with medical bills.
    • You can receive help with housing or living arrangements.

III. Choose from the best families in America.

  • The best adoptive family is not necessarily the most beautiful, rich or famous family; however, they are people who aspire to be wonderful parents to any adoptive child. It means they yearn to be a great mom and dad. Most pregnant women feel that placing a baby with a carefully screened family is very important. Birth mothers rely on us to make sure every family is capable and ready to be wonderful parents. Below you can see what American Adoptions does to make sure your baby will have the greatest family in America:
    • Thorough inspection of the family's home.
    • Review of police records and child abuse registry to see if they have been accused, or involved, in a crime or child abuse.
    • Extensive reference checks and interviews.
    • Verification of employment and financial stability.
    • Adoptive families must submit to an interview and review with an adoption committee, comprised of adoptees, adoptive adults, and former birth parents.
    • Required education on parenting, childrearing, and adoption.
    • We teach families how to respond to adoption questions from their child, so they will have positive feelings about being adopted.
    • We explain and prepare our families for the adoption process.
    • We research and evaluate a family's personality traits.
    • We explore the adoptive family's expectations of the process to make sure they match with the desires of our birth mothers.
    • We explore the adoptive family's comfort level with various issues in order to ensure their needs match yours.

IV. Speak with staff members about personal adoption experiences.

  • It is completely natural: many pregnant women considering adoption want to know what adoptive children think of their birth parents. For example, you may want to know why mothers place their children for adoption, what adoptive families think of being parents or what it feels like to place a child for adoption.
  • Many of our staff members are either adopted, have adopted a child or have been involved in the placement of a child through a friend or relative. We will gladly share our personal experiences with you and answer many of your questions. Our staff's personal experience has helped us to better understand what each one of our clients' experiences. By understanding your feelings, we are able to provide you greater support and guidance.

V. A Stable, Nationwide Program in Your Area

  • Most birth mothers want to be certain that the agency who performs their adoption services will be around in the future. Most want to be certain that their child can talk to others that have been adopted. Most want stability in their adoption program so they can receive letters and pictures of their child and not have them discontinued because an attorney retired or an agency closed their doors. We provide services nationwide because we know people move in their lifetime. We can provide services anywhere in the United States. We also have staff members that can come to your door or meet you at the hospital in most areas in America. This face-to-face correspondence is important in adoption and one of the many things that sets American Adoptions apart.
    • 24-hour-a-day counseling available when you need it most - anytime.
    • Experience in placing thousands of babies with wonderful families.
    • Nationwide services.
    • If you choose to receive letters and pictures, the security knowing that American Adoptions works hard to ensure that your desires are always fulfilled.
    • Your records will be kept safe and secure, always.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is American Adoptions the right adoption agency choice for many birth mothers?

American Adoptions is one of the largest licensed adoption agencies in the United States. Each year, we work with thousands of women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy and offer assistance to these women. Our large, caring staff is able to assist you seven days a week and provide you with one-on-one counseling about your pregnancy and available options.

You should choose an adoption agency where you feel completely comfortable with their services and staff. With American Adoptions, you will work with an Adoption Specialist who is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Adoption Specialist will be your advocate and will provide support and guidance as you create an adoption plan that is right for you.

How will the family tell my child about me and the adoption when my child is older?

Each family has their own style of introducing adoption to the child. When you are matched with an adoptive family, you can ask them this question. If you would like your Adoption Specialist to discuss it for you, just let her know. He or she can share your wishes or provide good ideas from other adoptive families.

You will also be able to share what you want your baby to know about you. You can complete a keepsake booklet to share hobbies, stories, photos of you and your family and a letter to your baby. The adoptive family can provide this to your child as he or she grows older. Be as creative as you like! Some birth mothers have even knitted a special blanket as a gift to their baby or given a similar symbol of their love.

The father of your baby can fill out the birth father's keepsake booklet or write a letter too. You may have other family members who would also like to share photos or a letter to the baby. This is your opportunity to pass on your and your family's love and to share your personality, history and reasons for choosing adoption. The adoptive family will treasure whatever information you provide and will share it with the baby at an appropriate age. In most adoptive homes, the word adoption is in the child's vocabulary early on, and adoption is celebrated in their lives.
