Adoption Home Study Process

While you might, many families don't know that completing an adoption home study is a crucial first step. If your agency doesn't handle the process well, guide you through every step, collect all necessary documents and manage time effectively, it can cause unnecessary, costly delays.

Unfortunately, we've seen too many families go through, which is why we're here to help.

With 13,000 adoptions completed, we are familiar with the requirements of every state.

You benefit from:

  • A process approved in all 50 states
  • About 35% fewer forms and steps
  • Approvals that move faster because crucial details are right the first time

Result: A smoother, more confident path to adoption.

Collecting Everything You Need

Your home study is more than paperwork — it’s your green light to move forward.

We make it simple with:

  • Clear checklists and secure uploads
  • One-on-one support from licensed social workers
  • Smart organization tools in your online account

Families with smaller providers often face:

  • Form overload and slow responses
  • Missed details that cause delays returning home with your child.
  • Court delays

Preventing Delays

“Our first provider missed state details — we had to stay two extra weeks.
With American Adoptions, everything was pre-checked, and it made all the difference.”
A. Lewis, Adoptive Family

How we help you avoid those delays:

  • 50-state readiness review before submission
  • Fewer redundant forms through guided checklists
  • Proactive scheduling to keep your timeline moving

  1. Less Paperwork – Guided checklists, secure uploads, real-time tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
