3 Things You Need to Know About Adoption Costs

Most families plan and budget for one adoption, not several failed ones.

But at many agencies, one disrupted match can cost thousands, and a few can drain your entire savings.

It is not just money you lose. It is time, momentum, and sometimes the dream of becoming a parent at all.

We want to help you avoid the pitfalls of unclear adoption costs with other agencies.

1. Adoption Can Have Some Sticker Shock, But There’s Good Reason

A successful adoption typically costs between $35,000 and $85,000+.

That’s a wide range, and for many families, it can feel overwhelming at first.

The key is understanding what drives those costs and how to stay within them.

Why Adoption Costs What It Does

There are four main factors that make up the cost of adoption.

These include:

  • Agency services and coordination.
  • Legal work across states.
  • Medical and living expenses.
  • Counseling and support.

Each of these plays a role in getting an adoption to a successful outcome.

The good news is that families are able to set a budget within the typical range of a successful adoption. The difference is working with an agency that helps you stay within that range, even if something doesn’t go as planned.

2. Where You Don’t Want to Cut Corners

Agency fees make up a large portion of the total cost. Because of that, they are often the first place families try to save money.

But this is also where the biggest mistakes happen.

Agency services are what drive:

  • How many opportunities you see via strong marketing.
  • How situations are evaluated.
  • How the process is managed from start to finish.

When agencies cut corners in these areas, the risk doesn’t go away.

It shifts to you.

3. Where Families Lose Money Without Realizing It

What most families are shown is the cost of one successful adoption. But what about the unsuccessful costs? We call these "iceberg costs."

What families don't always see is what happens when things don’t go as planned. A match can fall through. A situation can change.

When that happens, families are responsible for costs in several key areas:

The True Cost of an Adoption Disruption at most other agencies

This is how families find themselves exceeding the top end of the cost range and depleting their budget before they ever successfully adopt.

We call these "iceberg costs."

With many agencies, those costs are not protected. So families pay repeated fees to continue.

This is where adoption becomes emotionally and financially draining for many families. It’s not just the cost of adoption. It’s the cost of multiple attempts.

When there is:

  • Limited marketing.
  • Weaker screening.
  • No financial protection.

Families are more likely to:

  • Go through more failed situations.
  • Lose money on each one.

It can turn into a years-long cycle that becomes hard to get out of.

How We Protect Families from These Risks

The goal isn’t just to understand adoption costs. It’s to avoid paying for the same outcome more than once.

Without the right structure, families often carry the full financial risk of each failed attempt.

At American Adoptions, we are structured to reduce both risk and repeat costs.

  • We invest in marketing to create consistent opportunities.
  • We evaluate situations carefully before matching.
  • And we offer financial protection to cover many of the costs associated with failed adoptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to retain our own attorney?

No, American Adoptions has established relationships with some of the best adoption attorneys in the nation. Because adoption laws vary from state to state and between counties, it is important to utilize the services of an adoption attorney who specializes in the state where the adoption will finalize, which is unknown until you match with an expectant mother. You have the right to retain your own attorney, but doing so may be an additional, unnecessary expense.

Can we choose the gender of our baby?

American Adoptions does not allow gender specificity in adoption. Any family who wishes to be gender-specific in their adoption should contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION and ask about the possibility of an exception waiver before taking any other steps toward adoption with our agency. Any families who do receive an exception to be gender-specific may also incur an additional fee, which helps cover the additional advertising costs of such a request.

Please note that gender specificity will likely increase your wait time significantly.
